I do remember one irate fan, who was disgusted at Craigs casting, commenting on this pic, "He looks like bloody Boris Becker!"
Couldnt have put it better myself!
Just thought the context of you being a racist prick was worth mentioning when we were talking about a black Bond. Shouldn’t have let the mask slip so many times if you didn’t want me to bring it up.
But do feel free to ban me mods because I think I’m done anyway. First @Perilagu_Khan a few years ago, then that Reaper guy, now you. Seems like nothing short of actually saying “I’m a racist” (which racists famously do of course) is enough proof. And I imagine it’ll only get worse as the films get more and more diverse, which I don’t really fancy sticking around for. Don’t worry though, I’ll be thinking of you when the next Bond isn’t Aidan Turner.
The mods/admin will take action when deemed appropriate so we don't need guidance on that. In the mean time lets all take a deep breath and count to 10.
Who's Aidan Turner ? The guy from the Hobbit movies ? He'd be rather a short Bond, wouldn't he ?
He would obviously be totally different than anyone we've had before - and I don't just mean the colour of his skin - but if they want to keep this more edgy, brooding thing going, he'd be a great choice.
(On the other hand, that might just be Greg Williams. That guy can make anyone look like James Bond on a picture or five...)
Can pull off non formal attire like Connery as well.
His instagram biography simply reads "shop-EH". ^^
The one thing about it though is I feel like everyone (for or against it) would just see him as Black Bond and not just James Bond himself. Everyone going on about the issue on Twitter, irate fans flooding sites with 1 star ratings because the franchise went "woke," etc. It feels the whole issue of his skin color would just overshadow the whole character and franchise. And please don't compare it with DC having blonde hair. I don't really think there is any comparison there.
As far as more "traditional" candidates, I've still got my eye on Thomas Doherty. He stars in a vampire film called The Invitation that is out in theaters now:
Unsurprisingly, the reviews are not very positive for the movie, though a lot of reviews have been very positive about Doherty, calling him very charming. In fact a lot of reviews have said that the two leads is the one positive thing about the whole movie. I even saw him compared to a young Sean Connery in a couple reviews.
A review I found on yahoo ends with this: "Nathalie Emmanuel does her best to keep Evie from coming off as entirely clueless. But the main attraction here is Thomas Doherty — or, more specifically, his distracting resemblance in several shots to a “Dr. No”-era Sean Connery. Who knows? If they really are looking for a younger actor to assume the 007 mantle in the next James Bond movie…"
Agreed @thelivingroyale ... You're far too valuable and intelligent to lose.
Saying we can't have a black Bond because everybody might be too racist about it is just not fair. Don't play into the hand of racists.
Eon have cast six great Bonds before, I have complete confidence they can and will do it again, and it will be the right person, black, asian, white, whatever. Bond just has to depart from the established Fleming background now, it's been too long. They made shit up for Skyfall about Bond's past, why can't they make up that he's Black now?
ALSO, Eon say they want to nail down the villain and their scheme before they really get the ball rolling on Bond 26. I think some folks may hate this, but all they have to do is... make a racist villain, very easy plot drama there. A Black Bond would face all the same enemies as a white Bond, now in a world where he has to navigate racism. Would be interesting.
Thing is, it doesn't matter if "Sevond"* Is black or white, there will always gonna be fans that will "dump" on him....
As for the Traditional Formula, i don't think we'll be seeing anything close to the "Connerond - Brosbond"* films soon, with the boom that the MCU created after "The Avengers", every movie franchise from now on has to be connected, or at least that's what modern cinematography studios think...
*Bond#7
*Connery To Brosnan
It's nice to see someone consider it and think about their own preconceptions rather than just come out with a kneejerk 'I'm not racist!'. I certainly have, and I think it's healthy to do so.
I'm not saying you're wrong or right in your opinions, and I'm certainly not calling you racist; but it's just refreshing to see someone saying that they're giving it some thought and that there isn't a binary answer for it.
I'm not mega keen on that: racism hasn't really played a big part in Bond's world up to now because it is, on the whole, escapism. Obviously it dipped in with LALD, and then the ending to NTTD (which felt a bit jarring to me), but I'm not sure it should aim to be tackling such a serious issue as it might come off feeling a little trite. But maybe it would work, I guess nothing should be off the table when considering where to take it.
Pretty par for the course for this thread unfortunately.
And yes, let’s please keep @thelivingroyale.
I would also much prefer an escapist Black Bond. Give me Black Brosnan. Not all stories featuring POC have to be about racism. But it would be a unique angle for Bond.
I'm not interested in Sope as Bond. He looks good in that Greg Williams footage but so what? Many actors would come across well doing the same..doesn't mean he's Bond
Cavill is desperate for fame. No interest in him as Bond.
Sope is certainly in with the right people, clearly, has the physicality and regimen set already, has the right background - he's more qualified and in better position for fitting into the Craig system than most brought up in this thread.
I think the comb back didn't look good because he was balding too much. But relaxed, his shorter top looked quite good
"I could not see what bearing that would have on playing the role, but it was out of my hands, and meant to be," Heughan wrote in his upcoming memoir.
Heughan continued, “So I went along to the Bond HQ and tried out for the casting director. Afterwards, I was invited to head up to the next floor, where producer Barbara Broccoli was waiting for me, like M, sitting in a leather chair across a large table. A replica gold revolver served as a centerpiece in front of her. The director of ‘Casino Royale,’ Martin Campbell, was also there. We spoke a little about Scotland and about Bond, read the scene once, then I left. It was all so quick, the sweat beneath my leather jacket just starting to form. It was all just so cool and crowned by the fact that Barbara was charming and delightful. When I left, I half wondered whether I was about to be tested with a car chase home.”
