I just hope whoever becomes Bond next doesn't have Purvis and Wade writing his scripts. When DC leaves, they have to go with him!

They've written more Bonds then Richard Maibaum. While not all of Maibaum's stuff was top tier, even his lower tier still beats Purvis and Wade. And yet they keep surviving and keep writing for Bond. What is it with these guys? Do they have pics of Babs or Michael in compromising situations? How are they able to survive 2 Bonds, countless directors and keep writing for Bond. You can't tell me that there aren't better writers out there?

Michael and Barbara seem to be put great stock in keeping the Bond "family" together and I guess with the success you can't blame them. Just be nice to see a different writer(s) get a chance to have some fun with Mr. Bond. Look at how many times P&W have used the off active duty trope for their Bond. Look at all the personal angle stories we have got with them at the typewriters.

Geez I hope you are right @MaxCasino

According the book Some Kind of Hero, the reason the writing is good (other than Fleming's original book), is that Martin Campbell had to keep pushing for better material. He actually wanted them fired more than once apparently. After Spectre's less than average script that they fixed (NEVER have them fix a script, only start it), and the writing nightmares of Bond 25, EON should really learn their lesson with them.

I personally hope they go for a Goldeneye style reboot, new actor, he new supporting cast (except Q), different feel and tone and great dialogue like Goldeneye had. They don't need to explain what it does to the timeline, like Goldeneye didn't

If I had to pick a new actor, I'd go for Richard Madden or Aidan Turner

Personally I'm dreading the day Daniel steps down, I've loved his arch and his 007. He is my favourite actor, the man is Bond

Yes, this, all of it. More on the Turner camp, though.

@univex yeah that's cool, I'd be happy with either honestly. They're the only two I can envisage in the role that would have believability and not be stunt casting

I think Marvel pretty much changed the franchise game in Hollywood. I'm curious what they're going to do with Iron Man now that RDJ is done. How they handle things might be an example for Bond.

After Craig leaves, I would still like to see a period series, like a parentheses in the franchise that either takes Bond back to the Cold War with someone like Fassbender or Luke Evans playing or maybe even a young commander Bond series, as they treat Bruce Wayne in Gotham. Then reboot with the actual "new" Bond.

For me, Bond and the Bond formula are inextricably linked. It's something which has developed slowly over time, refining with each new generation, and I think just chucking all those traditions has been a mistake. But I also think that bringing back the elements while Craig is in the role is also a mistake, because it just makes him look out of place. The films need to return to a status quo after Bond 25, much like they did with Goldeneye after Timothy. Some people like to complain that Goldeneye is a greatest hits package, but that IMO is why it's so loved. There's a big difference between the formula when it's done right with the right actor (Goldeneye) and when it isn't (Spectre). They need to get back to what made Bond great.

Definitely agree @Mendes4Lyfe. I'm curious about what EON will do next; will the next guy just be a younger Craig kind of Bond, continuing the style and tone of this era, will he be somewhere in the middle of a Craig Bond and a Brosnan Bond (for example), or will they – unlikely as it may be – go in a lighthearted direction.

If they go for a "Craig 2.0" then they should definitely not overdo the Bond formula. It'll probably feel as forced as in SP. If they go down down the route of toning down the brutal edge to Bond – taking him just a little closer to a Brosnan era kind of style, then they might just go full on Bond formula, IMO. Same with an even more lighthearted kind of Bond.

What I would like to see for the next Bond, on a scale of 1-10 where 1 is the most lighthearted moments of Moore Bond and 10 is the most brutal scenes of the Craig era, is a 5 – possibly a 4 or a 6 depending on the actor they cast.

It comes down to the actor they cast and his strengths as an actor. If they can cast someone like Moore they have to go lighthearted. I suspect they will get Craig back for another, to be honest. He looks great, younger than he did before actually, and I feel like he isn't done with the role yet. Maybe they can fast track one to be ready for the 60th anniversary during 2022. That would be fantastic.

That's an interesting way of putting it.

My feeling is that they'll turn away from the 'brutal/intense/gritty' mode for a little while, simply because they have to. There's nowhere much to go on that road after Craig, he's totally defined it.
So my wager is that it will be a middle way, as you guess. Someone with convincing physicality but a bit more panache and charm.
If we had a time machine, a (younger) Hiddleston would be great as this bridge to Moore, I think.

This is never ever going to happen but had Pierce Brosnan not left the franchise under such a stormy sky - I recall he made a rather negative comment about the producers (!) - I think EON should have considered a sort of Batman The Dark Knight Returns one-off Bond film with Pierce Brosnan with grey hair and beard forced back into the 00 division. Brosnan's older look, particularly embracing the grey - the beard would remain throughout the entire film - would suit an older Bond back in action.

    Title:

    AGENT FOR HIRE

A number of 00 agents have been killed in mysterious circumstances. A mysterious truth is revealed regarding Bond's past. M believes the two events are connected. Despite objections from within MI6, M recalls Bond back to service.

As part of the deal to get Brosnan, EON agree to give him some creative freedom. Brosnan plays the role a little bit more embittered and cynical. We see a different side to Brosnan's Bond. Less playboy, more aware of his own mortality. More downbeat, perhaps.

AGENT FOR HIRE would be the LOGAN X MEN of the Bond franchise.

The film would be marketed as Brosnan's return to the role. The tagline could be:

    'Secret Agents Never Retire'

I think you could argue Brosnan is the right age to pull this off. Once you hit your 70s it's less credible. A 60 something James Bond - in a one-off film - could work.

As a type he fits the bill of a 5-6 out of 10 on a "Bond brutality scale". Agree that he's probably to old to be considered now anyway. Hopefully when they come around to recasting the part, there are some good candidates available.

I can't see any screenwriter being brave or mad enough to consider this idea but given the huge box office appeal of current superhero films, if there was a way for the new villain to have some superhero power (lol), it might be worth considering from a box office perspective. Could that work? Probably not. Just throwing it out there as a wacky idea! I accept it's a crazy suggestion but it would be a dramatic change in tone after the Craig era.

Gustav Graves in his "power suit" Is superhero enough for me, I hope I'll never see that kind of things again in a Bond movie 😐

I'd be all for this. Brosnan has become a better actor since he left Bond, sadly. Well, actually it's good because he's going strong now. I believe there is a sequel to November Man coming soon. Not the best film ever but a solid spy thriller.

Not sure if they'd get this political but if they wanted a new big bad/overarching story rather than going standalone then a modern take on SMERSH would be cool and relevant. They were always a scarier group than SPECTRE in the books anyway, mainly thanks to those chapters in FRWL.

I think those hoping for another Brosnan era will be disappointed. Don't think that's BB's style. I think she cast Pierce because he was Cubby's choice and used those films as sort of a trial run to learn the ropes, but the Craig era is the sort of thing she's always wanted to do. There's traces of it in TWINE and even DAD. So I think that we'll get something similarish in tone.

I just hope that they realise the films can be character focused without the plots being personal. You can have Bond on a normal mission with no personal relevance to him and still have him be a layered character and examine what makes him tick.

I get the feeling that Babs and Micheal might be done with Bond after Bond 25. Total speculation of course, but I think they are focused on other projects and if Craig hadn't come back for Bond 25, they probably would have sold the rights after SPECTRE.

Disney has been buying IPs and studios like its nobodies business, and I think the others guys are gonna start buying up whats left in order to compete. Bond is a highly valuable property in that market. Thats why I think EON only had a one picture deal for Bond 25, because they don't have any interest in further movies after that. This is just an opinion, but I think still interesting to discuss. There could be a major shake up to come after Bond 25, and it could take a few years for the dust to settle. I think EON may just be looking to go out on a high, which is why they were able to get Craig back as a personal favour to Babs.

I think the producers will follow up with BOND 26 much faster than they did for 24 and 25.

I think much of the same, but it (mostly) depends on factors that are out of EON's hands, namely the whole distribution deal: Will MGM seek to renew the contract with Universal? Will Universal take over domestic distribution too? Will MGM just outright sell the whole studio? These factors are deciding in how fast the turnaround is.

A second thing we mustn't forget is: How fast is EON willing to seek out Craig's replacement? BB has said numerous times that she wants to keep Craig until he walks away. Will EON hold out for Craig to do Bond 26 or have they come to an agreement that Bond 25 will indeed be his last? The decision when to move on is crucial. And thirdly, how long does EON need or are they willing to take to seek out a new actor? We know they probably have lists, they hold screen tests in between longer periods, but how narrow is that list at the moment Craig formally announces his departure?

These things decide how long it will take. I agree EON probably wants to release the films in quicker succession. We know from investor calls MGM wants Bond to return to a 3 to 4 year cycle. Not undo-able, but actually doing it is something else.

I'd like to think they'd jump on renewing the distribution deal immediately after B25, then get to work on developing the next film. However, the distribution deal could take quite some time as it did for B25.
Then there's deciding on an approach post -Craig and developing the initial film for the next actor.
Of course, Barbara and Michael may want to take a couple years off to do other projects as they did prior to this film once the dust has settled after B25 and Craig has officially left.
I'd really love for Eon to get back into the swing of things and get B26 out in 2022 in time for the 60th, but it may be out of their hands. Bond films take far longer to develop, produce and release in this day and age.

If bond 25 is critically acclaimed and hits a billion you might see a follow up in 2.5 to years time. They should let Craig go after this one, even Craig has said as much.

B25 is a reaction to the Sony hacks. They were understandably skittish after SP, and they needed to find a new distributor, which led to further delay (along with convincing Craig). I don't think Eon wants to sell out for B26, which makes them not a match for many strong-arm studios.
