Is this played anymore. Unfortunately, it seems to be dying.

I don't know much about the subject so hopefully others can chime in, but I understand it's mostly played in private rooms for huge money these days.
Would be neat to learn more on this topic!

Sounds like you got a good story out of it at least! I've found Blackjack is one of the best games of you want to prolong your money in the casino.
EDIT: not sure of there's a gambling thread but this discussion would probably be best there. If there isn't, maybe this should be it

when discussing card games and Bond am I the only person who felt that he should of played Black Jack in Goldeneye not Baccarat. after LTK Baccarat felt forced.

I think it has to be texas holdem for sure in the Craig era!

Baccarat I think has an air of mystery around it that's not necessarily present in Black Jack (maybe just because a lot of people don't know for sure how it works or something) that aligns well with Bond, even in the more modern era of Brosnan.

Ya I had no idea what they were doing in Baccarat and looked it up and how to play it and I was disappointed its a simple game that is 100% luck and no skill.Im so glad they used texas hold'em in Casino Royale works better for bond gives him a chance to out play and out think his opponent.

Chemin de Fer is a bit more than luck (a bit of strategy sometimes..)

Although I feel the same. Texas Hold 'Em works better in this age. I feel like more people get it.

Chemin de fer and Baccarat are not exactly the same, though I can't exactly remember what is the difference. I think the rules are basically the same but one tends to be faster than the other (sorry, it's been years since I looked it up). It is still played in the so-called traditional games room (salon privé) of casinos. Funny enough, I was just looking for it and found that it can also be called Macau according to the website of Casino Estoril (for those unaware, look for the connection to Fleming/CR), along with a nice description. I disagree that it is just luck and no skill @Problem_Eliminator. It requires attention and a good knowledge of the (simple) rules and of chance (in a statistical perspective).

From what I heard, in Baccarat, the bank is held by one player only. In Chemin de Fer, it passes from player to player. In OHMSS (the movie), Bond plays Chemin de Fer in the casino, and holds the bank for a while.

Baccarat is the most popular game by far in Macau, which does 6 times the gambling revenue of Vegas. So it's not dying. It is 100% luck though.

EDIT: Chemin de fer (the game they play in the films) isn't 100% luck, but pretty close to it.

I may venture down to Macau this weekend (one of my rare Saturday's off). My primary game is poker, but baccarat is much more readily available (and honestly a safer bet if you've been drinking) so I might plop down a bet if I go.

No, my reading tells me it's not played very much if at all now, hence the change to Texas Hold 'Em Poker in the 2006 film version of Casino Royale.

The change to holdem was because of the massive explosion in popularity of holdem starting in 2003 because of amateur Chris Moneymaker winning the WSOP main event.

Possibly also because poker is a game of skill and baccarat isn't.
