I think it would behoove Barbara to look at all the excellent Asian and Afro-British talents that are coming out of the British system rn. If she wants to appeal to a 21st century audience she needs to cast more diverse bodies and sexualities. .

    So a new, original character.

    Interesting...

I assumed it was a joke or a funny turn ;)
Truth in jest, it can only be describing an original character, absolutely not James Bond.

Agreed. Fine for the wider cast, not Bond.

Bond has a history of diversity in casting, but there shouldn’t be a quota. I’ve never heard of Spike Lee being criticized for lack of diversity in his films; and he shouldn’t be. He makes the films he wants to make with the characters and actors whom he chooses. It’s his prerogative.

Good point. The same could be said for the late Great John Singleton too.

It's not the same thing: the idea of promoting diversity is to boost representation of minorities. White people are not a minority in the US or UK. Saying Spike Lee isn't into diversity is a bit 'all lives matter' for my taste: it's not reversible.

Maybe Barbara and Michael, in order to make Bond more relatable to younger audiences. should consider changing Bond's occupation? I personally have never worked for MI6, and have never known anyone who works for MI6. Therefore I can't relate.
I have, however, known many people who have worked in the fast food industry. Perhaps Bond can become a 16 year old pizza delivery driver for Domino's, who is also an aspiring YouTuber.
He can remain blond as Craig has paved the way for further blond Bonds.
I'm thinking, we need a 16 year old actor who's a dead ringer for this guy....................

I don’t think anyone championing the concept of a younger actor or an actor of colour are that beyond reason...

...also I’m sure EON are very aware of general audience perception, and it’s important they take it into account, and whether we like or not, some of us are betting that they’re gonna make some specific moves this time round to change things up again.

And in my eyes, if they do change to a “younger” actor or an actor of colour, then they’ll do everything else they can to make sure that people know this is James Bond, and will always be no matter what changes they make here and there to change things up as time progesses - as they have been doing since the franchise began.

That’s cool. You don’t, but some do.

In Fleming’s Casino Royale Bond is 36. I wouldn’t personally want an actor younger than this unless he looked this age or older. I’m aware that Connery and Lazenby were younger than this when cast....but they looked at least mid to late thirties.

Personally, I have no interest in seeing a 20 something Bond in a film. But that’s just personal preference. A view I believe Cubby Broccoli also had, if the documentary’s I’ve seen are accurate.

I mean there’s changing the colour of his skin, and then there’s comparing it to changing his entire career... it’s not the same.

Also @suavejmf the younger Bond thing should be clarified. Most of us are happy for them to go for someone in their 30s. Very few of us want anyone in their 20s - if anyone.

I wouldn’t want to change his race either, because to me that is changing the character. But that is what it is, neither of us are going to be changing each other’s mind here.

That Chamelet actor who keeps getting posted on here looks about 19. I was responding to that really....but we’re on the same page there anyhow.

Recently in a BOND EXPERIENCE/ JAMES BOND RADIO crossover podcast there was speculation of a sale post NTTD.

I personally think if Bond gets into the hands of different producers or studios, all casting rules are out the window.

All pre conceived notions of what James Bond 007 is or should be .....may be crossed off. In other words I think an A lister actor, or simply anyone currently popular will be cast as Bond regardless of Nationality, ethnicity or age.

Therefore Bond actually could be played by Idris Elba, Michael B Jordan, Chris Pine, Tom Hanks, Leonardo di Caprio, Matthew McConaughey, Brad Pitt or George Clooney.

I also think that actor would probably be embraced as Bond the way Ben Affleck was embraced as Batman.

Are you saying Eon may sell? If that’s the case all bets are off as you say.

If a studio like Disney got Bond, the franchise is over for me.

I really do think if Disney or someone else got Bond, it would end up far more generic than what Eon produced with less care given to casting.

I think back to when Nicholas Cage was cast as Superman (even though he never got to play the part), Ben Affleck as Batman and Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock Holmes. Those guys were current popular actors at the times of their casting. Their suitability for their respective roles was debated, and yet also embraced.

Would we embrace, say, Matthew McConaughey as Bond if hypothetically Disney decided to cast him?

Won't matter that he's in his 50's. Bond gets older.............they stay the same age.

    Yes they do.

Downey JR as Sherlock Holmes was laughable.

I don’t think that’s gonna happen. It’ll remain a family led franchise, and should, as they’ll treat it with the most respect.

Yeah, I think Warner Bros. Would respect Bond's tradition more, they would still retain Bond's Darkness....and they won't release a Bond film every year, even if they might return to making a Bond film every Two years. And Oh, a chance for Christopher Nolan to direct more than one Bond film.

Also, realistically, why would EON get rid of their biggest property? They’re not exactly flooding in other successful projects.

And I have to disagree with you there @GadgetMan, none of these aspects guarantee success. A more frequent film could mean less care put into it.

Yeah, not that I even want EON to sell....but if am asked to choose between Warner Bros. & Disney, there's only one choice for me.

His Holmes films were reasonably popular, though. When I think of Sherlock, Jeremy Brett, Benedict Cumberbatch and Basil Rathbone come to mind.
As much as I loathed the idea back in 1997, I'm far more interested now what Nicholas Cage would have done with Superman compared to what we've got in the last two decades.

Yeah I think Disney, and most other studios, unless truly independent, would Hollywood-ise it, to the point where it becomes a cardboard cutout of James Bond, rather than a proper representation of who the character is fundamentally and the many ways that can explored.

Relating it back to the racebending discussion, if it’s gonna be done, EON should be the ones do it.

I don't think it should appeal to a younger audience. Aren't the Bond films certified as 12A? Even then, a twelve year old isn't going to understand much of what's going on in the movie.

Also a Bond in his twenties means he'll be in the Navy Reserves not on a double-0 mission.

Based on the current state, a shift to outright US productions and corporate control could also affect the existing catalog. Meaning, where a public outcry is directed at the content of a particular film it could be excised from streaming and other availability. And the current owners would apologize and ask forgiveness.

That's happening increasingly with classic films and familiar comedy performers without much pushback.

It's good that EON remain a family business, I trust their judgment, and I don't see any indication that will change. If anything, current events may firm up their resolve to get the next film ready as restrictions lift.
