Arnold truly gets the Bond sound more than any other Barry successor. In both CR and QoS, he was forbidden from using the Bond theme prominently, and yet both scores have an undeniably Bondian sound.
For these two films, yes I agree. They were excellent scores, both of them. I'm glad he was told not to use the Bond theme. That prevented any laziness and allowed some impressive compositions from him.

Having said all that, I'm was quite impressed with the GE, LTK and SF scores. They sounded Bondian enough to me without sounding like an inferior Barry copy.

Fifth page discussing past scores now. I guess I am pretty much alone in welcoming both Mendes and Newman back.

If anything, Mendes. Definitely not Newman.

I'd gladly take David Newman. He did an arrangement of an AVTAK suite for this album and it was great. 91priokez1L._SY355_.jpg

You can hear his version of "Snow Job" in this rescore I made.
  • David Newman actually would be fantastic. Imagine the music we could have had for SF and SP had the other brother been on the case:

I don't think Arnold's work comes anywhere close to Barry. It's imitative, but nowhere as good. The only track I can recall that comes within shooting distance is Night At The Opera, and perhaps African Rundown.

Arnold is certainly not Barry, but Vesper's Theme/City of Lovers from CR also comes pretty close, IMO.

But even when he is good, he is just copying John Barry.

I think whoever does score Bond 25 should use more of the Bond Theme and not just as a fanfare. If they can't do that then they should come up with their own theme (like 007) and liberally use that instead.

    Serra's score is the worst
The score of GoldenEye is MILES above anything Arnold has ever done.

Certainly better than CR and perhaps QOS. But I love GE's score.

No chance. CR is a classic score. The best since TLD.

QofS is quite good. It keeps the Vesper theme and the opening car chase is exhilarating.

People complain when a composer tries to sound like Barry, and they also complain when they sound original and different.

In my opinion Barry was amazing but he is overhyped. His scores ended up being repetitive and same-y.

Usually we try to keep threads on topic but as far as this B25 News thread is concerned we gave up about 550 pages ago.
