Another thing to note is Sony's influence. I reckon you pretty much rule out anyone who is not incorroprated in some form of contract with Sony BMG. Jack White/Alcia Keys Sony, Adele XL Columbia which is a Sony company. Smith is signed to a Sony owned label Capitol Records which is aquired when they bought over EMI so even if he is not a top choice for most, Sony will absolutley be pushing for him.

    Good point @SirHilaryBray.

So it's Sony's fault if AWTD was the title theme of Quantum of Solace?

I'm so glad they don't have the distribution rights anymore.

I agree with everything above except for "Cornell’s misfire " While not a huge radio hit, it is a great Bond theme.

Agreed! YKMN a misfire? It's one if the best Bond themes in the last 30 years.

Sounds very NIN to me. Speaking of which, I've always wanted Trent to get a shot at Bond. I think he would do wonders with it, including the score.

Personally, I'm feeling Kendra Morris. Caught Banshee at the end of one of the episodes of Ray Donovan and loved her voice.

i dont remember YKMN getting a lot of radio play here in the states - at least not here in Cleveland, but i do know SF got a lot of play.. i dont listen to the radio often, but i at least heard 3 or 4 times on the radio when the movie was out.

Has anyone suggested Shakira? Obviously a megastar with international appeal. Already did teo world cup songs. She has also made songs in a variety of genres, from country to hip hop to Latin salsa and rock. So I don't think shed have any particular problem with doing something brassier. The clincher for me is IF the PTS is in Mexico during day of the dead. Cutting from that to a Latin influenced theme song would be killer.

Dangerous Stark to base the theme more on one scene than the whole theme of the movie, for me Shakira has neither the talent or the appeal. 10/10 for thinking outside the box though.

What I will says is that I expect Newmans score for the day or dead theme to reflect the music in carnival of the scene i/e gaps in the score to allow for the drums etc. so the whole think interacts with whats going on the screen.

Given this is the second time London will really feature in a Bond, perhaps
We could get " Chas n Dave" back together for a right good old knees up
    Of a theme song ? :)) " Doing the Spectre walk, Oi !" ;)

Dr Gorner, what I am most disappointed about in this film is that London will feature again. Yawn!

It's good for tourism and the economy surely. Probably more beneficial than the Olympics at far lower costs....

I'm all for it. Prefer it to Mexico to be honest, although I'm curious to see how that bit turns out. Hoyte will likely make it work.

I love London its a great city. However Embankment, The Thames, Whitehall. London it a hell of big place but its the same imagaery over and over. So soon after Skyfall as well. London never featured much in Casino yet every location in that movie was amazing. Bond should be in London for his assignment and then just get on with showing us amazing locations is what I say.

Just occurred to me that if they wanted an Adele-like title sound (to book end a story that kind of started in SF), they might be looking at Idina Menzel. She certainly is popular, her last movie theme raked in the dollars and the accolades, and she has a set of pipes. I've only heard a few of her songs, but it strikes me that with the right song-writer, that could work. It's not the rock anthem that some of you are hoping for, though.

Some of the post had me checking out the Arctic Monkeys. Not a bad idea if they're going for a modern sound. Alternately, if they are looking for the more classic (vocal) sound, Michael Buble did a nice job with this Bond-sounding rendition of Cry Me A River. Nailed the ending at the 4:00 mark.

Or Streisand, who is past her prime … but so was Bassey in Moonraker. Streisand has the vocal chops. I remember a nice job in her Prisoner song for "Eyes of Laura Mars."

If we're suggesting the crooners, then I'm all for Connick Jr., especially in his recent Jazz mode (I think we're long overdue for a jazz influenced title track). The song below is pure silk...........

I agree. Connick, Jr. is a fine singer. A lot of the classic bond songs were performed by crooners and vocalists. We didn't have a "modern" sound until LALD. I like both styles. Duran Duran and Cornell smashed it. Carly Simon/Nobody Does It Better is one of my top two Bond songs -- it charted #2 on Billboard despite not exactly having a then-modern '77 sound. And many agree that KD Lang's traditional-sounding "Surrender" is much better than Sheryl Crow's modern title song for TND.

I'm with you on that. Carly Simon's track is one of the best ever done for a Bond film. The lyrics are simply brilliant and the the title of the track is as iconic as it comes. I like both styles too, and I hope they try something a little different this time and not try to go down the Adele sounding route again so soon.

Amazing and iconic song, topped only by, for me, DAF.

Adele did her song. It was good. I'd rather not (personally) have the same artist on consecutive Bond films. I'm more concerned that the song -- whatever it is, whoever performs it -- is as good as possible. I think about that cat-scratch duet for QOS and then the better Bassey song "No Good About Goodbye" (that actually fit the word solace in the song, and had some pretty good lyrics), and I wish the filmmakers/studio didn't try so hard to find "hot" artists just because they might sell a lot of music.

To be fair to them, they've often found themselves chasing the artist/s of the moment, but have still taken chances. Let's not forget it was only three films ago they hired Cornell, who I would imagine was about as well known to most people as Rory Kinnear when he was cast Tanner.

Commercial realities I'm afraid @writer5150, which is why we're likely going to have to endure Sam Smith shortly...

It's true what @RC7 says about Cornell though. That was a bit of a gamble, but he was known to many (at least to me) from Soundgarden & Audioslave, although not in any way shape or form in Adele's league.

I'm about as open-minded as anyone, but Sam Smith gives me pause. That soulful, breathy style -- if that's your thing -- just doesn't seem right for Bond. But I've been wrong before. I remember hearing the first few bars of Nobody Does It Better on the radio before the film came out and thought WTH??? (Sounded like toy piano chord at the beginning) The song quickly grew on me and became a favorite. I had the same WTH reaction when I first heard Die Another Day, which never grew on me as a Bond song.

I actually thought Die Another Day was a joke-song released by Madonna until her real song was finished. Sadly, I was wrong about that too.
