SUPERMAN RETURNS was one of the few films in my life that I was absolutely OBSESSED with before it had come out. I grew up with the Reeve films, and the idea of it being a sequel to the first two sounded promising. It’s absolutely one of those films I wanted to like more than I actually did, convincing myself that maybe I’ll like it better if I watch it more, and that maybe the sequel will enhance what was set up. This was all due to having been so invested in the movie that I couldn’t just let myself be disappointed.

Now I’d probably rank it on the very bottom of the first five films because I just find it miserable to watch. SUPERMAN IV is very bad, but it at least has Reeve and it’s mercifully shorter.

The Donner Cut absolutely does not work as its own film, and it doesn’t even work as a sequel to the first film.

I actually made my own hybrid cut of the film. The way I see it, neither version of the film is perfect, but I do believe there’s a better film between them. One of the big issues of the Donner cut is that it deleted way too much Lester footage that was crucial. For example, we see Lois and Clark being brought to the entrance of their honeymoon suite, but just as they enter the door we cut away!

Another issue is the that Superman never makes an appearance until 40 mins in when the boy is rescued at Niagara Falls. So in my cut I actually keep the Paris sequence because it at least serves as a reintroduction of both Superman and Lois as characters and as a couple. After the villains are freed from the phantom zone, THEN we jump forward to the Daily Planet with Lois realizing Clark is Superman.

As for the ending, I actually stuck with the memory wipe scene not just because turning the world backwards was already done in the first, but also because the sequence was never finished. As it is in the Donner Cut, the time reversal actually comes out of nowhere and doesn’t make sense in context. If Donner had completed II as intended, we would have seen the super villains making a grand world tour. We see them destroy the Eiffel Tower with their heat vision. The skylines of Tokyo and Moscow are engulfed in flames. The world is practically decimated. Superman decides to reverse time as a way of restoring the world, but that also means losing the time he spent with Lois as a result. But in the cut it never feels earned. We don’t even get that moment of Superman deciding to reverse time, because it was never filmed!

But another reason I kept the memory wipe scene is beside I think Margot Kidder is doing some really great acting there, and the chemistry between her and Reeve is absolutely palpable.

Which means I absolutely keep the last scene with Superman arriving at the White House with a new roof, apologizing to the president, and vowing to never let him down again. It’s a great ending.

That sounds pretty perfect. The Donner cut annoyed me too- there's definitely good stuff in there but also losing a load of the good stuff from the final version too. And yes, no Superman until such a long way in just didn't work.
I had no idea about the original plan for the time reversal, that's quite good.

I'm going to be honest, i sincerely think this is the perfect time for Superman to return to what he was before. In today's world, where people live arguing and debating ideologies, instead of accepting and respecting one another, it is time for a hero to appear and bring with him the virtues of kindness and hope. Superman is much more than just another superhero, he is someone who treats everyone equally and brings people hope, regardless of their views and beliefs.

I'm still hoping for a bigger villain like Brainiac, Parasite or even Toyman.

I am quite interested to see what happens with this. The only reservation I have, though it's more a problem with Gunn's plans a whole, is the fact that James Gunn seems to deep-diving into a whole DC universe, including his own Batman. Why can't he just explore other characters and leave Matt Reeves to handle to the "Batverse"? Then if Reeves is keen enough, Reeves' Batman and Gunn's Superman could become a universe rather than having the fandom eventually split between one Batman and the other because no matter how optimistic Gunn might be, it's gonna happen and will hinder more than help both projects - in my opinion.

Well, they recently confirmed that Season 4 of Superman and Lois would be the last one as they don't want to have two Live-Action Supermen competing. So who knows what could happen to Pattinson's Batman? And yes, i am aware that The Batman 2 was included on the Elseworlds slate, but since The Brave and The Bold was also announced, i wouldn't be surprised if they cancelled any following project related to the Reevesverse.

Well they're definitely not going to cancel the Reevesverse, and they certainly won't be pulling The Batman Part II. They'd be fools to do either of these things. I just find it a strange business decision to straight away decide they want their own Batman. Again, why not test the waters with this new Superman before putting all your eggs in one basket?

I am in the minority , I loathed “ The Batman “ ; but I agree that it would be foolish not to do a follow up.

If that's the cape length for real, then I'm done with Superman in the movies.

Overwhelming, even in non action scenes, in recent years the cape is added in post; this allows them to control it and have it move exactly as desired. If real this could be a stand in cape.

I wouldn't mind a shorter cape, similar to the Wayne Boring version of Superman. TBH, I didn't care for Cavill's cape length. I don't like Superman's cape to be floor length. Reminds me too much of Underdog.

True, Cavill's cape was animated to good effect.

I’ll take a short cape over Cavill’s dragging on the ground. That said, I thought Reeve’s costume had the best cape length.

If it's real and unaltered I think he looks great- bright colours at last. And the knickers are back.
If the pics are real it looks like he's having his photo taken so I would guess the cape might be final. I can get used to it- it doesn't look wrong to me.

The more that I look at it , and searching around to see if it's appeared elsewhere, I'm beginning to think that this is a fake; the material and logo are off. My apologies.

It does appear that the title change is legit; Superman: Legacy is now just Superman.

Some of my thoughts on Superman:

As @peter and I were discussing on the Batman thread with the Flash, I hope Zod is given a MAJOR rest for a LONG time. WB seems to have a hard-on for having Zod always be a villain, even in non-Superman movies! From being the only real villain in one movie, to being turned into another villain (Doomsday) in another, being reused again in another timeline, it’s time too move on. Using Zod at this point is as lazy as using Lex as a solo villain again and again. Relating to this topic, I’m actually kind of scared if just Lex and the Authority are the only villains of this movie. I know Brainiac is heavily rumored, but I think they need to reveal him now. It would also be bad if he is just a third act reveal. At this point, I would take Toyman as a villain. He has potential to be a great villain. I’ve been writing my own Superman screenplays because the movies don’t explore his mythology like they should have. It’s time for WB to have Superman face a new, fresh threat (from his comics), that proves that both his world and our world truly need him on a daily basis.

Secondly, I hope James Gunn doesn’t overdo his trademark humor at certain points. That might be the MCU’s excuse when they’re on autopilot, or all else fails. Or WB should have realized beforehand that Zack Snyder was too dark and polarizing too handle a big shared universe. However, James Gunn has the chance to do something great here. If he can truly mix the two styles together, there is hope for DC movies’ future.

These two things can apply to the Supergirl movie as well.

I am. However, there are some things I’m (and a few other people) are worried about. See above for my takes.
