That would be The Living Daylights and Serenity for me.
The heroes are both world-weary, but where James is working under the auspices of the 'system', Mal is pure rogue. Both have a sense of justice, both are ready to kill, and both take no joy in the process.
Both movies operate in worlds of greys as opposed to simplistic blacks & whites.
Both movies are travelogues on Earth and respectively in the new solar system.
Both movies see allies/friends killed (sacrificial lamb syndrome).
Both movies depict mistrust & difficulty in romance.
Both movies have an ultimate fight, but where Bond dispatches Necros & Whittaker, Reynolds lets The Operative live to see his evilness, and cannot fully destroy the Alliance.
In TLD Bond uses the Muhajadeen to help fight his enemies. In Serenity Mal uses the Reavers; both groups were empowered/created by their respective systems of Western Earth and futuristic Parliamentary Governments.
TLD has a happy ending whereas Serenity has a bitter-sweet one.
Lastly, TLD has the better soundtrack and Serenity has the better social commentary.
So, no question here as to a theme in my favourites, eh?
Now, many might not have so many similarities in their favourites... like DarthDimi's favourite Non-Bond 2001- I mean, what Bond is THAT similar to? Still, the assignment stands, and it will count towards your final grade. ;)
Comments
The White Persian is there in both.
Sharks play a key role in both
There is an explosion at the end of the story
Key characters are left adrift at sea
The settings are islands
A main character dismayed at an older woman trying to seduce him?
:-O
My favourite non-Bonds are 1. North By Northwest & 2. Angels & Demons.
-All are thrillers.
-All feature amazing locations
-Two feature 'mass extinction' plots (TSWLM & A&D)
-Two feature smart, resourceful leading ladies who hold their own (TSWLM & A&D)
-Two feature seductive blonde eye candy on a train (FRWL & NBNW)
-All feature a dapper leading man well groomed in well fitting suits/jackets
-Three feature Eurotrash villains
-Two feature a hero somewhat in over his head (NBNW & A&D) who uses his wits
-Three feature deception at the core of the plot (NBNW, FRWL & A&D)
-All feature outstanding musical scores
-All four feature above average intelligence villains
-Three feature leading ladies who end up shagging (or marrying) the leading man at the end
-All were massive money-makers in the respective years that they were released
-One features a legend who never won an Oscar (Grant)
-Three feature deserving Oscar winners (Hanks, Zimmer, & Barry - but not for Bond tragically)
-One features one of the most affable actors (& by all accounts, people) of all time (Moore)
-Two have connections to the Beatles (Barbara Bach is married to one, and Matt Munro sang a version of Yesterday)
Great casts, greater performances, tender touching scenes. Hero loses the love of his life as rivals try to eliminate him. Wonderful soundtrack. All around a polished film
- Both are of a long lasting franchise.
- Both are first and foremost entertainment and filled with action.
- Both have dark moments when Bond/Captain Picard get confronted with an incident of their past. Bond and 006 in the PTS, Captain Picard being Locutus of Borg.
- Both have a female main character who has gone through a horrifying experience and are appealing to Bond's/Captain Picard's conscience. Natalya to Bond, Lily to Picard.
- Both movies were made within a year.
- Both movies are considered one of the very best in the franchise.
- Both movies have a main villain and his/her minions. Trevelyan with Xenia, Ourumov and Boris, the Borg Queen and the Borg.
- Both movies were the most successful up to that point within the franchise worldwide.
TMWTGG features Bernard Lee as M, and Schindler features one of his successors in the role (Ralph Fiennes).
Both have a bald villain.
Both are like bad acid trips in memorable segments.
Helicopters are important in key scenes, with an awesome accompanying score (Raid on Piz Gloria/Ride of the Valkyries)
Both are based on fantastic novels.
Both are released at the end of their decades.
