Benedict Cumberbatch has a terrific voice. Spectacular voice, I might add. But, his acting style and appearance is too Sherlock, I'm afraid. He babbles. A lot.
I have to agree. Cumberbatch's best asset is his voice, actually. He has presence too, but probably not the right style of presence. If he hasn't already, he should do a few Bond audiobooks!
    Agreed.

Except in Star Trek. He sounded really fake in that movie.

I was going to suggest Jack O'Connell after seeing The Man with the Iron Heart, but then you guys brought up the voice :-)).

At least it was Waltz's natural voice and not some cheesy, one octave lower, slooowwww pronunciation on the vowel delivery Cumberbatch gave us. And Blofeld was not an Indian man whitewashed into a Brit.

So yes I'm not a fan of Cumberbatch's Khaaaan.

Every Bond candidate when hearing Craig retires from the role:

It must be about ten years ago now that I noticed young Scottish actor Paul Telfer in an episode of NCIS and mentioned him as a potential future Bond on this site's old forum. What I didn't know at the time was that Telfer had actually been seen for Casino Royale according to this interview -

    https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=634411399931575&id=218893958149990

" (PAUL) Funny story. *Pause* I had a meeting for Bond.

    (KELLI) Really? Details, please!

(PAUL) Well --- I went in when they were recasting (after) Brosnan. I feel it was after I'd shot ‘Hercules’ but before it had aired --- so I was pretty viable at the time. (‘Herc’ was supposed to be a big deal but a number of issues cap-sized it.)

(BRITT) Which is too bad --- ‘Hercules’ is fun.

(PAUL) Anyway --- I was in my mid-20s and thought I was way too young for the role. I just went to meet these big casting directors, really --- just hoping to make an impression for some other project in the future. So I get in and switch into charming general meeting mode and proceed to go on and on about how they should cast Jason Isaacs or Damian Lewis --- two actors I love --- in the role. I didn't even try to sell myself; why bother?

    (BRITT) Oh my god, Paul!

(PAUL) Turns out they WERE looking for YOUNG BOND! (Henry Cavill ended up being the director’s choice.)

    (BRITT) *Face palm*

(KELLI) Oh my Lord. I kind of want to smack you, but then you'll probably stop talking to me.*shamefaced grin*

(PAUL) So I had sandbagged myself for no reason. Whatever --- Young Bond is a terrible concept anyway (which is why they ditched it...)."

These days the 38 year old Telfer is still rocking a good Bond look in my opinion. The trouble is his career has never progressed beyond beefcake roles. These days he is best known for his stints on daytime soap Days Of Our Lives. Considering where Craig has taken the acting in Bond movies it's a leap to think that someone like Telfer would get a shot. Still, here's some of his best Bond images. He reminds me of someone in the third pic. Can't think who.

yes, he does look a bit like Conner's in the last pic. Fun story that, but I'm glad they ditched the YB idea and I'm also glad he didn't get the role. Indeed it's the acting that holds him back.

I don't know anything about this chap but it was interesting to read that he went in for a discussion with the casting team. It looks like they casted a wide net during the process.

He appears a bit generic for my tastes (I've always maintained that Bond should look 'interesting' facially, and of course realize that is in the eye of the beholder)

Do you propose him as Bond?

As good as many other suggestions here.

Can Jon Cryer do a decent English accent, though?

Does anybody watch that show Knightfall? It stars a 32 year old Welsh guy named Tom Cullen. Not sure if he'd be right or not, but at least he's not boyish like most of these other candidates.

    Was also on Downton Abbey.

I like his face albeit he might look a tad too soft. He looks a bit like Brosnan in the last one.

Not too keen on Cullen I'm afraid. These photos are a bit deceptive. In reality he's nothing like Brosnan. More like Lewis Collins imho. A bit too he man for my tastes. Given where we've recently been, I'd prefer a little more suave next time out.

That's interesting because on Downton Abbey he acted more like the lead from the Inbetweeners.

He looks suave on that last picture. Too soft for my taste even. On the other too he looks like a Greek.

How's his acting in any case?

Haha. Point taken. I was more commenting on his looks. He honestly didn't make much of an impression on me in Downton Abbey. Dan Stevens and Rob James-Collier were more impactful.

I didn't think there were all that many good choices to replace Brosnan, but Chris Bale, Hugh Jackman and Clive Owen would have been top of my list at the time. Particularly Bale. It was bittersweet when he was cast as the Bat because I knew he wouldn't get Bond.

There is something to be said for maturity though certainly. I'm currently watching Berlin Station, and Richard Armitage definitely has the height and looks for the role along with the maturity. He's another one that could have done it if cast earlier but at 46 he's too old for it now (he looks very good for his age though).

Personally, I think actors should do three to four max and then get lost. Keeps it fresh and they normally peak on their third anyway.

Bale would have made a great Bond. He was young , he looked the part and he can certainly act.
He would have found the relaxed intensity - both the menace and the charm.

Regarding Moore, I think a key factor here is that superficially at least, he perfectly fit the part.
He perfectly looked the part, he was quite English
He had been on the Bond radar for a long time mainly because of his look. There was potential here for a casting home run.
The only question seemed to be whether he could bring the same Connery menace.
Turns out he couldn't. But he got by fine on his other merits and the series ploughed on as popular as ever.
As for a new Bond, I do think the task is to find a young, early '30s type with right look and Connery attrbutes.
    Back to basics!

    ====Tom Cullen above, merits consideration.
    I'd give him an audition.
