Where does Bond go after Craig?

This is getting boring by the press.

Don't forget EON brought this on themselves. If they had released Bond 25 in 2019 like they were supposed to, and then taken advantage of the 60th anniversary to launch the new bond the press would be singing their sweet praises along with the rest of us. It's not their fault EON decided to power down and go into stasis for 4 years.

I’m not buying a bit of this either, and I don’t buy ATJ as a possible Bond personally. Seems odd his name keeps being brought up by outlets every so often.
Although I don’t buy the story I will say I saw him and his wife with my own eyes at the big official Eon 007 60th anniversary concert at the Albert Hall last year. So there is some sort of connection there. It may just be that his wife and Ms Broccoli are connected as powerful women in the film industry, who knows.

I don't believe it personally, I wouldn't mind ATJ getting the role but I doubt they'd hand it to him. I'm sure he'll have to audition

I still have my doubts as he's a lead in a superhero film isn't he? I doubt EON want to share their leading man

I always presumed it was a case where ATJ was likely one of several actors who’d been approached/had a chat with the producers. I think they know ATJ a bit anyway. I highly doubt anyone’s been offered the role (and by this I mean they’ve not been invited to audition) and certainly no auditions have taken place. It’s literally just to gauge interest and get to know potential candidates. ATJ perhaps just happened to be the biggest name/his meeting was picked up by the press and they’ve ran with it ever since.

I mean, I don’t know for sure, but that’d make the most sense. Personally, I’ve gone back and forth on him a bit as a potential Bond, but my gut instinct tells me I don’t think he’s the best pick. I think whoever it is will be slightly more left field. As always I could be wrong though.

I feel the same: I would hope they find someone a bit more interesting.
  • No one knows who is in the running.

What makes you so sure? Craig was first rumoured at least half a year before he got announced.

For those who remember this last time round, were rumours of Craig’s casting all that prominent before his announcement? From my understanding in the year before that the rumour mill tended to favour the likes of Clive Owen. It’s only when the casting process was into its last stages that rumours with grains of truth tend to appear… such as this from 2005: https://www.mi6-hq.com/sections/articles/bond_21_report_july05

I mean, reading some of that is a bit ridiculous in hindsight. One would never know that the producers had their eye on Craig well prior to auditions and that presumably he was the favourite. Anyway, there can’t be a front-runner if there are no auditions yet, no?

So I just wanted to take the time quickly to just say that I am onboard for whatever EON are gonna throw at us. At whatever time. I don’t need them to rush, I don’t need them to pick the guy I’d like to see in the role, I don’t need them to avoid any certain directors or writers. I’m not even bothered if they bring anyone back. I love James Bond through and through so I’m happy to wait to see my favourite franchise hit the big screen again. In the meantime I have 25 glorious films to enjoy because no matter any specific ranking I love them all and will continue to as the franchise continues.

I didn't hear Craig's name mentioned until he was announced (not that I was on sites like this which are totally dedicated to Bond).

I seem to remember Michael Madsen saying Brosnan had told him it was going to be some Australian (I think that was on Dark Horizons). That was at least a year before the announcement, though.

Maybe he was talking about Sam Worthington?

Could have been, but also might have been Julian McMahon who was pretty popular around then.

Didn't Dan himself say that BB told him straight out that 'we want you to do this'? If that's true, doesn't it suggest that Craig was the only one that EON actually wanted to play Bond ('we want you to do this') and that anyone else who did a screentest was pretty much auditioning for the fall-back position if Dan turned it down? It'd explain why Campbell's preference for Cavill made no difference whatsoever. If that was the case in 2005, that's a big difference from the current position where (as far as we know) EON don't seem to have their heart set on one particular actor. Means there's a lot more to gauge and weigh-up this time around.

I think even if a specific actor was on EON’s radar currently we wouldn’t know about it until after the casting. It seems to me reading that article from 2005 that once casting is underway (and we will know when this happens - it’s really not a secret) some truth will inevitably trickle into the rumour mill. Most of it will be rubbish, but there might well be a name that keeps cropping up over a three month period - perhaps an actor you might remember from a smaller movie or who’d been mentioned in these forums perhaps.

I think it will be Sope because he’s very much a black Daniel Craig, and I think that’s what BB will be looking for.

    Jesus, I hope not.

I also picked up a strong vibe of Craig being 'the one' that they really wanted.

In a similar sense, I have often wondered about the screen-testing of other actors while Roger was re-negotiating his contract. They always picked him in the end. Were those others fall-back 'reserves' too, just in case Roger said no definitively?

If it's going to be Nolan, and he has to bring one of his former actors into it, I think Fionn Whitehead from Dunkirk would be far better than ATJ.

As opposed to what? I can't really see any other explanation.

    I think he's a great actor @slide_99 but he's only 26 and 5′ 9″.

As opposed to some of those actors being seriously considered to replace Roger no matter what.

Maybe also a bit of an incentive for Roger not to push it too far or spin the negotiations out too long - give him the idea that Cubby might say forget it and go with, say, Lewis Collins.

But as we know they did bring back Roger repeatedly that seems unlikely. For that to be the case it would have to mean that they were unhappy with Roger and only stuck with him because they couldn't find anyone better, and I don't think there's any suggestion of that because if you really need a new actor, you'll find one.
They are going to make a Bond 26 after all, or if they don't, it won't be because they can't find anyone to play Bond in it.

Yeah I don't doubt it did no harm for the negotiations for Roger's team to know they're always looking at other options, but regardless it seems clear Roger was always first choice.

The height is a problem, but Craig was only an inch taller. He can wear lifts. As for the age, he'd be pushing 30 or possibly past it by the time the movie is made.

I'm really looking forward to a young Bond, running around like Dalton in TLD or Craig in CR, at least for one film.

We know Moore, Brosnan, and Craig have all gotten injured playing Bond. What about the others?

Yes, undoubtedly, I'd say. After all, he was really popular worldwide and was synonymous with what Bond had become by the mid-'80s - other than the outside possibility of a straight substitute with, say, Ian Ogilvy as a Moore-alike Bond, Sir Rog. really was the only man for that type of film.

I think he’s an interesting candidate, but a bit too young at the current time, and I don’t mean in terms of age but just simply screen presence/ability to convey that sense of world weariness needed for Bond. Maybe next time though (isn’t he 26 or something? Even a 15 year gap won’t matter in that sense).

I suppose I've seen ATJ in something, but I don't know what. Whatever, he didn't make
enough of an impression to search him out. What film has he done that might persuade me he might be the next Bond?

I would rather have a more cerebral story the next time around without Bond being run ragged. Connery and Moore never had to run anywhere and..............still got the job done.
