I'm glad they didn't do a ski sequence, it would have felt out of place for Daniel's no nonsense Bond and too much of a OHMSS nod.
I love the fact that Bond didn't hesitate to use whatever vehicle he could find at a moments notice, like the digger in Skyfall or the tank in Goldeneye, there's something Bondian about him using a vehicle in a different way than it's intended to be used.
Yeah it's really a subject which is good enough for its own thread, but I would say that a defining aspect of Bond action scenes or moments is him using something (often a vehicle) for a purpose contrary to its usual expectations, usually in an audacious and cool unflappable way.
Bond will often see a solution which is purely logical (well, movie logic!) but everyone else would dismiss as being ridiculous; and as often as not that actually makes us laugh because of his sheer bold fearlessness and style. So in that way the action scenes are often character moments for Bond himself.
The moon buggy came to mind immediately. ;-)
A panel of idiots who know very little of the subject they were debating on. One of the women saying Bond was never written as white? :))
The older guy in the suit looks like he’s a character straight out of a Harry Enfield sketch…. Actually the premise of this would make a good Harry Enfield sketch as these sort of Bond discussions end up being a bit pointless/vapid all round.
A couple of years ago Piers Morgan accused 007 of being emasculated because Daniel Craig was papped wearing a baby carrier- that's the sort of level of debate we're talking about.
To be fair, she’s the sane one, and what she actually said was ‘you don’t have to be white to be british’ which is true. She did get wrong that ‘it was never said that he was Irish or Scottish or whatever, I might be wrong’ but her point stands these days. It’s statistically more likely that a child of Scots and Swiss heritage raised in moneyed circumstances in Britain would be white, but it doesn’t discount other possibilities into the realm of unbelievability.
I got a bit bored, so I haven’t seen what colonel mustard on the end says, but even the presenter isn’t exactly demonstrating much expertise, and the (ironically positioned) far right person is in for the outrage machine anyway. She was honestly just rattling off cliches that didn’t even exist in Bond in the Moore or Connery eras.
Daft as a brush.
You want to really make money? British Indian Bond. India quite likes the films you know.
Let's not get into a tiresome 'can Bond be non-white' debate anyway, they never go well.
It’s not something that a channel like GB News with its limited segment time and vested interest in maintaining its ‘anti-woke’ audience can do justice. I don’t get the sense any of these guests know much about Bond. But honestly, that’s pretty common whenever I’ve seen this topic discussed on more mainstream outlets.
The sequence we did get in SP was supposed to continue with a skimobile chase through the village and end with Bond 'confronting Hinx at a dam' according to the Empire 'making of' feature. Apparently it was scrapped because 'the water levels were uncertain and a huge vehicle ramp would have had to be built.' Ah well, again. That French CJB site had some artwork from it:
If Higson had more time to write OHisMSS, Æthelstan forcing Bond into an actual medieval joust feels like something he would've done.
Yes, as much as I like Mr. Hinx, Charlotte King would be a great villain in the future. Just hopefully not a plot twist where she turns bad.
A snowmobile chase I could get behind.
Set in 1972 (so not *that* period but not modern day at the time), it goes right back to Bond’s days as a lieutenant in the Royal Navy, and how he becomes recruited into MI6. The film ends with Bond being dispatched to Jamaica to investigate Dr No 🤯
So its not like EoN havent looked at the idea before, perhaps not to the extent Nolan might be proposing.
FWIW I am against the idea.
MGW: “Cubby felt we shouldnt really look backwards”
On the original idea for Charlotte King thing, as per The James Bond Archives:
Bond confronts SPECTRE’s leader Charlotte King - Blofeld’s daughter - in her radioactive volcano lair
She later became a double crossing CIA agent. Elements of her role go to Mr Hinx.
(Yes I am enjoying reading this book).
Also, the idea of Bond having a daughter was mooted for Spectre as well, called Adrianna, though the way the book describes it, she would potentially be late teens or early 20s.
I do find it interesting that they had a few drafts with a femme-fatale henchwoman before abandoning all of them. One of the drafts even included an alternate version of Irma Bunt, who would've been the one holding Madeleine hostage at the MI6 building. If I remember correctly, Madeleine and Irma would've fallen onto the net that we saw in the film, before it breaks and Irma falls to her death.

Further disruption to the film industry, and my project has been pushed to a spring start.
This has been ugly, continues to be ugly, and the reprucussions of these strikes is already being felt with delayed releases, delayed production starts, productions that have been killed and will never see the light of day, and streamers have cut budgets and are green-lighting far less.
Bond, like other big projects are in a holding pattern.
Those are really bad news…
It really is.
The WGA just ratified, what, two days ago, and the actors are still on strike. Yet still we hear grumblings from fans that EoN should be shooting through preproduction.
Talk to Superman: Legacy, a hotly anticipated project. They've delayed filming until Spring, and one has to feel they will no longer meet their release date (they haven't changed the date yet, hoping that they can still squeak into this space; once shooting starts, I all but guarantee the date will get pushed).
My ten million dollar project has been pushed, but thankfully, for now, the cast we had attached is staying on, although finding a male lead during SAG's strike has been a challenge (mostly due to SAG's incompetence with the interim agreement).
Btw, and because i too am a few pages late, hell of a post @Mendes4Lyfe. Well said.
@FoxRox and @Univex , very nice of you to say and thank you!
I think we are safe because my producer, who I call, "my own Barbra Broccoli" is a savvy and respected executive. She has kept us functioning, the cast loves her, and she's re-steucturing a successful shoot in Spring. I'm very lucky to have her, and during the rollercoaster of the last few weeks, when I thought we may be dead, she's pulled miracles and bunny rabbits from her hat.
But I know, or have heard about, no less than two dozen projects that lost their financing during this time. Maybe one or two will be able to crawl out of the grave.
This number of dead projects will only increase.
It's really sad, because this isn't just about the writers, or just about the actors, it's about the Below Line Talent that are suffering (location crews, scouts, hair and makeup, wardrobe, crafts services, set designers and builders....). The majority of these guys haven't had a real pay check in almost six months!!! Imagine the stress, and these are the unsung heroes which bring together all the movie magic; behind every Tom Cruise, or Daniel Craig, is an army of anonymous people that make these guys look good!
