Who should/could be a Bond actor?

  • It's not cringe in the good way. Listen I think he would be a great Bond, but there is no arguing he is very unfit for certain roles. e.g. a villain like Dominic Greene. He is too good looking.

    But I could be wrong:

You have a point indeed. Where'd the head shot go though? Link me up Scotty.

A note with regard to Jason Isaacs - he could play a Villain SOOOO well. Of course, some fans might wind up liking him more than whoever plays Bond in such a film. As for having a villain who is something of a former-Bond-type, that already was done - albeit with a contemporary of Bond - in GE. Still, on the simple basis that he's a terrific actor, with a great look, and should be able to portray a compelling character somewhere in a Bond film, that would describe Mr. Isaacs. In fact, for a variety of actors considered too old to portray Bond in more than a single film, this concept would apply. In each instance, though, the Bond actor would have to be VERY likable in the role, lest the audience like the Villain, or M, or whomever, more than Bond.

Isaacs would also make an excellent M; but perhaps he would be a bit too close to Fiennes. I also think that Elba could make for an interesting M.

I don't think Elba would make a great M: he's just too much like Bond. You can't have two Bonds.

He would work with a younger Bond.

Craig and Isaacs once played a gay couple in a play. Imagine if that'd been two Bonds!

I think that'd still be ten years away for Elba though, he's still giving off handsome leading man vibes.
I don't think M should be the sexy alpha male; it's more interesting to give Bond a different type of person to butt up against.

Well he’s at an interesting point of his career; he can still pla the alpha male in his prime, but take the hair color out with a refined grey beard, and he could easily play the older spy chief and not the blunt instrument.

But then he'd be an older alpha male; it'd be like having Connery as M in the 90s when he was still playing leads. I dunno, it could work in some way I guess (and obviously Fiennes has been a leading man plenty of times, although I'd say perhaps in a slightly character actor way) but I don't feel like he'd be the best choice for it.

I've not seen it, but a good point of comparison it seems like would be The King's Man; wasn't Fiennes the lead in that?

I like the idea of M being a former agent; an interesting dynamic could be established with a younger agent. This was toyed with a bit with the introduction of Fiennes ; it could be explored further in a new incarnation.

    "Butt up against" ?
The note before yours referred to: "Craig and Isaacs once played a gay couple in a play."
Perhaps they already acted out some of that "butt up against" thing ?

I'm actually a fan of Elba as M. The appeal to me is that you have someone who is such a big screen presence (an 'alpha male' as has been said here) who could literally have been Bond in some alternate universe. It makes sense that a younger Bond would respect such a man, and Elba's age makes him convincing enough to act as that 'older mentor' to a younger agent.

It might not work for every version of a new M/Bond, and I think it'd be the sort of thing that would have to be considered on a script level (they'd have to have clear personality contrasts between Bond and Elba's M, develop a different dynamic to this new onscreen relationship), but I can see it working, if not with Elba then a prominent actor like him.

I haven't seen a lot of his work admittedly, but I thought he was quite bland and at times wooden in McMafia.
In my opinion, I think we could do better

I didn't like him in McMafia at all, but I really thought he was good in Rogue Agent on Netflix recently. He played a con man who pretended to be an MI5 officer.

Just watched the trailer for Rogue Agent. James has a weak voice unfortunately

He can probably lower it with some practice.

Out of the Americans I think Adam Driver would have been the most interesting casting choice. Clooney and Hamm are just too stereotypically handsome.

If you deepfaked A*d*n T*rn*r into that Norton trailer, I'd want to see that film! :D
Hang on, did I say that out loud?!

Big fat no to Adam Driver. He’s great and all, but I don’t want any Americans to play Bond (not even Jon Hamm, who looks just like Fleming’s Bond). And I say this as an American.

No to Driver, no to Norton. The latter can't act, not even an impersonation of a tree.

Well, why don’t you tell us who you’d like to play Bond?

EDIT: Sorry, I'll behave myself. And besides, in all honesty if EON announced Turner had been chosen for Bond, I wouldn't be 100% mad about it, it would be interesting to see where they go with it.

@MajorDSmythe ... Wow!! That's a good shout out, even if you were being facetious! Driver would be weirdly fascinating as The Shadow.

I want to see thist film (although I did love Alec Baldwin's version and hoped for sequels back in the day)!!!

I wish to see a remake of Billy Zane's The Phantom. Really dark, gritty, bloody and scary, but with moments of Jim Carrey/Brendan Fraser type over the top humour and lots of voodoo magic. It would blow Deadpool out of the water.

I do feel like the outfit is a really big stumbling block with the Phantom though! :D It's this kind of Indiana Jones-ish adventure film and then you have the hero... wearing that.
At the least The Shadow looks kind of cool. :)
