Lynch does like to leave things ambigious, I am looking forward to rewatching season 3 I am waiting until the Bluray Boxset drops in price then I'll analyse it to death.
If I had to guess the ending as written, I might go with the ending of Ep. 17. And if that's the case, it would debunk certain theories about the ending of Ep. 18. But as @Fire_and_Ice_Returns mentions, Lynch likes to leave things ambiguous, so I can entirely see why he may have rearranged scenes, if that is indeed what happened.
Episode 17's Scooby Doo ending is interesting as Lynch is giving the type of ending many fans would like, Episode 17 is the ending that fits with the nostalgia of seasons one and two. Episode 18 has an ending similar to Mullholland Drive, Episode 18 is a cold and harsh reality that to me was very impactful, at the end the two protagonists to me were in a completely helpless and terrifying situation.
Then on the way home happened to walk past the stage door and chatted to Kimmy Robertson and Sheryl Lee! Got a photo with Hawk as well! Lovely people, very friendly and open.
Any interesting tidbits to share?
The focus of the evening was mainly centred on Season 3 which was smart as most of the original seasons and Fire walk with me have commentaries and documentaries made ages ago so I'm pretty familiar with those stories.
For season 3 The actors were only given their individual scenes - they generally didn't know how it fit into the wider story. The exception was Kyle Machlan who had everything until the final episode - that was kept from him until very close to shooting. There was no ad-lobbing allowed - and apparently Lynch even reined in Jim Belushi from improvising.
Al Strobel and Dana Ashbrook waxed lyrical about the legendary Episode 8 of Season 3 - saying it was their favourite episode.
The actors saw the premiere of the first two episodes at a special screening but then had to watch the show week to week like the rest of us!
As executive producer Sabrina Sutherland has the most insight because Lynch and Frost told her the whole story before they even completed the script. Then she and Lynch went over the finished scripts multiple times to break them down so she could organise shooting schedules and crew. She also played the small role of the floor attendant in the initial casino scenes with Dougie jones.
They had a budget and a delivery date. Showtime thought they'd only be delivering nine episodes!
She said it was difficult for Kyle as he would sometimes have to swap between his three characters on the same day. Even though they would schedule as best they could to not do this sometimes it was unavoidable.
Laura Dern and Naomi Watts' roles were written with them specifically in mind.
The questions of whether something 'made sense' was something the actors had long ago given up asking. (Like, decades ago!)
Very interesting to hear that the cast don't question whether or not things make sense. I think I recall Kyle once saying in relation to the season 3 finale that he has his opinions on what it means but it doesn't line up with what Lynch may think of it. I guess that's true art.
Sheryl spoke about that final scene and the air was crackling because of being at that location in the dead of night with Kyle delivering his lines in a specific way. I don't think she realised it was going to be the final scene when she shot it because like the rest of the cast she was only given pages not episode numbers or whole scripts.
As a painter, sculptor, musician, photographer and writer Lynch takes all of those artistic expressions and brings them together in film. He understands all of those art forms and their impacts. He is one my favourite filmmakers and Twin Peaks: the return was beautiful.
For the better when it came to creativity, but perhaps for the worse when it came to brutality.
Same here. I bought the box with the first two seasons a while ago.
I have boxset with season 1 and 2 and Fire Walk With Me, I have the set for The Return also though hate the card box design it's way too flimsy.
I would be surprised if the show returned now, so many of the cast have passed on. Also after analysing The Return to the extreme its a fitting end, The Return really is a work of genius from Lynch.
I have the movie on vhs, bought it as soon as it came out. Saw it in the cinema upon release. Season 3 is available on Netflix still. Loved it, but not sure what to make of the end.
Greetings from China. Thanks for posting.
Damn, I wish it’d come back for another season but as has been said, a number of the cast members have passed unfortunately. Still, as long as we have Kyle MacLachlan, I’d love another. Season 3 was quite the cliffhanger. Enjoyed season 3 but it wasn’t quite up there with season one. The only creative decision that Lynch made which I wasn’t entirely happy with, was the cartoon style he used when Cooper travelled through the power sockets.
Happy 30th Anniversary Twin Peaks!
I think The Return on one level was a meta commentary on the phenomenon of Twin Peaks, the end could be interpreted as a message to the viewer that the Twin Peaks you knew and loved does not exist anymore. The return of Cooper and the Scoobie Doo type wrap up was the coffee and slice of cherry pie for the fans, the ending is the harsh reality of what really exists in a number of ways.
The power sockets are significant, at first Cooper trys to go into power socket number 15 which would have taken Cooper directly into Episode 15. Episode 15 is the episode in which Doogie/Cooper sticks the fork in the socket which starts the process of bringing Cooper back.
Cooper is warned not to go into 15 and goes into socket 3 instead which is episode 3 the current episode. It appears that if Cooper had jumped all the way into episode 15 without the journey he would have been destroyed.
In the UK The Return is permanently on Sky Atlantic, not sure if you get that in your country?
It is on HBO here. Just doublechecked.
Oh, I hadn’t realized that. Thanks. I just didn’t like the cartoonish graphics he used.
That was new to me as well. Very cool.
