Never heard of this Director. He is good? What can we expect from him?

He's supremely good. Just watch True Detective Series 1. Very stylish, intelligent, utterly compelling, fantastic performances, and great visuals and mood. Expect the same re: Bond 25. Personally I think he's a much better fit than Boyle. Things work out for a reason.

February 2020 release date?? I would rather they push it 3 extra months for a May release date

There's a Marvel film out the first week of May and Godzilla vs Kong is out smack bang in the middle of the same month. Bond is better off in February, financially. There's no competition there yet.

    Finally, american director.

    U-S-A! U-S-A! :x

Is he the first ever American director?

    Hmmm..

Not sure what to think of this.

I'm really gutted that we got to this..I really wanted Boyle to be the director and that the movie had to find a new director :(

I hope the movie turns out fine but....a release date is moved...and it's in February?

How many Bond movies were released this early? Is this the earliest a Bond movie is released? Idk, it feels like it's too early in a year to get properly hyped haha

Oh well, this is the new trend in Hollywood, early release dates.

Fukunaga has a new series on Netflix dropping tomorrow called Maniac. Maybe I should check that out.

I'm fairly certain this isn't going to be just a simple old-fashioned 'Bond on a mission' film. It will bring something new and different, but in what way, remains to be seen.
It sure seems that way. Intriguing, but not in a traditionally commercial way. That's what I find most interesting about this.

I can't predict what's going to happen, but I wouldn't be surprised if, for example, the film depicts an older Bond with some sort of psychological issues.
  • Noticing that some folks are not sure about the new director because Lee Tamahori also butted heads with the producers over dragging on the ice hotel car chase scene between Bond and Yao on the set of DAD and we all saw how that turned out!

The long form of TV has become so good over recent years it leaves me finding most films lacking. The length of a feature film increasingly seems to short to do anything really satisfying.

True Detectives was better than 90% of what I've seen in the cinema over the past couple of years. But he had hours to tell that story, will all its slow burning tension.

Mendes approach was to make his films incredibly long, but you can't compete with TV in that way. A hour 2.5 hr movie does not automatically mean compelling character arcs or growing tension - anything but quite often.

EON need to get back to what works about film as opposed to TV and make sure they bring all that to the fore.

The film needs a simple but compelling story in my opinion. Something we've not had in a long while.

It's possible. I think this was rumoured somewhere a while back too, for what that's worth.

Just heard the news online, Eon must be protecting the character so it's probably for the best getting rid of Boyle. Unfortunately it means more delays

Not necessarily. I wouldn't be surprised to see a new director within the next 6 weeks. There had to have been more directors that EON was after.

Called it. Minus the delay part. But im still unsure that if they start in March then why they felt that they couldn't keep the 2019 date.
  • Ok. That's really, really positive news. Very happy with choice of director. His work on True Detective was superb. Must now check out Maniac on Netflix. Plus only a 3 month delay! YIPPPEEE!!!

Let’s just hope it’s not a personal revenge story again.

Never seen any of True Detective but I hear that season one is excellent.

Good lord, a Bond flick in February. Has history been made?! :)

Ok. I just worry because February is such a weird month to release big movies

BTW, wish he was in Bond25, in retrospect it couldn't have been true at that time, right?

And we would also have a great them song. Country Roads.

I think you'll like it @Bounine, given you're a fan of Twin Peaks. It's got that similar weirdness going on.

Is Craig still Bond though? Isn’t it odd that in this announcement they didn’t state it will be Craig’s last Bond film? I thought they specified that in the Boyle announcement.

Given the fact that the "official" working placeholder was Shatterhand, do you guys think we're going to get a direct sequel of Spectre (with all the gang plus Blofeld back to take the Craig era full circle), a more standalone adventure (with maybe only the MI6 team back with less screen time) or a 100% standalone with any link to the previous films?

"Michael G. Wilson, Barbara Broccoli and Daniel Craig announced today that Bond 25 will begin filming at Pinewood Studios on 4 March 2019 under the helm of director, Cary Joji Fukunaga with a worldwide release date of 14 February 2020.
“We are delighted to be working with Cary. His versatility and innovation make him an excellent choice for our next James Bond adventure,” said Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli."

The official announcement is by Barbara, Michael and Craig. I think it's pretty clear what that means.

Actually it dawned on me the first American director for James Bond was actually

William H. Brown Jr. (Whom I am guessing was American) as he directed Casino Royale 1954

Irvin Kershner Directed Never say Never Again

So we have had American directors before true not in the official series but hey I have been championing a change up for a long time

So with that history lesson out of the way

    1. I am annoyed about the delay as is everyone else but I have so much to look forward to I am sure the time will pass quick

    2. I am interested in what an American can bring to the official series and I am curious if locations might be changed now due to it

    3. I am hoping this means a new Title nothing against Shatterhand and heck they can use it for Bond 26 or 27 or really any other film in all honest it’s been far too many one word S titles I mean imagine if after the success of The spy who loved me the did The Spy who murdered me and then it was rumors. He next film would be The spy who stole from me I mean eventually people would get bored and between two one word S titles for the films that aweful book Solo and the equally bad titles 007 Legends I am hoping for a better title I guess we will find out in March which kind of upsets me as to be honest the announcement of Spectre was a special moment between me and my wife (we still make fun of the announcer as he does not excite Bond fans across the globe)

All in all good news and I have plenty to keep my busy till then

Did anybody notice the 'worldwide' release date in the announcement? It appears as though the staggered releases are finally over, if I'm reading that correctly. If so, I'm extremely grateful and we can all see it at the same time.
  • So Universal have 2 Blockbusters within 2 Months (Bond 25, Fast 9)

Cary is a pretty dapper guy. He's also pretty handsome. He could play Bond

    cary-fukunaga-attends-the-world-premiere-of-the-new-netflix-series-picture-id1032891456?s=612x612

He's a very interesting choice and Peter Bradshaw, the Guardian's critic, has some interesting observations:
    https://www.theguardian.com/film/2018/sep/20/cary-fukunaga-james-bond-director-007-true-detective

What's interesting is that after Boyle's replacement, you'd think they'd go for a staid and steady hand. However, Fukunga is probably more edgy and irreverent. Either he has a great take on thescript or Eon are intent on having a rocky production.

    Still an excellent pick.
  • Do you think that by the worldwide release date, February 14th (Valentine's Day). the title for BOND 25 will be "Property Of A Lady"? I think it's the title that is adjusted for that date.

Hopefully we're not getting another 'dark' and 'moody' Bond film, but the choice of director suggests otherwise unfortunately...

Yep. Don't expect a light touch.
