I don't think they'll kill M off. It sounds too much like fanservice. Brown and Lee retired with dignity; EON never went to extremes to write them out of the films.
Why not ? She was kidnapped in TWINE. And given how much screentime they give her in each film, I doubt she will retire quietly into the night. There will be a major scene for her last film... and I bet it will be her death.
  • Interesting. So most of You guys think that Bond 23 involves the death of M.

    Hm ...

Do You think her death alone would make a significant contribution to Bond 23 being sold to us as the most shocking of the movies? Might I offer an idea that's even more shocking than just the death of M?

How about M being revealed as the head of Quantum? Hah! Well, and in the grand finale of the movie, she dies anyway -- killed by Bond, maybe?

Seriously: remember the talk about the supposed title, "The Property of a Lady" ..? And that this lady was the head of Quantum and that the world is indeed her property? What if M turned out to be that lady?

Cool: the whole world in the hand of Judi Dench. Awesome ..!

I think I would love such a story line. However, I guess that there may be many clues in "Casino Royale" and "Quantum of Solace" speaking against that idea -- but did logic ever play a major role in this franchise?

Do you know how many traitors we've had for the last 4 movies ? Let's not go even further and reveal M is the biggest traitor of them all... No sorry, nethengauner... something more original than a traitor, please !! ;-)

OK. But on the other hand, how many deaths did we have in just the last movie?

    :)

Now what could be more shocking other than dead people or traitors? Well, a dead traitor, maybe -- and there we have it: M dies as a traitor after all ..!

Well, I guess You're right: not a very original concept ...

I rather like the idea myself nethegauner. Plays havoc with the already confusing time line (with Dench's M being quite new to the job in GE, then promoting Bond in CR etc) but who cares.

How is it confusing? She's clearly playing a different character.

I'd love for them to *finally* use the amnesia/attempted assassination of M arc of YOLT and TMWTGG. I'd even be okay with Bond not realizing he has a child out there. If any Bond can pull this off, it's Craig's.

I imagine The Property of a Lady as the next title.

If they manage to this correctly, I will be the first to hail Craig as the best Bond !

I just don't like the idea of bond killing M I do like the idea of them using elements of that and you only live twice for a new bond story. The way I see it bond is drugged M is killed with his gun and everyone assumes Bond Killed M even Bond who has slight amnesia after being drugged of course throughout the film he proves his innocence and discovers Quantum Killed M and there you have it. Though I fear DaltonCraig007 that you will read my idea and hate it as it essentially takes from Fleming but doesn't take all of Fleming. of course my plot outline The Property of a Lady still works as the films title.

Seriously peeps, if EON are reading this we are forcing another rewrite here! Let's not delay the film any longer - says the guy who started the M death angle! lol

M being the head of Quantum shouldn't even be considered. I'm OK with Dench getting killed off. I'm OK with Craig being brainwashed to attempt to assassinate M. M as a traitor I feel is completely out of bounds.

One thing i want to point out Dench has the script when do we get the title?
they usually have the title decided upon by the time the press conference hits... so as the others have said, probably by November - just a short while before the cameras officially start rolling..

in terms of M being a traitor - I have to agree with Shadow.. all that would do is raise more subplots about Bond trusting his superiors - which we've already examined in QOS, we don't need to go back down that road again.. and so soon...

now, as far as M maybe being assassinated? - i would be fine with..... it would be shocking, and plus it's devoid of the trust issues that we could be plagued with.... the only downside to this, is that it could possibly turn into another revenge fueled mission....

but i am going to say that hopefully, this film will be devoid of QUANTUM... not that i have an issue with the group - i love it...... BUT....... we've established this shadowy organization in CR and QOS - i would like to see B23 be more like GF... let it be it be stand alone, and then revisit QUANTUM for B24...

thank god they are done with direct sequels (for right now anyway) - so I doubt B23 and 24 will be filmed back to back........... if they were, we would've already heard news about it by now.

  • it's all conjecture really at the end of the day....as I've said before we need a lighter Bond, let DC have a bit of fun and enjoy himself. That should mean an absence of M in the 'middle eight' of the movie - just beginning and end please.

One thing I really would like is Bond eating a bag of fish and chips in his Aston. Classy.

M taking Bond to Blades...then later near the middle they have Fish n Chips in india :)

but not RM or GF light that would be too much...

I like the realistic edge but a DR NO/FRWL/TB would be nice.

what if Dench's M is forced to step down aka politically assassinated...Q release her picture and profile wikileaks style while bond is away in India and tries to clear her name on the side while doing the main mission. But in the end JD's M decides that little cottage in (Canada/Norway/Malta/some tiny Caribbean island...etc) and her flowers are calling here more...and retires anyway.

Yeah, I want a break from the revenge and heavy handed trust angles. I want an exciting, compelling, FUN adventure with atmosphere. I want to watch this new film and wish I was in Bond's shoes. M being killed or turning out to be a traitor will just be a rehash of both Cr and QOS combined.

You are right about Brown.... as it was a new era of Bond they were starting, they wanted a new M....

but please bare in mind, that Bernard Lee was set to reprise his role of M in FYEO, but passed away.. so they wrote M out of the script, saying "he was on vacation." - but M's dialog was given to the new character, Bill Tanner..

I guess passing on is one way to look at retiring from a roll lol - but don't be confused as to think that he wanted to stop playing to the character, or that his contract was up, or that he was retiring from acting... he was simply called to a higher desk job ;-)

Can someone please post a link to a webpage/interview where there is evidence of Judi retiring the role of M in Bond 24. I'm quite surprised to hear it.

Bond 23 has some heavy hitters with high class talent. The news so far and the location scouting in South Africa combined with the confirmed cast gets me excited. If Judi were to wish her tenure as M to be over I think they shouldn't kill her off. Just retire her and leave Bond in the care of a new boss leaving him with her best graces. CR and QoS were largely M and Bond getting comfortable with each other and QoS ended with Bond giving 100% of his service to M. Killing her off wastes all that great characterization between the two of them. If Bond 23 decides to kill M It must be done in a with great ferocity. I picture Bond escorting M to her vehicle after a short briefing and as Bond continues past her vehicle it blows up and he is thrown back by the force. In the hospital he finds that M indeed was killed. Bond would have to figure out if the methods were of a terrorist cell, Quantum, or inside MI6 itself. If the movie hacked at Bond's mind and made him suffer more than ever before the movie would be beautiful. Keep in the style of CR and QoS. Craig's Bond gets hurt. He feels pain and takes damage. Make him less of a man than he is used to, put him in a situation where he loses control and his carte blanche. Leave him questioning everything around him, even his closest allies. Get him going rogue from MI6 to get away from allies turned supposed traitors and to investigate M's demise. If all that is incorporated I believe Bond 23 could be something special.

And we'd get angry, moody terminator Bond all over again. No thanks. That's not the sort of Bond film I want to see all over again so soon.

From what I can remember a thread on the old forums called "Bond 23 to be Dench's last film", was based on an opinion of someone wanting her M gone by the next film. They also pulled some quote out from thin air about Dench being contracted for 7 films, meaning the next would be her last.

Since then everyone has it in their head that Dench will leave, retire, be shot, killed, whatever, in the next film.

Also, as I'm sure you know @BradyM0Bondfanatic7, Dench has recently made clear her wishes to continue to play M for as long as she is able to. In short she's not going anywhere.

The fact is Dench has a 7 film contract starting with GE, meaning B23 is her last contracted film. Who knows what happens next, but due to her age, I doubt she'll do more films after that. She will not be credible as M when pushing 85 years of age. This isn't like Llewelyn playing Q at nearly 90 years of age.... we're talking about the head of the British foreign espionnage !!

Can you give me a link, I've never heard anyone say this before apart from members of the forum.

Llewelyn was actually 85 in his last film.

Of course and I understand your point. All I'm saying is this 7-film contract if true, seems irrelevant when both Dench and EON want to continue with her M.

If she stays only in her office, why not... If she travels on the field again, no thanks. But I don't see how more longer she can be M... I don't find a 80+ years old head of MI6 credible.

For me that's the case with an actor playing M, not just Dench.
Frankly she is past her sell date since DAD, and she has firmly set Craig's first 2 film to the abyss of Movie-Land.
There are bigger problems in his two films than Dench in my opinion, at least her use was justified with it being the start of Bond's career as a 00 Agent.

Let's see what happens now. Bond 23 as far as we know is being looked at as a fresh start by EON.
I hope Craig can have a couple of films without Dench, or his era will be worse than anything ever imagined. Frankly I am almost done with the franchise until Craig leaves. I can't take any more rubbish.
I don't think having Dench in Craig's film will make them "worse than anything ever imagined" for many people, me included. His films are far better than Brosnan's, which also had Dench, if only for one reason: Daniel Craig.

You have to understand, Samuel, that a head of MI6 over 80 years of age is pushing it, even for Bond...

I do understand. Futher up I even said, "Of course and I understand your point." in reply to "we're talking about the head of the British foreign espionnage !!". But what does this point have to do with and how does it relate with your other arguments and my replys? What are you saying, you think all these things you do becuase you don't like Dench and thinks she's too old? So what, she's too old now!
