@mtm I'm traveling to a location where at the very least I can purchase Kindle versions, I'll also be on the lookout for physical copies.
That was part of my wishlist with the IFP survey. Fingers crossed that they listen to us!
Okay cool. I must say I would like a look at this one just because I know the writer is of a professional standard, unlike with most of these efforts. To be honest I think it's likely to be better than most of the Bensons, as I never thought he was really up to it.
I thought I might be able to find it through nefarious methods, but there's no sign of it anywhere that I can find.
Contraband! I love it.
Mindful of the book opportunities, within Victoria I searched out used book stores seeking a copy of Licence Expired. Unsuccessfully.
Russell Books was pretty extensive and organized to collect Bond novels in one location. But the staff didn't recognize the targeted item. They did seem to enjoy listening to my story about public domain and its effects in Canada.
At Bastion Books Rare and Secondhand the nice man operating the store recognized what I was looking for. He'd possessed a copy at one time, described it as having one story carefully cut out of it. Described the stories and the book as good quality.
From that I expressed further interest in the book, even if it wasn't complete. And he politely further shared that he'd given that copy to an interested friend and no longer had it. The man did give good advice: that probably thrift shops were the best bet to locate a copy at this point.
Getting around on my last day in country, I tried some of that but didn't have time to properly go through what were unorganized sometimes large collections of donated books. Over time I may have a similar opportunity and give it more time.
Another place of note I visited was The Haunted Bookshop in Sidney, just north of Victoria Airport. The gentleman there was helpful, but suggested locations I'd already tried. He confirmed Bond novels were collected in an area, and I couldn't resist buying (a second) hardcover Hodder & Stoughton printing of John Gardner's Brokenclaw.
Restarting conversation with him, I mentioned the early part of the book actually takes place in nearby Victoria. It came back to him that he'd actually read the novel, and my further interest expressed for connections between Victoria and San Francisco triggered some detail. He confirmed shared history for the gold rush, arrival of an Asian workforce, and Chinatown enduring. History books representing Victoria and British Columbia around the late 1800s and some time after were printed in San Francisco, where the established resources were.
On Licence Expired, I live to buy another day and look forward to a future opportunity.
I guess you probably need to buy these things from Amazon there.
I must admit it’s Firewalker which still interest me the most, still can’t find it.
