John Glen thoughts about Cary Fukunaga as Bond 25 director.

Killing off the character would be silly. Suggesting a 007 death leaving the audience with the doubt would be even sillier. They'll never do it.

On the other hand i would be all in for a Fleming finale in the vein of YOLT, with Bond presumed dead by his team while living in some remote places not knowing who he really is.

Killing off Bond is as stupid an idea as Brofeld.

The YOLT ending would be a fantastic way to send off Craig’s Bond—just as I’ve always thought it would have made a fantastic ending for Fleming’s novels. Bond is missing, presumed dead. He has amnesia and is being held a willing captive by some girl pregnant with his child in some remote part of the world. Then he discovers something that makes him slowly recall a part of who is, and without truly remembering anything of his past or profession, he heads off, directly into the clutches of some great and terrible enemy to rediscover who he really is. How perfectly Bondian. How truly Fleming. And it would go along with this whole theme they’ve been working on with Bond becoming Bond, etc. Then they can start wherever they want with the next guy. Sounds like something this Fukunaga guy would go in for at least.

    This.

Exactly my thoughts. It would be fantastic.

Well, this looks exactly like someone is trying to copy the filmaking style by the genius Terrence Malick.

You guys are bringing up Kubrick here and whatnot. What does any of this have to do with Bond? As long as Bond punches everything in sight we’ll get a great film. I say Sly Stallone should direct!

    Because ;)

Bonus link about Nolan linking some of his films to Bond, quite cool

@Birdleson what if it’s ambiguous death?

You mean ambiguous to the outside world like in Fleming's YOLT? That would be fine. Ambiguous for us, the audience? No.

    Ambiguous means FRWL.

A cliffhanger ending in the spirit of Fleming's example. Not a re-filming of From Russia With Love.

What I found most interesting about the announcement of Fukunaga's appointment, apart from the coordinated worldwide release date, is this bit:

"His versatility and innovation make him an excellent choice for our next James Bond adventure."

This is in sync with what Boyle said when recently asked about what happened. He commented on the film makers wanting something fresh. Whether that is freshness in the script or in the directorial approach and vision, we shall see. One suspects it's a little bit of both.

Those words were carefully chosen I'm sure, and suggest we're in for something rather different from the norm in 2020.

Did Boyle ever comment on the situation? If he did I must've missed it.

True. Still, Boyle was probably goin to make something even more "different" and unusual. I'm very excited about B25. I just hope some recurring cast members will come back (especially Fiennes).

He made some comments a few days before the announcement that he had quit as follows:

In an interview with Radio Times five days before it was announced Boyle had pulled out over ‘creative differences’, the director said Bond aficionados would be ‘hampered’ by how much they knew about the plot

‘Like everyone else, I saw the films, but I’d already read the books so I had a different relationship with the characters.

‘Although I think it’d be impossible for a Bond aficionado to write or direct a Bond film.

‘You’d be hampered by how much you knew. They want you to bring a freshness to it.’

I'm quite curious about this Fukunaga chap, who seems quite charismatic and interesting, but personally would rather see very limited time for the Scooby gang.

You're welcome @jake24. The 'freshness' comment by Boyle and the 'innovation' remark in the announcement have me thinking that we could be in for something unexpected. That's perhaps a good thing. It's possible that they could shake things up in a few ways this time.

I'd be happy if we went bare bones with this one. Maybe a bit of Felix, and less of M, and no other recurring characters. And nothing that "ties it all together" or any indication that this is an ending. Just a great Bond film on a normal mission, ending with him ready for the next.

Hear, hear! Give us a stripped-down adventure. We don't need all of that. I would take M, maybe Felix, and no one else...in a second.

"I have no armor left. You stripped it from me. Whatever is left of me... Whatever is left of me, whatever I am...I'm yours."

I wonder, given Fukunaga's past stylings, if we will get Vesper in a flashback, or a dream. As much as I have mixed feelings about that, and wish SP hadn't featured her, you kind of have to begin and end Craig's era with Vesper. She's his Tracy.

What if they blend YOLT's garden of death (which I absolutely love the concept) with a FRWL (book) type ending where the film would have him fade out due to some exotic plant poisoning? If they used Blofeld as the villain, they could show him back in control, allowing Bond26 to take off from there.

I wouldn't mind a low key entry. Maybe along the lines of DR NO.

I also love it as well. I want the film to go that way. I say end it there in Bond 25, and reboot with a new actor.

Being a fan of True Detective and BONN, and now watching Maniac-- I think it's safe to say we're in for a treat. Great acting (Gabriel Byrne, where have you been, my wonderful Irish actor! It's been too long, and you should have been THE SHADOW (although Baldwin did do a great job)).

Fukunaga is the most exciting director to be announced to the Bond franchise since...

    ??

He's a visionary. A very confident and masculine voice.

He will bring the grit back to DC's Bond-- where it deserves to be.

And @echo, you're so correct: we don't need the superfluous characters of MP and Q in DC's timeline. They were doing dandy without them in CR and QOS. And I can't see someone like Fukunaga being enamoured by these characters and their function-- especially in SP...

My guess is this is stripped back Bond.

Especially with this report of a FRWL type of film...

But OMG-- watch this man's work. Pronto.

If they go into YOLT territory and DON’T use the novel’s ending that would probably be the most disappointing thing ever.

Ha! Loving Ep 2 of MANIAC... and did Fukunaga poke fun at TDs with a jab at Spinoza?? Especially as this is shaping up to be a romantic thriller...?

(shoot down at will, but Fukunaga is visually and philosophically one deep dude).

I could see a scenario where, if we're destined for a YOLT-inspired ending, there's a glimpse of Vesper as Craig starts to recover his memory.

I feel like Eon learned their (box office) lesson from OHMSS by the time of CR and won't give us a total downer but instead a moment of triumph for Bond.

This is why I'm happy to see Bond every 3 to 4 years. 5 is really pushing it though. I think 3 years is absolutely ideal. I think if EoN solely concentrated on Bond we'd be in a much better position.

If Feb 14 is the global release date the premiere will be at least two weeks before that, one week at most. This is to not only fit an international press tour beginning in London, but also the whole adage of the closer to a film's release press cab publish reviews = the less confident the studio is in the film. Only reason the Skyfall and Spectre premieres were so close to their respecting UK release date is because the US one was so far away already.

I recall in some early interview Craig said FRWL is his favourite Bond film, so this news that he wants to tap into that style of film/book/story is, for me, very good news. This may also explain where the Bond will appear to die rumour has stemmed from. Love the end of the book and think something like that could be a bold and unforgettable ending for Craig. And they have the right director to pull that off.

So uh, Mr Cary Fukunaga, please incorporate this very track into the opening sequence when Bond strolls through a classic train, riding through the mountains of Swiss, 'looking for something'. Back to the good old days. You're welcome.

McConaghey would make an excellent villain. Good suggestion. Although I do like my Euro villains best
