  • I agree with @Murdock.

The great thing about underwater scenes in general is that everything gets slowed down. You can't do fast action scenes with loads of split second shots... it makes for great tension.

While I love FYEO, the underwater battle aboard the sunk ship is hilariously slow. You can go grab a snack in your kitchen before the bad guy finishes to throw a punch. :))

FYEO's are the most tedious underwater scenes in the franchise (only TND comes even close). Worst are the faux underwater bits featuring Carole Bouquet.

Have to agree with you guys; for me the underwater scenes in FYEO is the film's biggest weakness. You could say it helps by slowing down the pace a little, but I just couldn't get into them. Some of TB's underwater scenes dragged for me too, but this was definitely the main issue with FYEO for me. Still love the film; Bibi and the underwater scenes are the two bad things that stand out.

But TND's was mainly a discovery scene, not an action scene- just a brief escape at the end.
LTK was the only Bond movie to do underwater exciting. =D>

I agree about LTK; to me it's one of the most exciting Bond films throughout the whole thing, and the underwater scenes in it didn't bore me.

I agree that sometimes it's not done very well, but LTK has great underwater scenes and I love the part in TB when they're stealing those bombs and cover up the aircraft.

Obviously I disagree about LTK being the only Bond film to do them exciting (I find Thunderball's underwater sequences gorgeously shot and very thrilling, in the pool as well as the ocean).

Aside from Conti's opening cue the FYEO underwater set piece does absolutely nothing for me.

THUNDERBALL has the more exciting underwater scenes, by far. Aside form that, LICENCE TO KILL's underwater pieces were very good. Those are all of the undersea Bonds I've ever cared for.
I meant that all of the underwater stuff in LTK was exciting. TB's underwater scenes were a mix of really thrilling (the combat) and yawn-inducing (the Vulcan securing & bomb removal).

I love the Vulcan securing. It's a grand bit of cinema accompanied by an evocative cue from Barry. Thunderball is one of the most "epic" Bond films, so I feel as though the recovery and securing of the bombs is an important sequence and really highlights the grandeur of it all.

Nice to see I'm not alone in adoration of Thunderball's action scenes.

    Yes, the action was great.
As to questionable stuff, the parachuting in QOS was severely questionable, but I can deal. It's the best Bond film of this Century so far IMO. I can easily cut it some slack.

As for Thunderball's underwater sequences, I do enjoy them to an extent. I particularly like the shot of the Marines parachuting into the water and then swimming towards the convoy. I feel that Thunderball is just a little bit too long as a film- do we really need to see every last inch of the operation being put into place- every last nail being hit into the tarpaulin?

As mentioned, the LTK's underwater scenes are very good. Nothing to complain about in that regard.

And for FYEO's underwater scene- I really dig it. Great score, tense (especially when Melina's suit is breached) and some nice visuals. It's not my favourite action scene from FYEO, but I do enjoy it nonetheless.

I think that my favourite underwater scene from a Bond film, although short, is TSWLM's Lotus battle against Stromberg's mini subs. Love the Bond77 cue that accompanies it, love the visuals and I like how the scene feels kinetic, despite it being underwater.
