Hold on fellows, let's remember this bit from Moonraker:
...it was his ambition to have as little as possible in his banking account when he was killed, as, when he was depressed, he knew he would be, before the statutory age of forty-five.
Eight years to go before he was automatically taken off the 00 list and given a staff job at Headquarters. At least eight tough assignments. Probably sixteen. Perhaps twenty-four. Too many.

That's your answer: Bond would have died at the age of 45. Dreading his future as a desk-bound staffer at headquarters, he ventured out on his last assignment as a OO. Facing the most diabolical villains of his career, he foiled their plans and saved the world, but at the cost of the ultimate sacrifice. Only a few people showed up at the funeral--May, M, Tanner, Mary Goodnight, Loelia Ponsonby, and Felix Leiter--but her Majesty sent her regards. Flowers arrived from Messrs. Mathis, Draco, and Tanaka.

As weeks and months went by, news slowly spread to a handful of women--Simone Latrelle (now running a psychic shop in Las Vegas), Gala Vivian (née Brand), Tiffany Case (single again after a messy divorce), Tatiana Romanova (leading a comfortable if dull existence in Ottawa), Honey Wilder (née Ryder, happily married with two kids), Pussy Galore (now managing the world's biggest whorehouse), Dominetta Petacchi (married to a Count in Naples), Vivienne Michel (managing a co-op in San Francisco), and Kissy Suzuki (mother of a little hellraiser named James). Some shed a lone tear (quickly concealed from their husbands) and recalled the brave secret agent who briefly but so memorably walked in and out of their lives.

Tragic though his death was, all those who knew James Bond came to the same conclusion: it was for the best, for in forty-five years he lived more than any other man could do in a hundred. James Bond would never grow old.
