Whilst mentioned in the SPECTRE promotion I could have sworn the falling out between them was for Skyfall instead as both Craig and Mendes had said there was some initial difficulties in them finding a way to work together despite their friendship.
With regards to this news, it is saddening. After seeing Fallout last night I appreciated that Bond 25 would be unlikely to top it as an action movie but would at least have Boyle's contribution as the film's USP.
I'm not yet inclined to think the artistic differences will be over the script but more so a difference of opinion with Boyle's own methodology in film making. I appreciate a lot here feel that EON are a spent creative force but they still clearly know best about the logistics of actually putting a Bond film together.
The script was always the problem with SPECTRE - a lot of blame is placed on Mendes but I have never imagined that Mendes would have been likely to be happy with what he had to shoot with.
There's too much riding on this with the new deal for EON not to have a contingency plan and there must be a couple of attainable directors they already had in mind even if the eventual appointee may forever be saddled with the label of 'second choice' if the film proves a dud.
Problem just arose that Eon only now caught on that it was a parody and Boyle didn't want to make that at all. He showed them his real script. They said ... but... but ... you said "let's shock 'em!" and we said okay ...
Alas, we can come up with 1,001 tales for reasons "why" while we wait. ;)

At this stage I don’t think BB, MGW and DC didn’t like the script. They would’ve known way earlier if they didn’t like it.
100% on board
I'm guessing the film will be delayed another year, the Hodge script abandoned, and Craig will eventually walk.
Yes, I can't see the script - which they've had for months - being a problem. Boyle has now been free to start the pre-production and differences in approach have arisen.
We may yet have dodged a bullet. If this had to happen, much better it happened now than bring the production into complete disarray.
This is because this is business as usual for them. The director is gone, but everything else is in place. They've already spent a lot of money on the script, casting director and staff, locations; they've got permits to shoot in certain places... It's business as usual.
And, I still think they will go with Hodge's script. That is, until Mendes or a safe director is hired.
If that happens, the locations, casting and script get canned; they go back to the P&W script. Delay by three to four months to polish that script, and get back on the horse.
Keep an eye on the director. If he's edgy-- and that includes Demange-- I see a polished Hodge script (with a writer/writers to "up" the action); if it's a Mendes-type, I can see a u-turn back to P&W...
I hope we don't get a much less exciting choice now.
I can't believe it's the script since they started crewing and casting... so the story seems sound... It's something in how Boyle was going to execute this story that scared EoN...
So for everyone thinks that a delay will happen, just stop it won't. The only way there will be a delay is if Craig drops out.
Campbell is not on their radar...
You raise an interesting point. Which director worth his/her salt would want to be seen as 2nd choice? Normally in these instances, the replacement gets saddled with the blame if the film doesn't live up to expectations, and we all know that the press can be ruthless and will go on and on about what could have been with poster boy Boyle. It really doesn't bode well from a marketing standpoint if they just replace the director and move forward with the old script as a result. They may be forced to try a different approach just in order to have a better marketing spin for the release.
Either that or they need a big enough name to compensate for Boyle's departure, even with one of the old scripts. I can only think of Mendes at this point, due to his recent familiarity with all things Bond, but it will mean a delay.
It's possible but doubtful. I hope not at least. They won't be able to do it, at least based on the evidence of the past 20 years.
I certainly hope so. They seemed to be on that new trajectory (Demange, Mackenzie etc.) until Craig agreed to come back, so may go in that direction with B26.
It's what Bond needs imho, but I'm not sure it's what Craig wants. That's not his game, and I'm not convinced he can credibly deliver that. So I'd rather he not try.
https://screenrant.com/bond-25-director-christopher-mcquarrie-rumors/
The man cut his chops as a writer before director (which would help in quickly shaping a script that he will direct)... I wouldn't bet against McQuarrie being the first Yank director-- although still a long shot.
He's my top choice
If he can do for Bond what he did with Mission Impossible then i'd be all for it
Desperate times, desperate measures. ;)
