There is very little to NO chance that delays on The Rhythm Section will affect Bond 25. It's a non-issue.

As for updates (or lack thereof), I think we're suffering from some amnesia. There was little known at this stage, for what was then "Bond 24," either. From December 2013 to February 2014, this was all there was, really:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/01/17/james-bond-writer-john-logan-intends-bond-24-and-25-to-build-on-what-they-did-in-skyfall (in retrospect, this ius a fascinating read and gives credence to the idea that Spectre was supposed to be two films.)

    https://www.007.info/miss-moneypenny-interviewed-in-total-film/

Gary Barber announced in November 2012 that Logan was writing Bond 24 and 25 (after Barbara Broccoli denied it). Mendes said in a 2014 interview (with the now-disgraced Charlie Rose) the original plan was for a two-part story but that came undone.
This leads me to conclude that we should perhaps take everything said with a grain of salt until there are official announcements. This is why I am prioritizing MGM in the scheme of things. When they officially announce, then it's a go. Apart from them, Baz seems to be the best source for accurate information ahead of time.

Does that include Craig's announcement on the Colbert show? I think Brosnan took some photos with a contract in 86, and that never came to be. In fact both Brosnan and Dalton finished work on their last Bond film fully expecting to do another.

Eon also put out a release at the time.

    http://www.007.com/daniel-craig-return-james-bond/

I'm not saying he didn't have the backing of EON, but as many stated at the time they would need a distributor locked in before preproduction on Bond 25 could commence. It appears as if Craig is more giving his assurance with his public statement, rather than they are actually getting underway.
Wishful thinking, mate. Craig is 100% locked in.

Have you got any links to that interview?

Interview was in April 2014. I had a link but it no longer works. But I just searched the site, and I believe I found another one. Go to 17:06 mark.

    Ah. Point taken.
  • Color me skeptical about the progress until the distribution *and financing* is settled. Eon doesn't finance the movies.

Maybe something is really set behind the scenes. At the same time, stop and look over the past year. 20th Century Fox was reported to be in the hunt to distribute Bond 25. Murdoch opted to sell the studio to Disney. Sony was reported to be in the hunt. But Sony Corp.'s CEO is retiring and there's renewed talk the company might sell off its movie and television business.

Annapurna and MGM formed their joint venture for distributing, but Bond 25 wasn't part of the deal. Deadline reported last fall the joint venture was moving toward getting the domestic releasing for Bond 25, but nothing has happened since.

And, again, I remember all the theories on this very thread about how a big announcement was coming on Global James Bond Day. All we got was a 10 percent off T-Shirt sale.

Once of these days something has got to happen. If they're serious about a November 2019 release date, you'd think it would be soon. But until real information surfaces, I have trouble believing a complete cast and crew is ready to spring into action.
  • In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Denis Villenueve has distanced himself from the possibility of directing a large-budgeted, arthouse film again. He refers to his Blade Runner film as a ‘monster’. Is this a sign that his Dune film could be on ice? He had previously made comments that suggested the film hadn’t been greenlit.
If Denis wants to make another ambitious arty sci-fi film, he really needs a hit under his belt. Bond would be a guaranteed hit.

In the interview he expressly states that: “One day I would love to do one, but it’s a question of timing... I think what Martin Campbell did with Casino Royale was impressive”

He's very keen to do Dune. He's not doing Bond 25, he's, in his own words 'engaged' - lol.

i do believe him, but he would have to say stuff like this even if he were hired already for Bond 25, just to misdirect the press.

And in regards to the press, it's quite pitiful how they tried to make it look like he "dissed" star wars with that statement, just to start something.

He's not hired to do Bond 25, he will never be hired to do Bond 25,
is appointed to direct Bond 25.

Somehow I think this could be interpreted in a completely different manner from the obvious.

It's a bit of tongue in cheek humour (perhaps missed), to reflect my opinion that some of the recent Bond films are more large budget 'arthouse' than previous efforts. Dune is his baby. I doubt he'll relinquish it for Bond.

I remember back in the day the first time we heard about a new film was when we saw a trailer in the cinema.

    Maybe those were better days.

If at all Dune will be even more large budget arthouse than Bond, especially because it´s his baby.

Villeneuve's statements sound as though he's trying to throw the press off the story without flat-out saying, "NO, I am NOT directing Bond 25."

I have a sense, he's doing it, knows he can't divulge that info, knows he also doesn't want to be called a liar later on.

I lived those days. There was a little more to it than that. You'd see a small item on the entertainment pages. During the buildup to The Spy Who Loved Me, the newspaper in my area dropped in a publicity still of Barbara Bach standing back to back with Richard Kiel. There was a caption, but nothing else. It whetted your appetite.

But, in general, you had to be alert and search out little stories that'd pop up. The late gossip columnist Liz Smith would have a short item. I think Eon, in those days, did try to keep interest built up. But they didn't have the tools they have today.

~13 months till a teaser trailer. That doesn’t actually sound that bad

The title of Horowitz's new Bond title is being revealed on Thursday. It will be out later this year. Something for Bond fans to occupy themselves with in the interim.

Does anyone know when the MGM results call is? Presumably we will have details on that call, if they plan on proceeding shortly.

Probably in early March, but I don't know the specific date. In previous years, the fourth-quarter and year-end financial results call have been in early March of the following year, roughly the first week or so.

Great. Do you think this is when they finally give us the information we've been waiting for (distributor)? It has to be, no?

The new Bond title is Forever and A Day, which ironically is how long we've been waiting for news of the director and distributor for Bond 25. Let the countdown begin for websites to start claiming the new movie will be using this title, too...

Or for someone at Ian Fleming Publications to say, "The book has been sent to Eon."

Hard to say. Sometimes MGM drops some Bond news on these calls (hiring John Logan in November 2012, saying it might be relaxing its original post-bankruptcy plans to get the Bond movies back on an every-other-year schedule, to later saying Bond would be coming out on a 3- or 4-year schedule).

But other times they hardly mention Bond at all. I remember one call they talked a lot about Steve Harvey and nothing about Bond. Also, over the years, the investors went from asking a fair number of questions to sometimes not asking questions at all.

Thanks. I see. It's just that I would assume they would announce a foreign (and domestic) distributor once they have it locked down (I can't see any reason not to mention it from an investor perspective). Given the tight timing, I'm assuming it should be at the next call, or else we may have an unexpected delay.

In my time being a Bond fan, this wait is the worst yet between two Bond films. But I did miss the gap between LTK and GE - still the worst statistically.
