James Bond on Blu-ray/4K

My assumption now is that when BOND 26 comes out that’s when they finally release 1-20 on 4K discs. I base that off the fact of Eon reissuing home media releases every time a new film comes out. The first set of 4K discs for Craig’s first four films came out on July 2020. Had NTTD came out as originally scheduled on April of that year, the home video release of that film would have likely been a part of that set as well.

Given that the films seem to be on a hiatus, we’ll probably have to wait for awhile, probably won’t see them until 2027.

In 2027 there will be no physical media. It would be foolish to wait so long.

I’d be shocked if all physical media disappeared in 3 years. Maybe the end of it being in big-name stores, but online will still carry a very long time and there’ll always be a few dedicated stores to vintage media. I’d agree 4K is the last physical media format probably, but it’s still got plenty of juice left.

No physical media in 2027? Yeah, that's simply not true in the slightest.

I don't know, the scores to Moonraker et al were set to be released in 2019 but Eon apparently wanted all the focus on the new film, so I wonder if we'd actually be less likely to see the old ones released when there's a new film out next time.

Fact is that there are hardly any Blu-ray players left to buy. Almost all of the major producers which stood for quality about 15 years ago are gone (no, I'm not knocking Sony here who are still around. And it has something to do with Pioneer and Onkyo and some others simply going bankrupt, and not limited to their BD players). But the range of selection has diminished dramatically. There is nobody really left besides Sony, Panasonic and LG, all others have ceased selling players.

Just like e.g. the soundtrack for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is not available on CD (except for an overpriced initial run pressing long sold out), the same will happen to movies. Don't count on some classic you have been missing so far becoming available on disc any more. The monopolists want you to buy a streaming subscription - the problem being that there is no really universal option, but you have to spread your money among several sources. And I'm not ready to do that.

I definitely understand the reasons behind the slow crippling of physical media and the ushering in of a new streaming landscape, but more and more folks are catching on to streaming being just a pricier version of cable too. If something like vinyls are having some of their best sales in decades in recent years, there's no way that physical media will be dead and gone anytime soon, let alone in just three short years.

In high school (about a decade and a half ago), we made a bet that newspapers would be gone by the end of the 2010s. I lost that bet. If physical newspapers are still around (although they are getting smaller) I'm willing to bet that physical media is in one shape or another, going to be around for awhile. I think EON will always want that for Bond.

Pretty much every major film released in theaters still receives a Blu-Ray release. And Blu-Rays of older films are still being continually released by the Warner Archive, Kino Lorber, Arrow, Indicator, VCI, Flicker Alley, Imprint, Criterion, etc. I don't think the format is going anywhere. Sales will never return to pre-streaming levels but there's enough demand to keep Blu-Rays viable, and lowered production costs have made it possible to cater to niche audiences. You don't even need to be a large company to produce Blu-Rays--I've contributed to several projects on Kickstarter that produced professional-level discs.

Even Disney, who’d probably rather do away with discs altogether to strengthen their streaming service, knows there’s still profit in disc sales which is why they cut a deal with Sony to handle the marketing/distribution of physical media.

Even when they stop selling Blu-rays I'll still be able to burn them, right? Am I right?

Didn’t they stop selling in Australia? Or is that where the Sony deal is?

    Fingers crossed!
To be honest I find HDR to be more of a boon than the actual res increase of 4K, but that still means I’d look forward to them.

Why wait when the market is declining?

Damn, NSNA to be included as well? I might have to actually get these if the upgrades are worth it (looking at you, mediocre Craig 4K collection).

If EON was personally going to include NSNA, it be like IFP including Carte Blanche in a Ian Fleming novel collection.

No, if they call It "Connery's James Bond". It's not going to happen anyway.

"...the big news today is that Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment has apparently conducted another of its “A-List” Community surveys asking which of its many catalog titles fans would like to see the studio release in 4K Ultra HD."

"According to many sources, Warner’s A-List 4K poll included the following possibilities...

    Them! (1954)
    Forbidden Planet (1956)
    .
    .
    .
    Bond 6-Film Collection (Sean Connery)"

That said, we'll just have to wait and see.

If true, then NSNA clearly won't be included, so they jumped on the gun on that picture (or assumed wrongfully it was an official installment that'd be added in). Time will tell.

The poster did say NSNA was a mistake on the image, will be a 6 disc set. Someone else in the comments also said October, but who knows. James Bond Day??

@Creasy47 and @Junglist_1985 : Several companies appear to be announcing their Fall 2024 offerings now (i.e., Criterion, Kino Lorber) so (hopefully) fingers crossed.

Criterion announces their lineup three months in advance (almost always, unless it falls on a weekend) on the 15th of every month, so admittedly that's the usual routine from them.

Thanks @Creasy47. Criterion is actually trending on twitter after today's announcement of Fall releases. And after seeing a list of the titles, my wallet has gone into hiding (i.e., Scarface, Seven Samurai, Shape Of Water, Godzilla, Funny Girl, etc...). :D

It is a pretty solid month, I'll give them that. I've no idea who they're marketing that CC40 collection for, but Paper Moon and A Shape of Water are both very intriguing.

Looks like an excellent selection, although ashamedly I haven’t seen many of those titles. I already have the standard 4K for Shape of Water, but I’m tempted to double dip just for the Criterion label because it’s one of my absolute most beloved movies.

I think if EON had full control over the box set, they'd add OHMSS before NASA.

As far as I know, Eon does have control over the box sets. They’re the reason why the box sets before 2012 used to be randomized volume sets rather than actor sets. It was quite a big deal when the actor sets finally happened. Even Lazenby got a “set” lol.

Bond movies have consistently had improved quality over each new medium release... the blu rays were/are glorious. But, I have been disappointed by a lot of 4k releases of old movies... the grain is ridiculous. It is not what they looked like when they were released like a lot of people claim. Some of my old black and white movies, it's grain to the point of fuzzy "moving" faces/images. It's terrible.

Hell, I didn't even like my favorite Craig Bonds on 4K. Watching CR and QoS on blu-ray is an infinitely better looking experience than the darker 4K variants.
