It's not perfect, but up to Cuba (with the exception of the title track and the Madonna cameo) it's actually very decent.

    1. Casino Royale (has stood the test of time)
    2. GoldenEye (for the effect it had on me the day I saw it in the cinema)
    3. Skyfall (does many things very right)
    4. The World is Not Enough (Brosnan's most mature performance, could have been a classic)
    5. Tomorrow Never Dies (solid first half, after Malaysia goes downhill)
    6. Quantum Of Solace (for the effect it had on me the day I saw it in the cinema)
    7. Die Another Day (turns into a B-movie the moment Jinx arrives)
  • I'm so happy that TWINE does so well. IMO it is Brosnan's most emotional performance.
  • 1.Casino Royale
    2.Skyfall
    3.Quantum Of Solace
    4.Tommorow Never Dies
    5.Die Another Day
    6.The World is Not Enough
    7.GoldenEye
  • It seems that, SF and CR, really are of a standalone quality among the 7 newest Bond films.

As of this moment I'd have to say...

    1) CR
    2) QoS
    3) SF
    4) GE
    5) TWINE
    6) TND
    7) DAD

Numbers 2 through 4 always seem to be in a state of flux though.

Really interesting to see that -to my great pleasure- TWINE is doing so well :-). It's the most Fleming-esque portrayals of Bond by Brosnan. It doesn't have a cheesy tank chase. It does have more characterization and deeper motivations for each character. It is more emotional. And I wouldn't be surprised if Brosnan personally thinks it's his best outing as 007.

I think Brosnan has said before in interviews that TWINE is his favourite out of the ones he made because it was deeper and more in line with how he wanted his Bond to be. I agree with you on TWINE. I think it's a very underrated film and I've loved it ever since I first saw it. It's definetely a top ten Bond film for me.

But I disagree on the tank chase. One of the most exciting, original and memorable chase scenes from the series. The bit at the start of the chase where the villain thinks he's gotten away and then Bond comes crashing through the wall in the tank and the Bond theme kicks in, is one of my favourite moments of the series. It's a brilliant bit in a brilliant film imo.

I have to disagree. Brosnan seemed to think Goldeneye was his best based on a lot of his interviews.

If Brosnan really said that TWINE was his best, then I suggest that he may want to watch it again carefully, including his performance during some key scenes. Just saying.....

He said in the EoN doc that he couldn't remember much after GE.

"What was the second one? TND or TWINE? I always get confused. I only remember GE (laughs) the rest is a blur".

If you are long time Bondfan on this forum as some people are it is not easy after a whyle not repeating your self in explain why. CR is more for none Bondfans or American fans. There is enough in CR to be entermaint, but the movie for me is to violence for introduction and don't like or understand the plot/don't like Bondgirl. Somethings from Ge/Twine in CR or Skyfall not work for me in those movies also and Skyfall realy making a mess from it exept the QOS left overs. It is strange to DAD above CR, but whole DC era is not a standalone. I wait on Quantum now and there pushing thing forward, Skyfall have some of those elements, but in inspecialy i not like the TDK and 24 elements. So i rank DAD, CR and Skyfall in one row because i think this moost fair on the moment.

It's not been a golden era IMO, although DC's arrival has certainly raised the tone. I hesitated putting TND above SF but at the end of the day I'd rather watch TND. The last three are almost unrankable. I have a visceral dislike of GE, partly thanks to Eric Serra, but also because it marked such a depressing step back after the Dalton era. TWINE is bland enough to be less offensive than GE to me, although it's still poor, and DAD really just has to come bottom of any list to do with Bond.

I like CR and QoS especially for DC's performance, although they're not really 'favourites' of mine, but SF was a big disappointment.

A lot of it has to do with the fact that it was the last Bond flick ('recency effect', a form of cognitive bias) , that it came after QoS that was controversial, that it brought back some familiar elements that had been missing for some time (I don't count the Aston) and that it was not half bad.

Most of the high ranking goes to the 'recency bias' though. It's the same thing with top 10 best song lists, top 10 best movie lists etc. Always weighted more to more recent items.

Give it 10 years and it will inevitably drop down the ranks, if decent Bond movies are made between now and then. Mark my words. CR will retain its positioning, like GE, FRWL, TSWLM etc., but I'm pretty sure SF will decline.

    It's just most recent

Let's see. In part you are right yes. But I am fairly convinced the ratings for SF on Metastatic, Rottentomatoes, Critics Choice, Roger Ebert and IMDB will not go down anymore.

In all honesty? I think, like CR, SF will go down artistically, character-wise, theme-wise as one of the best Bond films. Moreover, I have a gut feeling that Bond fans in general are more critical, sometimes perhaps slightly more cynical and more conservative as compared to reviewers, movie journalists and bloggers from newspapers.

If you ask 10 years from now which Craig-Bond-film had the most memorable Bond villain, then already SF wins it.

Whoa there.... Bond 24 & 25 (both Craig as far as I know) could have an especially memorable villain.

Personally, I have a feeling EON is completely going to top Skyfall in every way (except box office) with Bond 24. CR will retain its place in the rankings as will always be fondly remembered for the intro of a new Bond & approach (like GE), and because it was based on a book which helped form the Bond character.

My own personal view is that CR is far superior to SF and that over time that will become more and more evident in fan polls etc.

However, it will take a long time for the general aura around SF to diminish. It is a huge blockbuster, the likes of which Bond hasn't seen since TB (another rather overrated entry IMO). Sometimes a movie develops an iconic reputation, like LALD, even when frankly it's not all that. LALD's got an amazing soundtrack, which I think helps with its iconic status.

I am also confident that B24 will be a better movie than SF, but I'm also expecting that it probably won't do as well commercially.

For me SF works because of several iconic elements:
--> A terrific theme song. It certainly had more resonance than Chris Cornell's YKMN. At least song-wise I think SF will go down with GF, LALD, NDIB and AVTAK as one of the best Bond evergreen's.
--> Lush, crisp, fantastic imagery and cinematography. Despite all the, sometimes overblown, complaints of CGI and lack of "couleur locale", it's one of the most beautifully shot Bond films.
--> At least till now the most memorable Bond villain from the Craig-films. I was watching yesterday SF with a date I've just met ;-). The look on his face when Javier Bardem was completely stealing the show, for me was priceless.
--> The only Bond film with insight in Bond's childhood past. Completely unique.
--> An emotional resonant ending, comparable to OHMSS (Tracy) and CR (Vesper). Judi Dench's last moments on screen....goosebumps.
--> Tensely written, complex characterizations. 'M', Bond, Silva. Perfect drama....

I still need to see if Bond 24 can do better than SF. Looking at all the reviews....
But it could be possible that SF created such a momentum that, now, a new era of Bond fans rose up...and are more willing to rate a Bond film on IMDB well above the 8.5 mark. Similar to all the Nolan fans completely embracing his work....even on IMDB.

Also, critical reviews on IMDB, RottenTomatoes, Metacritic and Critics Choice are now set in stone. Reviewers like Roger Ebert gave their verdict. And so far....I can only see slightlllyyyy lower rating for SF compared to CR.
