I think Mendes' actual quote was that the next movie will not be WHAT we expect, rather than "who."

Not even the next movie, but what follows after the Craig era. Whenever that is. See how easily things get twisted.

I want @Thunderfinger and @Birdleson to co-direct Brosnan's come back outing as Bond.

just look at this picture of Tom Hardy and tell me he doesn't look like he next 007

Ok I seriously can't decide between those three actors as long as it's one of those three I am happy.

Well, since you asked about just "looking"... I'd say no, yes, no.

Hardy is an exceptional actor, but would be so much better as a villain. As is normally the case, Nolan got it right when he cast him as Bane in TDKR.

Agreed. Hardy is wonderful, but rather villain than Bond, and yes, Nolan casts well.

If only Jake Gyllenhaal was British and looked more Bondian. He's 35 years old and and is probably the best actor in the business right now. Honestly, his performances in Nightcrawler, Southpaw and Zodiac are absolutely mindblowing. And even more stunning is these 3 characters he plays are polar opposites in each film, the guy is a chameleon.

Okay... though I can't say I agree, I've never thought "mindblowing" about him, though I've always liked him, and have seen all those movies (Southpaw did nothing for me, the other two are very good) and many others he has done. He's good, but...

Now, that American actors are mentioned, I really did like Chris Pine as Jack Ryan in Shadow Recruit. And I liked him better as a super-spy than Tom Hardy in This Means War.

It surprises me anyone liked anybody or anything in This Means War. I don't know if I've seen Pine in anything else, so I can't comment on him beyond that movie. And I wouldn't make any judgments on any actor's acting based on roles in McG's movies, I just feel sorry for them that they ever accepted the job in the first place.

let me explain my three choices in a bit more detail.

    Tom Hardy
    Film to watch: inception
Actor to date his 007 would most likely match: Early Connery
My thoughts: he is suave debonair and has a dark sense of humor his character in Inception was pretty much 007 and while he is known for playing villains isn't Bond essentially a bad guy working for us. As George Lazenby once said (and I am cleaning it up for the forum) "Bond is a jerk. He is a nice jerk and you want him on your side in a fight but you shouldn't trust him with your car or girl." When I see Hardy in Inception and This Means war I get the impression he would be like early Connery especially From Russia with love Connery brutual harsh but loving every minute of his journey.

    Michael Fassbender:
What to watch: inglorious bastards haywire or X-men first class
Actor he would closely resemble in my opinion: Dalton/early Craig
My thoughts: Where Hardy would be a balance of light and dark Fassbender would be well just dark. Sure he oozes Charisma (the bar scene in inglorious bastards watch it trust me) but he has a darkness previously seen with Dalton and early Craig (who if his tenure is truely over I would say he had two tenures the dark Fleming era of Casino Royale and Quantum of solace and the Mendes era) the ridiculous jokes of Spectre would be gone and what would be left is another harsh brutal bond film like Casino Royale and quantum of solace. Heck considering the only person in Eon who actively hates the title Risico is having less and less say perhaps his son will finally push that relatively cool unused Fleming title through.

    Tom Hiddleston
What to watch: The night manager
Actor he would most be like: Moore/Brosnan
My thoughts: before people say wait don't you prefer the dark bond films. Indeed I do but I feel Hiddleston while lighter then the other two actors I mentioned would be a nice carry on from Spectre. He has s great sense of humor and while he would be funny he can also be brutual and quite dark as the night manager proved and heck even Brosnan and Moore had dark serious spy thrillers in their respective tenures (Goldeneye and For Your Eyes only respectively)

    So that is my thiughts

An interesting analysis. A lot of that I can agree with.

I wouldn't think Hardy is "known for playing villains" - I have no idea if that is the case, but it certainly isn't how I'd view him at all. I'll need to re-watch Inception. Again. Very fond of him both as actor and person, but I wouldn't want him as Bond.

Of the 3 Fassbender roles you recommended I've only seen Inglourious Basterds, but I've seen him in many other movies and can easily imagine him as Bond. I haven't yet been able to decide what I think of him as a person, but that's secondary in this context anyway.

I intend to watch The Night Manager. I'm barely familiar with the actor (as actor - or person, for that matter).
the only person in Eon who actively hates the title Risico

    He does? Why?

I don't know I just know Michael G Wilson had always hated that title which is silly as its a bloody good title from Fleming and it has more fan trailers then any of the other four unused titles on YouTube. Make that for what you will.

Like I said my views are just that mine I do hope Craig returns and I do hope i like the next score but if I had to cast it would only be one of those three.

Risico? A good title? Hmm, I dunno. I guess if you say it enough times it sounds okay. If it's the name of the main villain I'm sure people will embrace the title.

It could be just one line in the next film ... that would fit. As a Bond title, I don't care for it.

Fleming was tops at coming up with Bond titles. With the possible exception of Colonel Sun all the continuation novel titles just seem lacking to me.

Trivia. Brosnan is the only Bond to date not star in a film with a Fleming title.

Lazenby is the only Bond to star in only a Fleming title. I guess if you consider CR67 then Niven too. And oh yeah the first CR with Nelson.

Connery and Moore started in the most with only their last appearance not in a Fleming titled film.

    Huh ?

    Ok a few things

    1. Moore most definitely only has Fleming titles A View to a kill is from the compendium of for your eyes only just because they dropped the from doesn't magically turn it into an original title (if bond 25 was Property of a lady instead of the property of a lady would it be an original title no of course not)

    2. If we count official series yes Connery also only had Fleming titles.... Sigh then he had to do an unofficial one

    3. Brosnan had two Fleming titles Goldeneye and The World is not Enough both came from Fleming

    4. Dalton also only had Fleming titles

On the topic of titles due to my insomnia I noticed a strange pattern in the bond films really since dalton's tenure if we include the rumored title of his third movie the property of a lady.

Each actor (Dalton Brosnan and Craig) had a specific pattern for titles with the latter two first film being in line with the previous actors pattern.

That sounds confusing but let me explain

Dalton's pattern had 1991's the property of a lady happened

His pattern was odd films based on short story titles where even titles were based on fleming's work

1987 the living daylights (short story)
1989 licence to kill (phrase from casino Royale the novel)
1991 The property of a lady (short story)

Brosnan's pattern is also fairly obvious. Odd films stepped in Fleming even films original titles

    1995 goldeneye (Fleming's home)
    1997 tomorrow never dies
1999 the world is not enough (Fleming title from on her Majesties secret service)
2002 die another day ( original title though I preferred the much rumored beyond the ice but meh)

Craig's pattern is location of climax for the odd films and of course organization frame for the even films

    2006 Casino Royale
    2008 Quantum of solace
    2012 Skyfall
    2015 Spectre

So since the pattern doesn't break even when a new actor comes in I would be shocked if bond 25,s title isn't based on the location of the climax.

Even in a suit, Hardy still looks wrong for Bond. Fassbender, I could have seen makign a good Bond, but he's too well known. As for Hiddleston, i've seen him in a few episodes of The Night Manages, amonst other roles, but he lacks a certain something Bond needs.

I couldn't sleep but I was referring to actual titles of novels or short stories. AVTAK not counting since they dropped the "From".

    It was just insomniac ramblings.

I feel the "from" doesn't count however thoughts on my title pattern observation...

Perhaps if I have the time and energy I will create posters for Dalton Brosnan and Craig based on this theory

(For Dalton it would be The Property of a lady and Death Leaves an Echo

Brosnan All the time in the world

    Craig The garden of death)

The Night Manager is the best BBC drama I have ever seen (in terms of production values and cast). Hiddleston may just have the charm of Moore combined with the harder edge of Craig?
