There seems to be a lot of love or hate for the character of Jaws (not the lovely Richard Kiel of course, bless him) after his appearance in MR maybe made the character a clown rather than the carnivore he was in TSWLM.

Personally i think he should have been contained to TSWLM alone and remembered as an almost superhuman character, killed by either the shark at the end or left to drown with the crumbling Atlantis around him.

How do you feel about him ? carnivore or clown ?

Unfortunately on an overall basis i think :

CARNIVORE : 0
CLOWN : 1

He was a carnivore in TSWLM but turned into a clown in MR.

What could have been a great character in a great film, ended up as a joke, as the "joke era" began. In Moonraker it was even worse - we had Dolly! Therefore:

    CARNIVORE : 0
    CLOWN : 4

  • I'd say MR makes him a clown, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

He was great in The Spy Who Loved Me, though there were some clownin'around moments... but in Moonraker, he was an absolute joke - and really served no purpose to be in the film, other than he was popular in the previous film... but since Moonraker felt like a campy retread over TSWLM, why not bring back the same henchman and make him ridiculous... he was in fact a red nose and rimshot away from being a REAL clown..

He is the best part of Moonraker next to the double-taking pigeon. He deserves more respect for his role in that movie.

i don't know - i think that drunk on the bridge who sees the coffin, and gargles and coughs his way through a series of heart attacks before tossing his cigarette into the water stole the show for me..

Though Jaws is a classic character, it is in film arguments with fellow film lovers who doubt the impact of the Bond films that bring upon the discussions of some horribly cheesy characters. Jaws in usually #1 on the list.

i think you mean Moonraker...... either way - how fitting that the biggest Clown in the Bond franchise crashes in on a circus tent - which just happens to be out in the middle of nowhere.

@haserot Or even a legendary carniverous clown?

Actually, I'd probably be happy describing him that way... B-)

I'll go with carnivore. He's the only saving grace out of the TSWLM disaster, portraying an iconic figure which will be long remembered. In MR he certainly is used as a clown but is still very much an unbeatable unstoppable force. I'm going with Carnivore! But I certainly don't have any beef with him, he really is a legend!

He started off as a carnivore but turned into a clown - "an unbeatable, unstoppable force" that became a cartoon character - more so than he ever was in TSWLM :)

Maybe it was because I saw these films first when I was a kid but Jaws always seems really sinister to me, that scene when he's coming down the alleyway in MR (ironically dressed as a clown) is genuinely disturbing. I know Broccoli and Gilbert have gone on record saying how kids loved Jaws, but I didn't he terrified me and gave me nightmares! Even now I consider him as a threatening character first and a comedy buffoon second.

I agree with this. Right now I am grateful for the clown Jaws because I have a 6 year old son who has never seen an entire James Bond movie, but bits and pieces of a few of them. Jaws automatically became his favorite character. Just this past weekend he wanted me to get a picture of Jaws so he could copy it and draw a Jaws picture. He did a great picture (for a 6 year old) and my wife posted it on Facebook. We are both facebook friends with Richard Kiel ( I have met him twice) and he saw the picture, told us to send it to him and he would autograph it for free and send it back. He is such a nice guy

He never was a serious character and I never found him one bit interesting or intimidating. Made worse by the 'if you can get him" line in MR

I often wonder where Jaws was advertised and how Drax knew of him...
