I'm curious to hear how people feel about "social media appeal" not in terms of if they were cast but I mean in terms of what they already have prior to possibly being James Bond? Do you think this could give an actor more or less of a chance? And I'm not talking about your Jacob Eloridi's or Timothee Chalamet's, I'm talking about actors that fit the part but have a younger online following.

I might be naive and not much of a social media user, but I really don't think it'll make any difference. In fact it may well benefit an actor if they don't continue to use social media after attaining a level of success, and let's be honest, a good few of the very successful ones who do use social media likely have paid assistants who help manage their accounts. Bond's such a notable franchise and well oiled publicity machine anyway that an actor's social media wouldn't make much difference in this area.

And I dunno, it's kinda of a good look for a future Bond actor to claim they don't have any interest in social media... seems oddly Bondian.

I feel you @007HallY, I am thinking more in terms of "fandom" as opposed to their own personal use of social media but I think your initial point still stands about it not making a difference. I personally don't think EON will be swayed one way or the other by whether the actor is already liked on social media, but I wanted to put the question out there to see if anyone has any strong feelings about it because this is the first time we're casting this role in this new cultural landscape.

Slightly changing the subject, it's kind of why I'm not relying too heavily on the casting process in the past because of how different things are and how it's more likely these days that we'll get a name ahead of time. For example, when the ATJ rumours were spreading, I had my doubts and still do, but I wasn't too quick to dismiss it just because, as I said, I'm expecting a possible leak. That's just how things are these days.

Yeah, I can see that. I remember reading that Dr. Who had problems with Gatwa’s casting nearly being leaked, which in turn caused them to announce it unceremoniously on social media (not 100% sure how accurate that is though).

That said, I was surprised reading dug up articles from 2005 on here which involved a mixture of rumour and what we now know to be truth. I think one was an old MI6 article about a rumour that Brosnan was potentially going to return, alongside mentions of what turned out to be genuine candidates (including Craig). I mean, as under wraps as this stuff is it’s not a matter of national security, and there’ll always potentially be leaks I suppose.

It's a good question mate, personally I think Bond is someone people should look up to, and I don't think anyone spoken about a lot on social media will be cast.

Off topic, but I kind of hope that the next Bond doesn't have social media, I love that about Daniel's era, he was too cool for that.

I don't think it's a good strategy to explicitly chase a young audience, especially considering how rapidly both North America and Europe are ageing.

According to a report I heard recently on BBC Radio 4 News the average age in the United States is 39, which is the age I am currently. Apparently that's still young though.

That and younger audience's taste change quickly. And mature. They are the most unreliable market.

My gut still says its ATJ and yes its largely and only due to the fact have we ever seen an actor who could be 007 at james bond events? I mean if Hugh Jackman was at the die another day premiere ok maybe he is a bind fan but if he went to nearly every bond anniversary event in 2002 i think everyone here would rightfully assume Hugh would be the next 007 regardless of what happened. And i am still kind of underwhelmed by it and feel he would need an incredible director to get some kind of great stoic performance from him….

I said this in 2009 and i will say this today the Bond film wheel is never not turning my guess is they get a dozen or so spec scripts from hungry writers who want to be the next purvis and wade there are also likely a dozen or so meeting per year with potential directors who are as hungry… some big names like Nolan and some small names (insert director who only did four - five episodes of a british drama) overall they are trying to see three things

    1. What is the tone of popular action films for the next decade? And how can they apply to Bond?
    2. What are the major trends in cinema? And how can they be applied to Bond?
    3. How do we go “back to fleming” in 2025 and keep it fresh?

Again i have put my thiugh out there in doing a casino royale to Diamonds Are Forever (adapt the book and bring as much of the unused elements to the fore front)

This works as the Batman was very mob orientated plus Jack Spang feels like a horror villain in the novel so that slasher element could help as well

    1. The Beekeeper is the only "new" successful action movie. So.. we don't know.
    2. major trends? videogames I guess.
    3. Bringing back old villains like Godlfinger, Scaramanga, etc. Maybe Bond girls too.

I don't think they'll do a direct adaptation of DAF or any Bond novel, but I do think that the Craig and Brosnan eras preferred using specific Fleming book in order to craft original stories (ie. SF and NTTD used a lot of YOLT, and DAD, TWINE and GE used a lot of MR). It may well be the same this time round - they'll use a novel to take broad elements from, but ultimately create an original story.

DAF is actually a pretty good novel to use as a foundation in this case. It shows a Bond who is well established as 007, but seemingly underestimates the dangers of his mission (he dismisses the gangsters as small time crooks despite a) being told to the contrary by pretty much every single one of his allies and b) is put through hell by the time he reaches Spectreville). He's much more prone to recklessness in this one (despite being undercover and in a legitimately dangerous situation, he chooses to interfere with the mob on two occasions which looses them money. It results in getting others seriously hurt or killed). You have a genuinely good central romance between him and Case, and is one of the times we see Bond legitimately falling in love. There's a great tension with Bond going undercover throughout the whole book, and some great little moments/lines of dialogue here and there. I also love all the stuff about the gangsters paying people by fixing horse races/card games in order not to attract attention.

The main villains themselves are pretty lame (Wint and Kitt are good though) and for a film something a bit more than diamond smuggling should be involved in the main plot. Like I said, a direct adaptation would be a bit pointless, but I'd love to see them use these elements to come up with something new.

Fleming's Bond has a whole essence that can be captured without delving back into adapting specific elements.

I think it speaks to his more period look that I think would add another interesting element to his casting.

I think he's ageing quickly. Certainly doesn't look the athletic type anymore and looks closer to Cavill's build. The ill-fitted suit does make him look like a young Charles though. I'd like him as a secondary agent/co-star.

Tbh I don't really get what you mean. His build is nothing like Cavill's and I'm confused what you mean by his aging?

I think Callum Turner will likely be approached, probably get a screentest I think. I'd prefer his casting over Cavill, Mescal or ATJ

Closer to Cavill's build, he's bigger now since the days of The Capture. Doesn't look like a swimmer body type. It's just what I see in the future is all, don't want pick on the lad.

ATJ was at a Bond event because his wife is good friends with Broccoli and also shot an International Women's Day with Craig back in 2011 or 2012.... she’s no stranger to EoN, @Risico007 … and by your logic it could even be that it’s actually Sam Taylor-Wood that Broccoli invited because she wants her to be the next Bond director.

It’s not the case, but using your logic…

Must say, I’m on one of those days when I don’t like any of the proposed candidates. Not one. Most of them have no star power, IMHO. They are all very bland, which is something very of their time and respective generations. Bland. Uninteresting. They fail miserably in interviews, and have notorious preference for unshaved looks and men buns. The gym is their safe zone. And have no real gravitas, either on screen or off.

Like I said, one of those days.

    Edit.

Ok, I'm now watching The Gentlemen on Netflix, and I must say, Theo James is still my favourite. Anyone else watching this Guy Ritchie series? I'm enjoying it so far. Better than the film, I think.

Well, to be frank, I've always been a film magazines collector, you know, Premiere, Empire, ..., and I've always appreciated interviews, but these youngsters, from the late 90s or post 2000, don't seem to have a lot of interesting things to say, except when they have clearly been prepped for it. With the exception of maybe Callum Turner and Theo James, who can be quite knowledgeable and interesting while in interviews, the latter having a B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Nottingham. The others I've watched are a bit, well, dumb, to be fair. But, again, to be fair, one was born in 1990 and the other in 1984.Personally, I find people born after the millennium to be a bit bland and boring. I'm aware of the open nature of that remark, and I do hate to make generalisations like that. I suppose it's been one of those days, like I've stated. Plenty of interesting people in their 20s out there I suppose. I just don't know many :)

Hope I helped. Again, I'm aware of the dismal nature of my depressive remark today. My fault. There's always tomorrow. And I'd love to be surprised by a youngish actor's personality and star quality, presence and overall persona. I'd really would. Hope is something I value quite a lot. And that would fill me with it to the brim.

Here are two rather nice interviews with the two I've mentioned, to make up for my statement earlier. Take note that these two interviews were taken one after the other. And do notice the very noticeable Seamster in Turner's wrist ;) And another Omega in James'.

I have to say, while C.Turner is not my candidate, I strongly believe that Leo Suter is the one who EoN should be honing in on, I have come to appreciate his potential. When @Denbigh first suggested him I was one of his biggest detractors; I just couldn’t see any hint of Bond. Over time, having seen several performances, and listened to several interviews, I have come to see his potential. He comes off much better in motion, either in a film or an interview, than he does in still photos. Turner has a strong presence , voice and comes off as charming. If he is eventually cast , I will have no problem giving him a chance.

That said, Suter is the one to watch ;)

I'm with you all the way as far as Suter is concerned, but credit where it's due. It was @HarmonyRockets who first mentioned Suter as far back as 2020. From what I can tell @Denbigh doesn't even like Suter!
