POLL: The best non-Bond films directed by Bond directors

Rank all the non-Bond films directed by Bond directors you have seen! The Bond directos are: Terence Young, Guy Hamilton, Lewis Gilbert, Peter R. Hunt, John Glen, Martin Campbell, Roger Spottiswoode, Michael Apted, Lee Tamahori, Marc Forster and Sam Mendes. (Let's keep all the directors of the 1967 version of Casino Royale and NSNA director Irvin Kershner out of the discussion.) You can easily find the filmographies of the various directors thanks to this list compiled by an IMDB user: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls002705007/ Once lots of lists are posted, I will compile a list based on the individual rankings.

My ranking:

1. American Beauty (Sam Mendes)
2. Road to Perdition (Sam Mendes)
3. Revolutionary Road (Sam Mendes)
4. Once Were Warriors (Lee Tamahori)
5. Away We Go (Sam Mendes)
6. Finding Neverland (Marc Forster)
7. Jarhead (Sam Mendes)
8. Stranger Than Fiction (Marc Forster)
9. World War Z (Marc Forster)
10. The Mask of Zorro (Martin Campbell)
11. The 6th Day (Roger Spottiswoode)

I haven't seen many potentially good ones, like Wait Until Dark (Terence Young), Alfie (Lewis Gilbert), Coal Miner's Daughter (Michael Apted) and Gorillas in the Mist (Michael Apted).

Difficult for me. I guess Monster's Ball is one of my favourites. Wait Until Dark too but then I have my reasons. ;-)

Worst non-Bond Young film, IMO, is Bloodline, despite James Mason and Audrey Hepburn starring in it.

As bad as DIE ANOTHER DAY was, certainly Lee Tamahori's ONCE WERE WARRIORS is the strongest film any of these directors did outside of Bond. One of the great cinematic experiences.

Agreed. It's unbelievable that those two movies were directed by the same guy, mere 8 years apart.

The obvious number 1 is the Saddam Hussein biography that Terrence Young directed ;)
