    My well-written argument was a lot more indepth than simply adding a (+2) next to the name of a rushed novel day after day week after week and skewing the outcome an otherwise enjoyable knockout. Where is your defence of this book? But maybe this is not the thread for it...

    In the last chapter, are we asked to believe that Bond went to hospital (to treat horrific injuries that change from paragraph to paragraph because Fleming was losing interest in what he was writing), then went to M's office for a debriefing, then went to meet Gala who also, since that morning, had time to go to hospital, change her outfit, and go out on a date to the park with her fiancée?

    Not to mention basic story failings: we are robbed of a direct confrontation between Bond and Drax, Bond and Krebs, etc. It's the literary equivalent of "Poochie died on the way back to his home planet".

    This is not to mention the hackneyed WW2-era storyline and lack of exotic locations, one of Fleming's major strengths.

    Aside from the great villain, Moonraker is a washout. Should be around 10 or so on the knockout, ahead of only Casino Royale and the short stories.

    Moonraker gives the most in depth look at the life and every day experiences of James Bond. It's not my favourite, but it's a very fine book, and Fleming was erratic to say the least. Accusing anyone of hijacking the thread, with no evidence, is juvenile to say the least.

    Read Casino Royale last week, and IMO it's not very good. Many people are letting their opinion on the film colour their stance towards this very amateurish book.

    I've been on the Bond fan circuit for 20 years now, and only in the last few have Moonraker and Casino Royale been reappraised. They've historically been considered among the weaker books, along with Spy and Golden Gun.

    Maybe it is an insult to some of us to see the likes of the "Octopussy" short story ranked above a classic like Dr No (the best IMO).

    The only way a knockout like this works is if every single member gets to vote each day. Otherwise it becomes a hobby horse for people pushing shoddy product. These knockout results reflect that... although I'm happy with the top three.

    Apologies :) It can be frustrating to see universal praise for something you know is of low quality, and seeing quality stuff eliminated before the likes of Octopussy and Risico.

    I've tried to like MR more but it really doesn't do it for me. The Blades stuff aside, I find it a bit dull, compared to the other titles on here. The lack of the usual travelogue of interesting location detail certainly adds to this.

    I must say I concur with @Brilliant in this. I know Moonraker has a strong fan base, which I never really understood. For me the likes of Dr. No and LALD are far better books. Even the slightly unstable MWTGG is, imo, bettter, more gripping and more esciting. But there you go. Lessons learned. ;-)
