Quite. I certainly wouldn't miss him.

Me neither. One less on the Scooby gang. Now for the others...

Still wish it was Danny Boyle directing.

I was always lukewarm on him even going as far back as 2010 when he was first rumored but now after everything sorry I feel we dodged a bullet personally I think Cary is going to do America proud and show you brits that is Yanks can direct 007, and keep it british.

This ambiguous quote from Layton could go either way, exciting or concerning.

“ "I think it's time for a re-invention. It's time to modernize that franchise in an interesting way.“

I think we dodged the bullet there. I am incredibly sick to death of hearing that Bond needs reinvention and modernization. That to me says Bond is worthless s**t as a franchise and character, not worthy of today's times. Good riddance to Bart.

    This comment was interesting, too:

"Also, I feel like I want to come in at the beginning."

My read on it is that Layton would have jumped at the chance to direct the film had Craig dropped out.

Or it could also mean getting in on the ground floor with the story. I’m convinced that the final shooting script for 25 will have DNA from other drafts that were developed over the last eighteen months.

Hm, I read it to mean that he doesn´t want to be a replacement for another director. But at least in Connection with what he says About re-invention you could of Course be spot-on. In that case however, I am a Tiny bit worried. Since Craig started the Franchise has been re-invented more or less with every consecutive film, so what more does he want to re-invent?
I could however support the follow-up sentence, "it´s time to modernize that Franchise in an interesting way", if the emphasis is put on the last four words.

I read it that way as well.

I’m not entirely sure how to take Layton’s comments. Modernize in an interesting way? On one hand, it could mean a cool reinvention like how CR was, or it could also mean changing the series in too drastic a way that might stray too far from what James Bond is. We will see if he gets the chance with Bond 26, whatever it is he wants to do...

Bond was modernized enough. No need to “modernize” him more.

Definitely concerning! Whenever I see these young filmmakers talking about modernizing our franchise that to me sets off alarm bells of POLITICAL CORRECTNESS. Too many of these young ones want to make statements with their films and that’s simply not what Bond is about. Bond is about grand escapist entertainment, not about making social statements or being progressive. Bond is a sexist misogynistic dinosaur. End of story. He’s also a white straight male. Let’s not forget that.

I think the next arrogant phony director who proudly claims to have turned down Bond because 007 is an outdated character (who needs modernization) deserves a trip to the Krest Warehouse. After being mauled by a Carcharodon carcharias, a trip to Scaramanga's funhouse is in order. If all the Bond fans on this site each chipped in $5 we could raise enough cash ($1 million) to have Francisco Scaramanga personally eliminate the Bond bashing culprit.
  • He just needs to get taken out back to the woodshed for a good old fashioned thrashing. Too many of these modern snowflakes out there acting like prima donnas with their progressive views.

Well said. I'd thoroughly it if B25 ends up being a well done, old school traditional Bond film that gives the finger to these prima donnas and their attitudes toward Bond.

He could have been talking about a soft character reboot, a'la GE (which brought the character into the 90's while also retaining and even emphasizing elements from the past which were ditched during the Dalton years). If I recall correctly, Layton is a fan of TSWLM, which is hardly a PC Bond film.

I just think it's a matter of creative flexibility.

My thoughts exactly. I’m tired of hearing that all the time. If Bond isn’t good enough as he is then these pretentious filmmakers can go screw up some other franchise.

Exactly!. Leave 007 alone and go screw up Superman or something.

I feel Bond is perfect in Casino Royale (2006) and doesn’t need to be changed anymore then that.

Bond will undergo a major change in tone once craig leaves the role after bond 25 I believe but I think we ought to speculate the tone for 25 before we speculate the tone for the next era.
  • I took it to mean that Layton didn't want to come in halfway through the development stage on someone else's film - it's no fun batting clean-up if you take yourself seriously as a director (rather than a 'journeyman').

Here again, I may be biased by my concern and frustration that EON wrong-footed themselves by waiting too long on starting development, pinning down a director, and etc. When the development finally started and they lost Boyle they were then scrambling and whoever we end up with isn't the first choice and hasn't had a proper run-up.

That said, the bit about 'modernizing' Bond could be intriguing (if done right, which has happened in recent memory with GE and CR), or worrying.

Perhaps those directors should try and find pride in directing from an existant script. Isn't that part of every director's professional education? Doesn't mean they can't give the project their own stamp.

I think that each director has made changes to the script as far back as Terence Young and Guy Hamilton @boldfinger. Even the great Peter Hunt threw out Richard Maibaum's earlier scripts of OHMSS for a more faithful adaption of Fleming's novel. He even brought in Simon Raven to write some of the dialogue between Tracy and Blofeld in Piz Gloria, which was to be "sharper, better and more intellectual" he stated, rather than Maibaum's version. Lewis Gilbert brought in Christopher Wood to rewrite and knock-into-shape TSWLM. As soon as Gilbert left after MR, so did Wood. But I get where you're coming from. I think "reinventing Bond" conjures up all kinds of bad coronations, it could end up being just a Bond movie in name only. Rejuvenating is a better verb.

The film has to deliver. If it doesn't then all this will wreak and leave a big stain on craig & eons record

CR was based directly on Fleming's novel. We won't get that again, except for details from this or that novel or short story.

Can we get Mr wint and Mr Kidd type dual henchmen for bond 25?

That's what I thought in this thread I made here :

    https://www.mi6community.com/discussion/8687/the-spangled-mob-for-bond-25#latest

DAF Novel has a lot to offer if they will use it in future films, I want some classic elements to return even for a single shot- bond's royal navy uniform/ bond desk like in OHMSS/ female villian/

@bondsum, those films you Mention are all fantastic films as they are, and I´m happy they turned out this way. On the other Hand, every director throwing out the script or the writer would imply that the Writers know Nothing About their Job, and that doesn´t make sense.

Back to the days of Roger Moore Bond. Gone with the 24 elements.
Where England only be place where Bond can return too.

Bond meet Oberhauser man first in Spectre

On first side subtil element of modern because it something we haven't seen for a whyle. QOS is full with it. Dennis Gassner mabey not return, stil hope some of his and his art directers stil get this kind of influence on Bond 25.
