@MajorDSmythe, in that case - knowing nothing - you should check it out. It's a thirteen-part miniseries based around a murder(s) mystery, and the less you know going into it, the better.

In that case, thanks for the suggestion. I'll be sure to give it a try.

You're quite welcome. If you make it through the entirety of it, do let me know your thoughts on it.

I watched Harper's Island when it aired in 2009 and enjoyed it. It's definitely worth watching for those who haven't seen it. You should be able to get through it in 3 or 4 days as well.

I had my girlfriend over this past weekend, and I'd say we watched it in a full day, it was so addictive. It was my second time watching, and it was interesting seeing her try to piece things together. Of course, she put everything together halfway through the show, somehow. Nice to see someone else who has watched it and enjoyed it, though.

£8 in HMV. I would not have come across it had I not been looking at the General Interest shelves.

@MajorDSmythe, very cool. I've been rewatching the 'Friday the 13th' series on Netflix. I believe they have the original up to 'Jason Goes To Hell,' and it stops there. I used to watch these all the time when I was a kid, so its incredibly nostalgic coming back and remembering little parts here and there.

With the F13 films unashamedly being my favourite horror series, i've been wanting to buy that since I heard about it. I'm not expecting for JGTH to get much of a look in on the main documentary, which is a shame as it's one of my favourites in the series.

I've always liked JGTH because it's so much different. Totally goes against the grain, and I've heard people don't like that and a few others because it doesn't follow the traditional formula. So many good parts throughout the movie, especially the opening.

What's also cool is that, in JGTH, Kane Hodder not only plays Jason, but we see him outside of the mask as a random security guard.

I agree 100%. Because it's so different to what went before (and what we've seen since), is exactly what I like about it.

It's funny, JGTH is generally considered one of the worst F13 films, yet the 7" figure of Jason from the film is quite rare. And when copies pop up on ebay, a bidding war ensues.

@MajorDSmythe, I've always enjoyed seeing a change in the formula, and the film handled it quite well. I'm looking forward to getting back to it again.

Hamilton -I nationens intresse (Hamilton - In the Interest of the Nation).

The first movie in a movie series with Sweden's superspy Carl Hamilton.

@Torgeirtrap, I'm a fan of Swedish films. What type of series is it? Action, drama, thriller, or a mixture?

    Dark knight rises!!!!!

This film was freakin' awesome! The best of the 3 and arguably the best trilogy ever!

Didn't see the SF trailer but you know what? I didn't care! TDKR kicked all sorts of rear ends.

It's the first movie of three (the second is to be released later this year), about Carl Hamilton in the Swedish Military Intelligence, based upon the book by the same name, written by Jan Guillou. The book was written in 1988, but the film is set to present day, with a story involving a private military company.

I agree with some critics: The movie tries to be more a Bourne-type of film, but lands somewhere around 24, without really make an impression. I think it would done better as an TV-movie.

If you don't expect a new Jason Bourne, In the Interest of the Nation is worth the watch. You get the cold Northern European feel that Scandinavian films have, and an ok spy story.

Mikael Persbrandt, who plays Hamilton is a great actor. He has this cold, controlled persona, and can remind you a bit of Mads Mikkelsen in Casino Royale, while still being the hero. I'm not surprised if he ends up playing a Bond villain someday. Other cast members include David Dencik, who played Toby Esterhase in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

@Torgeirtrap, does it feel like Bourne because of the story at all, or because of the action?
  • @Creasy47

Well, I find the first half of the film a bit like Bourne because of the cinematography, and the little use of dialouge. It changes (unfortunately) quite a bit after a while, but you see the inspiration.

If you like Scandinavian crime/thrillers, you might want to see Nobel's Last Will:

Not as good as the Millennium series, but in the same genre. Just like with Hamilton, this is the first of several films. I read somewhere that there are five more films with the Annika Bengtzon-character in production. Malin Crépin (Bengtzon) reminds me a bit of Izabella Scorupco (Natalya Simonova in Goldeneye), which is not a bad thing! :)

I just watched a trailer for 'Hamilton,' and it looks amazing. How many films in the series? The trailer, unfortunately enough, gave away a good bit of spoilers. No matter, it still looks entertaining to watch.

A second film comes later this year, and a third one is in production (from what I've read). Of course, there are several other Hamilton-films; here's a complete list:

Other than this one, I've only seen the Hamilton-series with Peter Stormare, also quite entertaining, but a bit dated.

That's pretty cool, I may have to give them a watch soon. I've always been a fan of Peter Stormare.
  • He's great! Maybe a bit more typical action hero in his portrayal, but very entertaining.

Forgot to mention: Mark Hamill is the vilain in Stormare's Hamilton. :)

Wow. That gives me 1,000% extra incentive to watch it. Now, if only I could somehow get my hands on a copy.

I don't know if In the Interest of the Nation has been released outside Scandinavia (yet), but the Stormare-film is probably available. You may have to search for "Commander Hamilton".

As I best remember, I absolutely adore the 'mockumentary' portion of the film and thought a tad less of the 'real movie' - however, still a very good film. Gotta give it a re-watch, though! And hey, for $5, can you go wrong???

@KamalKhan The Cassandra Crossing in an epic story, a little sad also. Worth watching even if only for Sophia Loren. Suspenseful and quite dramatic, haven't seen it in years though

    Spoiler:
The end, when the disaster happens, and the bridge is out and the train goes down, can be quite a harrowing watch actually

It's not a movie but a series. I bought the complete Remington Steele collection.
