That's it. It's all about him and his lousy falsetto. Falsetto is not Bond. The sensitive romantic lyrics are not Bond. This song does not serve Fleming's version of Bond, it serves Smith. Had Mendes or EON who easily had the authority told him to knock the falsetto off and tighten up the song, the reception would not have been nearly as critical. Falsetto can work in the hands of seasoned pros like the Bee Gee's. Here it doesn't work.
For those of you who feel sorry for him and the negative reaction he is getting in here and on the net, he is no little flower. He was all wrong for this, and got a a huge and undeserved gig over vastly more talented acts. And I don't believe bad buzz is good buzz. He can harm the film. He gives the critics amo. It is probably asking way to much for EON to show some backbone, realize they made a serious mistake, and protect their film by moving this whiny mess to the end credits. One could only dream. Ain't gonna happen.
It's already on No 1 in the charts in practically all European countries.
Even in the UK, which is a record as Adele's Skyfall only made it to No 2 in 2012 and didn't reach No 1 in too many countries.
Sam Smith will have the most successful Bond song ever at this hands.
I guess people find it not that bad after all.

Negativity like what we're seeing usually stems from a (very) vocal minority. Everyone has opinions, both positive and negative, but it sometimes seems those with the negative opinions feel they most need to be heard.

Spot on my friend and the success of Skyfall made EON think they needed another world wide smash with the biggest artist of the moment whether they were suitable for the job or not which Smith is on the evidence of this effort certainly not.
The thing is if he knocks his falsetto off he's got nothing it's his trademark. I certainly hope EON doesn't think this is way to go from now on. Before Skyfall everyone chosen was established and proven in their field not some mega selling fly by night who'll be forgotten in a decade.
Are we destined for this from now on, no experimenting or shaking up the formula, that being said it mirrors the state of commercial music today.

Actually I blame Jack White and Alicia Keyes for this. After the awesome and rocking "You Know My Name", on the next one it seems like they were pushing to be even edgier, which would have been great if the song hadn't sucked. And because of that EON has decided to play it safe since then with these old timey songs. Oh well.

Back to the song itself...I am picturing a lot of earthtones in the title sequence: sand and steel, like some of what was seen in the QoS titles. For some reason, the Tangier and Mexico City set pieces are what I think of most with the WotW.
