QoS dethroned OHMSS for my #2 ranking with my Bondathon this year. It's perfect in almost every way to me. If not for my deep nostalgia and childhood bias for GE, it could even take that top ranking.

QOS is my second favorite too! :D

    High five on that!

    Absolutely!! : )

The ending is great, but as Denbigh notes, for those of us that liked CR and Qos Bond, and the direction of Craig’s arc forward, the unreleased ending would have been more satisfactory. Also, I always thought Bond should have executed Greene. Although it could be argued that leaving him to drink oil (and eventually die at the hands of White) in the desert was a worse fate. I felt like Spectre copied the ending of Greene in Qos withBlofeld. Bond not killing Blofeld is one of the most anticlimactic moments in Bond history. Just did not feel right.

I agree about Blofeld but I think Greene's death by oil is perfect, as it is exact revenge for Fields' death (who we can all agree deserved better from Greene and from this film).

Yes, Forster said it was all filmed and there's that bit of behind the scenes footage of Jesper and Forster prepping the scene. When Bond entered the room and shot Mr. White, Haines said 'Who the hell are you?', Bond told him by delivering the famous line and then Bond shooting Haines turned into the gunbarrel at the end. Still wish they'd gone with this!

    Or:

Haines: Who the hell are you?
Bond (gesturing to White): He knew my name.

    Blam!

That's not edited right. This is QOS.

When Bond goes into the hotel where M is, doesn’t the note say, “Run”? Who sent that?
His "wife" Fields left the note.
Ahh, never did figure that out! So she knew that M was coming to the hotel ?
Yeah, I would say she discovered the CIA would be after him.
Thanks! That always evaded me for some reason.
My pleasure. I remember pondering over it during my first few viewings.

    Yeah, or
Haines: 'Who the hell are you?'
Mr. White: 'Bond. James - '
    Blam!
    Bond: 'Bond.'
And then he shoots Haines and it turns into the gunbarrel.
I SO need this, even as a fan edit!

Nice post. Yeah, when you think about it, knowing you are either going to die from dehydration, heat stroke, etc. or a Quantum assassin (s), that would be a date worse than death. I read somewhere that Mr. White is the one that eventually killed Greene. He was one slimy character. And Fields did deserve better. Really enjoyed her character.

I wouldn't have minded if they followed the Casino Royale template for gunbarrels in the Craig era:

Certainly would have been better than the gunbarrel we got in QoS (IMO).

Yes, the very first time I saw QOS, I wondered if that shot had originally been intended to lead into a CR-style gunbarrel. That fan edit is exactly how I'd pictured it - excellent, thanks for that.

Would have made for an interesting Skyfall gunbarrel, maybe just Bond getting shot off the train. :))

Good call. Craig's gunbarrels as staged just don't work for me, so this would've worked. There was a shot in NTTD in the bunker where he does perfect pose that would work for that.

While I applaud Craig tried to do many things with the character that differed from his predecessors, his gunbarrel walk is rushed and the pose just awkward in each attempt. It's one of the few drawbacks of the era for me.

I agree with you but I do like the Spectre one, as well as NTTD.

I wouldn't have minded if the shot toward the end of NTTD functioned as an Easter egg gunbarrel...or if the gunbarrel itself became an Easter egg that you were waiting for within the film.

Clearly, Eon wants to move on from the traditional gunbarrel. And after QoS, I think we just could have opened on the frozen Norway tundra.

  • Highly underrated film. Obviously henchman is poor and Fields was an underwritten character imo but the story itself is very strong. Favourite scene like alot of people I suspect is the Tosca opera. I just hope we one day get a directors cut etc with the alternative ending but I suspect that will never see the light of day.

The Tosca 'unmasking' scene is probably my favorite from DC 's entire run... Just classic Bond. QoS had so many strengths that were, granted, overshadowed by it's stunted screenplay - but Mendes just threw all that had been woven out of the window.
SF and SP failed in the respect that it didn't build on QoS' strengths

You see, just compare that opera scene in QOS where Bond just walks in there and gets what he wants with no trouble at all and it’s boring, and compare it to the fun and suspenseful opera scene in Rogue Nation.Mission Impossible has being doing everything better than Bond in its last few entries.

I wouldn't say he got it with no trouble at all, and for me it certainly wasn't boring. I agree that it can feel like Mission Impossible does things a lot cleaner than Bond (Solomon Lane/Syndicate vs. Blofeld/Spectre, for example), but I've always found those movies to be enjoyable and then just slide off the consciousness quickly after watching. And I hate how they solve every problem with Deus Ex Maskina. Talk about getting what you want with no trouble at all...

Couldn't disagree more. Opera seen in MI was good but give me a an average Bond film anytime over Tom "look Ma I'm doing all my own stunts with cheesy silly grin. " Cruise anytime. Dan Craig is a better actor.

That whole Tosca section was glorious. Everything about it - even the soundless chase at the end worked perfectly. In two whole films, I don't think Mendes ever came close to equalling that.

Interesting that, if I recall correctly, there are two soundless chases in QoS? At least, part of the chase at the beginning under the running of the bulls?

Hopefully at some point they will want to sella blu Ray QOS badly enough and throw in the ending that many of us want. The opera scene in QOS is brilliant and vibrant-the score really pulls one in as well. What a shame that Mendes threw it all away. Tragic. Mendes is overrated imo. Can’t understand having two films building on each other, and then Skyfall! I love Skyfall, but it deviates so hard from CR and QOS. I would much rather have seen the Quantum storyline play out than the Spectre hogwash. Did Eon not want Forester back? I know that Christensen didn’t want to return, and seemed kind of nasty about it or I recall. Anyone remember more about it?

    They're both great scenes.

    My list is also still
    CR
    QoS
    SF / NTTD (as tie)

SF I personally kinda kicked off my list completely - I can't stand it even it has some really marvellous scenes and stallar performances in it. But as a whole I really can't stand it.

I just love QoS - it's awesome in my opinion and it's flaws are technical (the editing) and not by what they made out of it even with the writer's strike and other circumstances. I just would want to enjoy the action and locations more which I can't due to the editing.

@SeanCraig You have great taste my friend. I also appreciate you standing up for QOS on the NTTD thread. I guess I’m where you are about Skyfall in relation to NTTD. Simply can’t watch it. Quantum, I enjoyed the first time around, but it was hard to place. I saw it five times at the theatre and it is still my number 2 favorite film. I agree with what you said about the quick location cuts. They did the best they could with the writer’s strike (DC even wrote some of the story as I understand it). I got that from The Making of QOS book. The siting initially threw me off, but I’ve adjusted to it over time. I wish the next Bond would be more like the Bond we saw in QOS and Casino. But with even more of an edge about him. An assassin with years of killing constantly weighing him down (Fleming), and drinking profusely, nightmares, etc. I’m thinking about age 44 ish. Would love to see Hardy get it. Anyway, what are your top 3 favorite scenes in QOS all?

Guess the money persuaded him, because he was quite vehement at the time:

Just re-watched QoS. First time in Blu-Ray quality.

I continue to grow fonder & fonder of this film as time passes. It is such a gorgeously shot Bond-flic. Moved up my DC list to 2nd place this year (not that that's relevant but anywho...)

Things I noticed upon this (4th in total) viewing, after not having seen it for about 7 years :

    *QoS has INTENSITY
The opening car chase, Siena action, Opera action & the fistfights - all pure DC-universe balls-to-the-wall. This drive & intensity is missing in Mendes' films. NTTD recaptures some it.

    *QoS has great lines
Other than the paltry dialogue given to the villains (Almaric is a bit wasted) there are more great lines FOR BOND HIMSELF in this than in any other DC 007 film. And Craig delivers them so well.

*QoS has Daniel Craig's best sequence as Bond
the Tosca Quantum reveal sequence is DC's crowing moment - the moment where he quips to his enemy & becomes 007, for me.

*QoS has a vibrancy - it's saturated colour scheme just brings out the locations so beautifully. It's directed FOR the viewer - SF and SP are directed for the auteur and for great-looking stills...

*QoS has the most gorgeous score, up there with CR, OHMSS and TLD for me.
