@Birdleson - I'm curious to see what you think the appeal of The Man With The Golden Gun is. To me, it sounds rather bland.

@Birdleson- Interesting. I'd understand if something like A View To A Kill would produce something of that effect, but TMWTGG doesn't seem to produce a threatening or overtly ominous effect. I guess I could buy that it sounds like noir. I personally don't see it, but to each their own.

Oh why don't you all like the title "Goldfinger". I think it is just perfect

    1. Goldfinger
    2. The Man With The Golden Gun
    3. From Russia With Love
    4. Dr. No
    5. Casino Royale
    6. Skyfall
    7. Golden Eye
    8. You Only Live Twice
    9. Live And Let die
    10. Thunderball
    11. Moonraker
    12. Spectre
    13. Diamonds Are Forever
    14. The Living Daylights
    15. A View To A Kill
    16. For Your Eyes Only
    17. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    18. The Spy Who Loved Me
    19. Licence To Kill
    20. Octopussy
    21. The World Is Not Enough
    22. Tomorrow Never Dies
    23. Die Another Day
    24. Quantum Of Solace
  • 1. Live and Let Die (just a certain ring to it I love)
    From Russia with Love
    The Spy who Loved Me
    The World is Not Enough
    Goldeneye
    Diamonds are Forever
    Skyfall
    The Living Daylights
    For Your Eyes Only
    Goldfinger
    Casino Royale
    Dr. No
The Man with the Golden Gun
    Thunderball
    You Only Live Twice
    Octopussy
    Moonraker
    A View to a Kill
    Quantum of Solace
    Spectre (uncreative)
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (I feel bad putting it this low, but it's NINE syllables. Just too long.)
License to Kill (boring and uncreative)
Tomorrow Never Dies (just awful, I much prefer 'Lies')
    24. Die Another Day (just awful all around)
  • I've always loved The Man with the Golden Gun. It has an air of danger, mystery, and an exotic character that is at the core of all things Bond.

Spectre, incidentally, is somewhere between Skyfall and Die Another Day, and looking back at my list, The Living Daylights should be a fair bit lower.
  • A good James Bond title must 'say' things. It should say 'espionage', 'danger' and can also hint at exoticism or romance.

    1. The Spy Who Loved Me
    2. From Russia with Love
    3. Live and Let Die
    4. The Man with the Golden Gun
    5. GoldenEye
    6. Tomorrow Never Dies (shoot me)
    7. Die Another Day (shoot me again)
    8. Casino Royale
    9. For Your Eyes Only
    10. Goldfinger
    11. The World Is Not Enough
    12. Skyfall
    13. You Only Live Twice
    14. Licence to Kill
    15. A View to a Kill
    16. Diamonds Are Forever
    17. Thunderball
    18. Moonraker
    19. The Living Daylights (why would you call a movie 'the living daylights'?)
    20. Octopussy (hilarious immediately, disagreeable later)
    21. Spectre
    22. Dr. No (errrrrmmm a movie about doctors?)
    23. Quantum of Solace (what?)
    24. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (so is Bond in every film, and God that is a long title...)

I like this idea of ranking!

I prefer titles that tell you what the movie or the movie's main character is about.

    The profession:
1 On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    2 Licence To Kill
3 The Spy Who Loved Me
    4 For Your Eyes Only

    The motto Bond lives by:
    5 Die Another Day
    6 You Only Live Twice
    7 Live And Let Die
8 The World Is Not Enough

    The villain:
9 The Man With The Golden Gun
    10 Dr. No
    11 Goldfinger
    12 Octopussy
    13 Spectre

The villains means to do evil:
    14 GoldenEye
    15 Moonraker

    Where the movie takes place:
    16 Skyfall
    17 Casino Royale

I'm afraid that's it, the rest is...well...let's see..

    The misleading title:
    18 From Russia With Love
    - ok, so it's a romantic date movie, great

    19 Diamonds Are Forever
    - wow, finally, the long awaited sequel to Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend!

    20 Thunderball
    - an ecological disaster movie, hmm...

    FAIL!
    21 Tomorrow Never Dies
    - call the author, we don't need that esoteric, mystic crap.

    22 A View To A Kill
    - call the lector, there is something wrong grammatically!

    23 The Living Daylights
    - call the lector, there must be some mix-up with the nouns

    24 Quantum Of Solace
    - call the lector and tell the bloody author he is FIRED!!!

The best: LIVE AND LET DIE.

    It is very islamic.
  • Something I've always thought about the title 'A View to a Kill' is that it naturally suggests a sniper. And that therefore it is more appropriate for TLD in regards to the beginning sniper arc, notwithstanding the short story on which it is actually derived from.

I’d need to ponder these but I will say right now that IMO the title of Fleming’s novel, From Russia, With Love, with the comma, is just the best goddam title for a spy novel ever.

They dropped the comma for the film which I think was a mistake.

@ToTheRight , I do the same thing with the exception of OP (funny, but dumb). And I put SP rather high.

Had Eon maintained the original titles: FROM A VIEW TO A KILL, TOMORROW NEVER LIES and LICENCE REVOKED, those would probably be higher for me.
I really preferred TOMORROW NEVER LIES and LICENCE REVOKED to their final titles.

I'm not huge on the "DIE" trio. I put SKYFALL down among those for the simple reason that was a Transformers toy back when I was a kid.
To me that was kind of like naming a Bond film SKELETOR.

Someone made a similar comment about Citizen Kane, that his last word being "Rosebud" because of a sled he owned as a child would be like if your mom sold your Transformers set when you were a boy and your last word was "Hasbro" :)) :)) :))
