Worth the cover price or wait for the collected edition?

I'd say wait for the collected edition, @JET007. For a mere issue, I wouldn't advise purchasing it if you're expecting something big from it. There's hardly anything.

It does sound like a Young Bond story, however.

I was flipping through some of the Dynamite collected editions in my local comic shop the other day, ended up picking up Casino Royale. Haven't given it a proper read yet, but I noticed the model for Bond seems very inconsistent. Just on one page, his face seems to change in every panel.

I was impressed with the model for Bond in Kill Chain and in VARGR (I think it was), which I also flipped through. Which of the modern Bond stories is best? None of them looked very colourful or weird, which is what I was looking for, but I understand why they might lean toward bloody, dark, gritty, etc. for modern Bond stories.

The model seen in Kill Chain made his first appearance in Hammerhead. VARGR's is different.

Top three pick-ups you should look forward to:
    1-Hammerhead
    2-Kill Chain
    3-Solstice

I liked both models (Masters and Casalanguida) from what I saw. Thanks for the recommendation @ClarkDevlin. What makes Hammerhead the best one in your opinion?

It's unapologetically Bondian, @Milovy. And the storyline is crafted well.

  • I wasn't sure that Bond really NEEDED an origin story...but having read #1 I've changed my mind. Comic books THRIVE on origin stories -- consider how much emotional weight Batman's origin gives to his actions as a hero! If anything, we know too much about Daniel Craig's Bond origin story (thank you and please go away, Mr. Oberhauser) -- but this origin really works. It's consistent with Fleming, which is more than a lot of the movies can say! I found it more satisfying as the first issue of a multi-part story than has been the case for most of Dynamite's series so far. I look forward to more...

    I agree.
Read it, liked it. Nice Setup for the things to come. The art is charming enough.

The art really lends itself to being animated. If this series takes off it could be a wonderful basis for a series of animated movies.

If the storylines are good enough, I support the idea.

Don't expect LALD anytime soon, sadly Calero hasn't even started yet.

That's a shame. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't come to pass. I've lost all hope for volume 2 of Felix Leiter too.

I don't want to think that, but I am as well. I can do without Felix Leiter volume 2, but LALD and MR I'm looking forward to. Their work on CR was fantastic.

Could Jensen be using a different artistic team? He has said he has a script. Could the racial overtones of the book be holding Dynamite back? Or even more legal rights issues like Casino Royale? We'll see what Van Jensen has to say. He is also working on James Bond Origins, he said himself. I would have thought that with Roger Moore's LALD book being rereleased that it would be positive signs for Dynamite. As well as the novel's 65 anniversary next year.

Van Jensen still hasn't responded to the tweet, and probably won't so anything is possible atm. I don't like speculating, we'll just have to wait and see.
I am just glad we are getting two new series this year. Wouldn't mind another one-shot too, whatever happened to those?

I guess they might be waiting to see how well the graphic novel collection of one-shots sell before commissioning more?

Possible. Since the collection is called "Vol. 1" i always assumed there would be more. Maybe we'll get another holiday special, like Solstice.

Solstice was absolutely amazing! My favourite Dynamite story so far (and to their credit, they have been brilliant overall)

There's also a #1 on the spine of Casino Royale. Van Jensen said he has a script ready. There's something their not telling us, based on Carleo's tweet. Why would they get rid of him? His artwork was the best thing about Casino Royale.

For James Bond Origins, do you think we could see some classic characters return? The three that I can think of (for Origins, realistically) are May Maxwell, Rene Mathis, and Kincade. They're the only ones that I can see fitting in realistically, without trouble.

I highly doubt Kincade would ever be used since he's an Eon Productions character.

Also, he's not part of the Fleming canon.

Who says that they are using Fleming's work only? Dynamite is using Oddjob and possibly Goldfinger, and they're EON's as much as Fleming.

Dynamite has a deal only with Ian Fleming Publications. They haven't extended the deal with Danjaq.

Oddjob and Goldfinger are Fleming's. Not Eon's. Eon only has the screen rights to them.

I see your point thank you for clearing that up. However, stranger things have happened.

    No problem. :)

While I do hope to see Kincade included, as well as other Eon characters, someone in the business told me that he believes Eon and IFP don’t have too much of a healthy relationship, these days. At least professionally.

If only the Bond 25 critics on that thread here would start reading Dynamite Comic's run, there won't be as much trouble on this site.
