Is LALD the most thrifty and least spectacular Bond film?

A few years ago I did a double bill of GF and LALD. Coming after GF you certainly notice a difference in style.

I think the counterculture movement has a lot to do with that.

LALD is Moores best Bond film along with FYEO. Moore is a graet 007, it's just a shame many of his entys were 'too light hearted and comic'. Lewis Gilbert being the main 'criminal' in this regard.

I would say the voodoo theme is pretty spectacular and quite unique.

I agree. I know a lot of people who claim LALD is their favourite and I think that has a lot to do with whole voodoo theme, more so than the film itself.

This is the only RM film I revisit from time to time. Unfortunately, the death of Mr. Big serves as a metaphor for what the RM series becomes--over-inflated. Bigger set pieces and more spectacular SFX did not make for better story telling.

Agreed, A great film but Mr Big's death is a bit of an embarrassment. :(

I'd rather the sharks got him, as in the book. But each to their own. :)

Of course I wish the entirety of the finale of the book showed up in the film. As well as a more faithful characterization of Mr. Big.

On the plus side, it means they can still use a fair deal of the novel, among them Mr Big's death and actually Mr Big himself, if they name him Buonaparte Ignace Gallia.

For a brief time in early 2007, I wondered if we'd get an updated version of live and let die

Me, too. I kind of wished they did all the Fleming novels in order.

In some ways, QOS was. It was partially inspired by the novel LALD in any case: a villain working from Haiti, Caribbeans as part of the settings, some action in the water, etc. In many ways, SF was also inspired by MR.

Here is hoping SPECTRE will be somewhat inspired by DAF.

Somebody posted the other day that there are
three helicopter scenes in this movie. Maybe they could do away with a villain ala Jack Spang

Not if it is inspired by the novel DAF. As the movie failed to be.

Oh of course! But not sure it needs to be considered spoiler, as most of it is speculation and the rest if I am not wrong is common knowledge.

I only spoilered it as I'm not sure where the
three choppers info came from. Thought it might be the kind of thing to piss certain people off.

Its plot is the least spectacular. I mean . . . really, MI-6 investigating drug manufacturing outside of Britain?

They wouldn't investigate inside Britain. That's MI5's turf.

I know that. Why on earth was MI6 investigating a drug manufacturing case in the first place. Isn't that for Interpol or something like that?

There's a deleted scene somewhere involving m and the head of mi5, saying oo7 has been fighting spectre for so long, let's let special agent Larry from mi5 do spectre--he's been itching for action--and let's let 007 get a cultural experience by sending him to Harlem.
