I so desperately want another Bond movie for 2018 that at this point I don't care who's going to play James Bond.

I don't care who's playing Bond, either. As long as they give us a straightforward Bond film without agenda-driven dramatic changes done to any of the existing characters, I'll be satisfied.

    This.

There is a light hearted zany humour to the Hamilton films which I think Bond could do with a little more of these days.

I agree actually. I mean, look at the Connery era. It started off a bit bizarre, but still quite sinister and serious with DN. Then FRWL added an even darker Hitchcok-ian spy vibe to the series. TB in many ways was an exposition on production design and locations, but S.P.E.C.T.R.E. in that film was still pretty much a sinister organization, in which girls (Paula) simply died in a cruel way.

Then Hamilton truly added that zany feel-good vibe with his films DAF and GF. I absolutely agree on that.

In a way we saw already a bit that 'funny' zany aspect in SP. Much more than in CR, QOS and SF. The latter three films really have that serious Terence Young undertone, whereas SP added some light Hamilton-esque entertainment to the Craig-era.

Now please a bit more of that zany happiness....and better dosed perhaps :-).

It's actually based on this story from a site called AceShowBiz:

    http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/00103612.html

And that story is based on a story in the Page Six feature of the New York Post (Murdoch owned)

    First text of AceShowBix:

headline: Daniel Craig May Return as James Bond.

subhead: Rumor has it, 'Spectre' actor could be convinced to sign up for another 007 movie.

    text:

Daniel Craig may finally be back to play James Bond. Rumor has it, Daniel's latest theater production, "Othello", at New York Theatre Workshop could be the ticket that finally convinces the actor to sign up for another 007 film.

The credits of "Othello" shows that producer Barbara Broccoli, who brought in Daniel in 2006 for the string of hits "Casino Royale", "Quantum of Solace", "Skyfall" and "Spectre", also serves as producer for the play. After Daniel was cast in "Othello" in October, he said he "would miss [Bond] terribly."

A source tells Page Six of "Othello" and Bond, "Daniel thinks of himself as a 'serious actor,' and he wants to stretch his artistic muscles. And Barbara really believes in his talent. For her to do this [play] for him is a gift - of course she wants him back - this is going to entice him to make another Bond movie." The insider says Barbara would ask Daniel back for the upcoming "Bond 25".

Other sources add that Daniel is amenable to a return to the "Bond" film franchise after a hiatus of a few years when he'll tackle "more serious roles."

While Idris Elba, Tom Hiddleston, Michael Fassbender and Jack Huston were previously rumored to replace Daniel as James Bond, a source claims that "all those people are not in the running."

According to the source, making "Othello" has been a shrewd business decision for Barbara. "It's a limited run," says the source, "She's not doing this to lose money."

Text of Page Six/New York post

In a Shakespearean twist, a hot theater production of “Othello” could be the ticket that finally convinces fickle star Daniel Craig to sign on to another James Bond blockbuster.

Craig opens in “Othello” on Monday at the New York Theatre Workshop opposite “Selma” star David Oyelowo, and the production sold out in just hours back in October. But looking closer at the credits, the show’s producer is Barbara Broccoli, scion of the 007 franchise who brought in Craig in 2006 for the string of hits “Casino Royale,” “Quantum of Solace,” “Skyfall” and “Spectre.”

But curmudgeonly Craig has publicly itched to exit the films, sniping in October 2015 that he’d rather “slash [his] wrists” than revisit the role. “I’m over it at the moment . . . All I want to do is move on,” he huffed. Of others who might take over, he charmingly added, “Look, I don’t give a f - - k.”

A week later, it was announced Craig was cast with Oyelowo in “Othello.” This year, as “Othello” approached, Craig changed his tune and said in October of playing Bond: “I would miss it terribly.” (He’s also allegedly been offered $150 million for two movies, which can’t hurt.)

Either way, a source told Page Six of “Othello” and Bond, “Daniel thinks of himself as a ‘serious actor,’ and he wants to stretch his artistic muscles. And Barbara really believes in his talent. For her to do this [play] for him is a gift — of course she wants him back — this is going to entice him to make another Bond movie.” The insider said Broccoli would ask Craig back for the next 007 film, “Bond 25,” sometime after the play’s run. Other insiders add that Craig is amenable to a return to Bond after a hiatus of a few years when he’ll tackle “more serious roles.”

Of the heated speculation over actors who could take over the role — from Idris Elba and Tom Hiddleston to Michael Fassbender and Jack Huston — a source said, “All those people are not in the running.”

Making “Othello” has been a shrewd business decision for Broccoli. “It’s a limited run,” the source said. “She’s not doing this to lose money.”

This is why, I think Bond needs to go young when Craig retires.
ie cast a young guy who will commit to playing Bond for the fame and fortune and glory of it all ie not be sidetracked by Othello during his Bond run.
Cast young, very early 30's. They can retire Bond in their 40's and then play Hamlet or Mr Magoo or whatever.

The thirty year old men of the sixties are incredibly different from men the same age today. Nowadays, it is becoming increasingly difficult to spot thirty-something actors without the appearance of a boyish male model, in contrast to the distinguished ruthlessness Connery possessed circa 1962. This is the main reason for why none of the actors tipped to replace Craig interest me in the slightest.

That said, I have absolute faith that EON will make the right decision. In the franchise's 54 year history, the role of Bond has not once been miscast. There's no reason to start worrying now. I trust Babs and Michael will choose the right man.

Why do people assume Craig would be out of the running beyond 2017? :))

I want someone with a more Fleming-esque appearance (Hoagie), with the traditional Bondian ruggedness (Connery). I can't for the life of me determine an actor to play that persona.

Well, he has been Bond since 2005, and has 4 films under his belt. On top of that, 3 year gaps look to be the minimum between films. How much longer can you see him staying in the role?

Just a reminder, Babs and Michael will be co-producing another west-end play (The Kid Stays in the Picture), which will run until April 2017.

Until MGM gets a grip and actually finds a distributor, they will have to appear to be busy with something else.

That's my assessment of the situation, too. FYI, the fouth-quarter MGM conference call will be released in March. It's likely that we'll be getting a release date window from that.

It's this weird "caught between a rock and a hard place" thing that has come about as a result of the 3-4 years breaks. Anyone under 35 is too young looking and not mature enough, and anyone over 40 is already too old to do more than 3 films without starting to look a bit rough around the edges.

I think Turner is the perfect age at the moment. He could start with Bond 25 or 26 and still fit in at least 4 films. He hasn't really changed appearance much since 2010, which means he is most likely due a "age burst" in the next few years. A few more lines in the face will be good for his chances, as they were for Brosnan back in the day.

EON's not interested in Turner. Only Craig.

Brosnan has seemed to matured as we all should do.. Brosnan like his senior Sir Roger is almost becoming an ambassador for the franchise. At least with interviews like that.

And really expect Craig to return. Some one said earlier we really don't have any candidates that stand out and I agree. Dreadful boring lot.

Oh and kudos for Brosnan for starting in a Texas-centric story :D

Fassbender is the closest thing, definitely. But he'll never play Bond.
