English-language music produced in your country

I think it's a good idea to see what kind of English-language music your country has to offer. I think there's a lot of music with international appeal that really stays below the radar in many "big music countries" like the USA and the UK.

To kick off this topic, here's some wunderful material that is entirely "mande in The Netherlands". Tell which of below 7 artists are your favourite(s):

"Kraak & Smaak": Sometimes considered as the Dutch "Groove Armada". Even in my country not thát popular, but their electronic music has a nice bit of old school soul/disco appeal. The DJ-/producers-trio consists of Mark Kneppers, Oscar de Jong & Wim Plug. Like Air and Groove Armada they use a lot of guest vocals:

"Lilian Hak": This Utrecht based singer is not very mainstream, as she has a preference for more cinematic sounding music. She never hit the charts in The Netherlands, but she does give a lot of small concerts. Her inspiration comes from "French Noir" movies, but also from spaghetti westerns:

"Wende Snijders": She got her moments of fame during the early 2000's, mostly with exquisitely performed French and Dutch chansons (Alain Delon, Ramses Shaffy and Patrick Burel, to name a few). The past four years she has made a transition to English-language songs. Her last album "Last Resistance" is as mysterious as the work from Björk and Goldfrapp:

"The Common Linnets": If you like pure and smooth country/bluegrass music with a Nashville vibe, then try this band. It consists of the singers Jake Etheridge (American, South-Carolina, USA) and Ilse de Lange (Almelo, The Netherlands). It was one of the biggest surprises during the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest, because no one thought this introverted music could do well in a flashy contest like Eurovision. But it almost won, it came 2nd:

"Sabrina Starke": Originally from Suriname, South-America, she emigrated at very young age to The Netherlands. Her music is mostly characterized as a mixture of pop, soul and R&B. At times she is compared to UK-singer Morcheeba:

"Junkie XL": He came world famous with his remix of Elvis Presyley's "A Little Less Conversation". Like Kraak & Smaak, Junkie XL (Tom Holkenborg) is mainly a producer who uses a lot of guest vocals for his tracks. The past years he has also been very active as movie score composer in Hollywood, working alongside Hans Zimmer. He solely composed the score for "300: Rise Of An Empire" and he takes over the mantle from Hans Zimmer for the upcoming "Batman vs. Superman":

"Caro Emerald": The Dutch singer Caroline van der Leeuw (born 1981) is already well-known in the UK. She already performed for the British Queen Elizabeth. Her music is mostly a mixture of jazz and pop, like the Swedish pop-duo Koop. Some of her more famous songs are these (also with a bit of Bond flavour):

DJ Tiesto did some remix for POTC 2. Yesterday he won a Grammy.

Trijntje Oosterhuis who be Europe songcontest 2015 making CD with White Jazz guy Burt Bacharach and Disney legend Tim Rice.

BLØF also working with Jazz legend who past way in Airplane back to home. There also making a single with Counting Crows, who later get much fame with Shrek 2 title song.

Previously my overal only favorite Dutch singer (Stil, but no much any more..) sings duet with Andrea Bocelli Borsato whas also the first/creater of 'Symphonica In Rosso'' Concerts where also Lionel Richie be one of the follow ups. His writer John Ewbank wrote fames never used Kingsday song and i think he also wrote atleast the start of Nothing really matters for Mr Probz (Dutch John Legend ;) )

A bit about Belgium. Zap Mama who making a song for Mission Impossible 2

  • What?? I didn't know that a Belgian made a title song for "M: I 2" hehe
  • Well here our French artists singing in English can use English names for their international carrier (Daft Punk, obviously, but also Woodkid, for instance), so I'm not sure the international audience know they're French.

But I guess this thread is more about those with only national carrier. So here is a typical 'French hit' sung in English (most French hits are in French, though), that is not probably known outside France. I hear a strong French accent in the singer's voice, I guess it must sound funny to a English ear.

  • It's about both. So also the other way around. I for instance know that Air and Daft Punk are French. But it can't be bad that others know a bit more about the whereabouts of certain famous English-language artists :-).

Well, here's a famous example :Nicole Croisille, who, at the beginning of her career, recorded this song under the "nom de chanteuse" Tuesday Jackson. When she tried to sing the fench version under her own name, people told her that it wasn't as good as the original "american" singer.

Much later, in the 1990s, I saw her singing and acting in English in a production of "Hello Dolly" at the Châtelet in Paris.

    Oooeeeeee, man, I love this ;-)! And she's French. It's a bit...Marlena Shaw-esque ;-). I love the organ intermezzo!

I've got a few to. From Netherlands With Love off course ;-):

George Baker with "Little Green Bag":

    Shocking Blue with "Venus":

Lucifer with "House For Sale" (The Dutch Carly Simon? ;-)):

Earth & Fire with "Weekend" (the old-school-disco crazy, hit in Studio 54 ;-)):

Herman Brood & His Wild Romance with "I Love You Like I Love Myself":

Lois Lane with "I Wanna Be" (like with Sinead O'Connor, Prince also worked heavily with the Klemann Sisters):

CB Milton with "It's A Lovin Thing":

And not famous across the globe, she makes wunderful underestimated songs:

Anouk with "Pretending As Always" (a song about what big assholes student fraternity boys can be):

Anouk with "Kill" (what do you do when you discover your husband is cheating on you? You STAY with him. And perhaps you become like Rosamund Pike in "Gone Girl" ;-)):
