I don't know about Neil personally. I'm not sure why but he has always seemed like a more authoritative/father type in his look and his acting, even back then, so for him to have been James Bond would've been an odd choice to me. I think it would have ended up like another A View to A Kill situation.

Sure, if they had waited to cast him in his late 50s! ;)

But I mean even back in the 80s, he still had that dad-vibe, to me anyway.

Sam Neill's Bond screen test was rather blah. Good actor, but he didn't suit the part.

Bond is a Dad in the novels, he just never knew.

With regards to Sam Neill, I get what you mean. He can be smooth, but he just isn’t ‘cool’. Just something you either have or haven’t as an actor.

I know what you mean, although have you seen Reilly? He's not supposed to be a Bond-style tongue-in-cheek spy, but he does have a commanding coldness to him which you could see as possibly translating to 'cool' in a Bond movie. He's certainly showed he has a bit of twinkle about him in many movies since, not least Jurassic Park of course. I certainly think they were right to test him at least.

Sam Neill has the same sort of 'Cool' that James Mason had and they sort of even look alike. So I think Sam Neill's would have really exuded 'Calm Confidence' as Bond.

No I haven’t, but I’ve heard good things and it sounds good/ up my street. I will if it comes onto Sky or Netflix.

They were right to test him, I agree.

I've forgotten how to use the spoiler tag, myself.

Back to Sam Neill, I love the way he seamlessly incorporates "Bond, James Bond" during his Tania scene screen-test.
Picked up a copy of the spy thriller HOSTAGE (1992) sometime back. I thought certain moments gave an indication what his Bond might have been like.
I wouldn't call it a masterpiece on the level of say, OHMSS , but it is nice to see Art Malik and Talisa Soto.

By ‘cool’ I meant Steve McQueen or Leo Di Caprio. Mason is ‘cool’ in the collected, calm confidence way, as you say.

A Bond actor has to have both and I think all the actors have so far.

Yeah, a top ingredient for a Bond actor to possess.

I wonder if the producers already have like a top 3 list. Or if they've not even given it any serious thought yet

I remember when they spoke about Daniel getting the part, Barbara apparently had her eyes on him in Elizabeth (1998) I wonder if there is someone she's had her eyes on for years to replace Daniel?

I think the ideal one has both, but to be honest I think only Connery and Craig have really truly managed it.

Leo isn’t cool. He specializes in characters that lose their stuff throughout the course of the movie.

Funny I was thinking about that earlier: who does 'cool' nowadays like McQueen used to, and there's not a lot because I don't think movies really work in that way a lot any more. But I think you could say Clooney used to sometimes and Pitt still does occasionally: he comes out of Once Upon Hollywood looking cooler than DiCap. Maybe Cate Blanchett?

Now Cate Blanchett, my favorite actress alive, is, in fact, cool. She played Bob Dylan before, perhaps she could be the next Bond.

Your probably right. Connery and Craig are the ‘coolest.’

But isn’t being a sophisticated cad, erudite, witty charmer like Moore ‘cool’ too? He is to me. ‘Stiff Brit’, but cool with it, as he doesn’t care.

    He is pretty cool IMO.

He’s got style, charisma and doesn’t (seem to) really care about what anyone things of him bar his (pretty brilliant) acting.

Funny, I didn't immediately think that's a terrible idea! :) I think someone with extreme 'cool' factor probably could transcend a lot of the casting requirements if they were amazing enough to watch. Glenda Jackson played King Lear on stage- and why shouldn't she?

I'm obviously not actually saying 'get a woman in' at all, but it does make me think how star power and being just incredibly great to watch and charismatic is more important to me than looking like Hoagy Carmichael. Ideally you'd find someone who did both, but if you can't, go for the first one.

He's certainly halfway there as he has the confidence and relaxed nature of someone who is cool, but he's a bit too cheesy to be actually stylishly cool. He's fun, we laugh with him: he doesn't smoulder like your James Deans and McQueens. The closest he's probably come to actual cool is that photo of him drinking a whisky which Habitat sell.

I love him, don't get me wrong, but he's not McQueen cool- he's doing something else.

Roger is the "I would have enjoyed a piss-up with him" kind of cool, rather than the kind of cool that someone like McQueen was. It's no coincidence that he was known for being a bit of a prankster after a few too many.

I can see why as in Nip Tuck he is suave, mean, cool and charming. Great show.

He’s got the physical presence too. But, he also can come across a tad ‘slimy’.

Also, he’s (yes, I am a broke record 😉) not British.
