I still think one of the best moments of the Craig was the ending of Skyfall, when has a bit of playful banter with Moneypenny, walks into M's classic office , with the padded leather door, and got an assignment from M
My biggest disappointment from Spectre and even NTTD was we never got to see that dream realised
Hopefully the next era starts with Bond getting a mission from M

Might be a bit too Mission Impossible though, no?

Not if it's only for the hand off of the assignment. Literally a couple of minutes. And it doesn't need to be a staple or anything. I always liked the scene where M visits Bond's apartment in LALD, for example. Bond being sought out rather than called in suggests urgency.

Bond getting called in would be cool. A bit like in DN when they go to the club (admittedly it's rather funny in hindsight, especially given the fact that Bond has presumably been up all night drinking and gambling and rocks up to M's office, but whatever). I'm not a fan of the LALD scene though and find it a bit childish. There's simply no reason for M to be going straight to Bond's flat, never mind being out in the field. If anything it suggests M's importance more if Bond has to go to him/her for the assignment. Again, I'd like to see a proper briefing scene along the lines of the novels - the dark room, grey London fog outside, everything rather covert etc.

Also, a part of me can't help but think of M/Bond's 'interesting experience in Tokyo' if they did ever show M giving Bond his mission while on holiday, haha.

Well, there were the pretty funny "field offices" on the sub and in Egypt and I don't remember where else. If they go for a more camp, slightly more funny/silly variation, they could bring those back.
Bond is somewhere in the world doing one thing or the other in the PTS (gamble, action piece, seduce someone) which then ends with him getting a message to meet M at Station F at 1800 hours or something like that. Titles and then Bond walks into some a café or a nightclub or a tailorshop (well, can't do that after Kingsman) or anything else related to the area of the world he's in and in a backroom is Moneypenny (maybe more bodyguard/bouncer than pure secretary/assistant) and then M. Proceed from there.
It obviously shouldn't be like a crazily stereotypical thing, but it could still work.

@mtm I do like the idea of ditching London altogether and having Bond be deep cover and constantly on the move. Maybe M could be some sort of shadowy, Charlie’s Angels type boss, and Moneypenny could be reimagined as a handler type who gives him each mission? And Q could just have a cool new lab in whichever exotic location, I always find those variations the most fun anyway.

I think it just has to feel very different and new, whatever they do. I’ve enjoyed the last few films a lot, but for all the stick they got from fans for deviating from the formula, I do think they seemed to be almost in reverence of that old iconography. Which was fun for the 50th in SF, but it’s probably time to create some new icons now.

Yeah I like that. Almost make Bond more independent, and makes more of a thing of his playboy lifestyle.

I feel the field offices were used in the earlier Bond films to give off the idea that the stakes were raised. Kinda like MI6 have had to pitch up their tent and go out in the field to directly tackle this world threatening issue (TSWLM does this much better than YOLT). Still, it always felt a bit out of the ordinary and had to be justified by the bigger villain plot etc. Otherwise there's no reason why M would ever be there, even if he was on holiday (I dunno, just feels like a cheap gag and unnecessary).

I do love the idea of seeing a Station [insert whatever letter] in an unusual location though. Would give the next Bond film more of an espionage feel. Bond meets various officials and heads of stations in the novels so why not have a character like that in such a place who is either an ally to Bond or antagonistic?

Bond as a playboy bouncing around the world, living the high life...like The Saint ? Batman ? I'm sure you did not mean to suggest turning Bond into one of them, to the extent that lifestyle matches those of the characters I mentioned. As far as Bond not showing up at "the MI6 office" like a person with some corporate or governmental job, that certainly makes great sense. In fact, it made sense even at the time of some, if not all, Fleming's novels. Then again - Bond stories are not about realism.

Didn't he showed up at M office in NTTD and got his assignment? I'm confused here.
The scene doesn't count because it's 50mn in and not 10mn in?

I liked the start of TLD as the Gilbratar location was both different, made sense re a training location but still within "our" territories so a kind of intrinsic link to "the glory days" of the Empire of that makes sense but in a subtle way. On that basis, I wonder if some action in the Falklands would work?

I've been thinking about this for days, and I've just realized.

Well, there's one part of Bond left that I want to see on screen.
It's still left, but I don't know who can do it convincingly, I don't think even Dalton nailed this aspect of the character, none of the Bond actors have played this attitude.

    SNOBBERY

Yes, I want to see it on screen! Please,

    1. Bond ditching the tea, blaming it for the fall of the British Empire.
    2. Bond's opinions about Politics (in Goldfinger, he has opinions about women's right to vote).
    3. His perspectives and point of views.
    4. Him being bully, calling the villain ugly, bitch, etc. In the books, he's calling the villains "you bitch! You ugly!"
    5. His thoughts and remarks about everything (he made a secret remark about Honeychile Ryder's broken nose), him examining the lairs that he's entering.
    6. Being the know it all guy (Bond telling Gala Brand about how flowers got hurt when they're picked).
    7. Bond being picky about the foods he eat, knowing the qualities of his foods, like Eggs and their country of origin.

I want the next Bond actor to bring these aspects of the Bond character on screen.

I really hope we don't get Bond giving his political opinions. The British Empire line works well in Fleming but it'd come off as bizarre in the context of a modern film. Same for the Women's Rights thing. Ideally I think Bond should be a blunt instrument - he may be cynical about the nature of his job, and certainly the politics behind it, but ultimately he's drawn to his profession because a) he's addicted to danger and b) deep down his only virtues (to paraphrase Fleming) are bravery and patriotism.

Also, it's difficult for a film to directly convey Bond's thoughts. A VO would be strange. If anything it says more when Bond is rather understated in the films (ie. Brosnan during the Paris Carver hotel scene in TND, Craig's Bond when he looks out at the scenery/M tries to talk to him about his past during Skyfall). Arguably it's more Fleming-esque too when it comes to the more emotional aspects of Bond's character.

I do want to see Bond's passion for food/drink and other subjects brought out more though. Maybe a scene where Bond and the Bond girl have dinner and Bond gives a few lines about this type of food or whatever. I feel that sort of stuff was missing from the Craig era.

Any of the food and wine and travel appreciation would make much more sense were it explained as it was in the book(s) -- that Bond expected to die on the job. In the meantime, if he were going to have a meal, a glass of wine, etc., he wanted genuinely to enjoy it. It might be his last.

He absolutely bugs the life out of me, too. I don't know why. And when he has interesting guests on he always ends up looking worse. Although, I have to give him credit - he works hard on the videos. They're always fairly substantial.

I like that scene. Shows Bond in ‘hunt’ mode even when off duty - whether looking for prey in fellow gamblers or available women. Even off duty, Bond is in control and dangerous

I agree that Bond shouldn’t get political. Even if his views are ‘on message’, they will be divisive in today’s world. And will date quickly - like TLD.

EON were clever in using SPECTRE instead of Russians for the baddies.

I don’t follow his videos, but I really liked that video where he brought his niece to share her views on NTTD and James Bond in general. It was a nice way to get a perspective on how younger audiences view Bond compared to older generations.

Him, Calvin Dyson and James Bond radio are all great in my opinion. I don't always agree with their opinions, but they love Bond and they all helped with the wait for NTTD

Agreed. Zaritsky's a great guy and humble guy. What he's achieved over the last 14 years or so is quite remarkable. He's really done a lot for the Bond community and it's admirable how generally inclusive and supportive he is. Throughout the pandemic I felt he went above and beyond with his content, online live events etc and really kept the Bond hype flame burning, keeping folks engaged when enthusiasm and hope started to wane due to the delays, and of course what was going on in society. He may not be to everyone's liking but I think his contributions have been helpful, inspiring and an honest journey of his passion that in one way or another resonates with a lot of people. He's a stand up guy in my book.

    Very nicely put :-bd

It's amazing how his position as a Bond influencer has grown too; Bond fans like to gripe that Eon/the studio never engage the fans in anything, but he's a fan and he got to interview the stars of NTTD in the press launch for the film, he now gets invited to all the launches across the world of the big tie-in products like the Astons or the top end clothes, he got taken to Omega HQ to talk to Craig and Wilson about Bond's Omega in the film etc. - it's fun to see all of this stuff, and from the point of view of an excited fan.
