I'm fine with the old Italian lady too. Don't know why, I just find it... Italian. Hence I forgive the silliness.
This did, though: Fields ridiculously holding the bed sheet across her chest to cover her breasts. There were probably a hundred better positions to put her in to do this naturally. Whose dumb idea was this?
These two moments from the construction site chase rank right up there, as well:
http://jamesbondmemes.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/how-dangerous-are-skyfalls-komodo.html
- lady in QOS wailing during chase
- parachute jump in QOS
- That shameless Goldfinger reference
Good silly:
- The dragons
- The cufflinks (although I don't find that silly - simply Bond)
- Most of the "silly" Skyfall quips I liked as well. But that's just Bond.
And yes, notice how all of the "Bad" ones are in one particular film and the "Good" ones are in another. Mendes knows a HELL of a lot more about how to handle levity than Forster.
As @DarthDimi mentioned, it's mostly about context. In QOS an impossibly difficult to follow chase scene, scored with grit, a grunting Bond, and bloody characters, is broken up by THAT WOMAN.
In SKYFALL we're at this exotic, luxurious and somewhat outlandish casino, there's 45 minutes of film preceding this scene setting up the tone. This is an entirely different world, and Craig is playing a different Bond (one I enjoy more). It's a gorgeous casino, bordering on fantastic, Bond and Eve share much banter, he toasts to the body guards, the "one second" with the briefcase followed by the brawl. It's all wonderfully handled and perfectly Bond. One of my favorite set pieces from the Craig era.
I hear you. Special effects and CGI these days have taken the human work and element out of the equation. Ray Harryhausen would have no place in today's Hollywood.
At the same time, if the technology is there, and it prevents stuntmen from doing things like stepping on crocodiles, then why not use it?
Stuntmen want to do that kind of crazy shit. It all comes down to £££.
Yes, EON didn't want to get in trouble again after all the horrible things they did to that pigeon.
That, and komodo dragons are dangerous creatures. So are alligators, thus I seriously doubt a scene like the one in LALD would be possible nowadays with real animals.
No animal was harmed more than the rat who had to sniff Connery while he smelled like a tarts handkerchief.
That is true, but the pigeon seems to get more attention ;)
True.
Good point. I suppose my argument was that I really enjoyed the spirit of it. I didn't find it "Bad Silliness" for that reason.
And just before that, we see some secretary scanning the papers with the big "do not scan" on warning it :)
LALD is his favourite Bond film.
Moost sillies things from Daniel Craig era:
CR: Solange and Astin Martin joke.
QOS: Boat chase
SF: Elevator scene
I don't think it was a nod. If it was, it was a strange nod, as it was far more tense.
Please explain? Please explain? Please... well, you get the idea
I think it simply translates into; "I don't like Daniel Craig and his films" ;)
1. The rearview mirrors attempt at humor ("I wasn't using that one either") seemed off base considering the gravity of the situation.
2. The overturned fruit stands in the bazaar...cliche cliche cliche
3. The train: somehow, despite a gun fight, despite VW Beetles being knocked off the cargo car by a caterpillar (something M could hear via radio feed), despite train cars being uncoupled...the passengers are nicely glued to their seats and the train conductor has no idea what's going on?
I don't get the elevator criticisms. As others have said: great nod to DAF. And it's well within the bounds of Bond's abilities.
