Hell, we've had some large gaps in the latter half of the Craig era alone; it stands to reason that we'd obviously get a similar, if not bigger, gap before beginning the next era.

NTTD gap... well. It wasn't deliberate.

Apply whatever reasoning you'd prefer, but 3-6 year gaps between films in one era should make it obvious it'd be at least 3-6 years before the next era begins too.

    Why?

...unless you genuinely believed that despite such gaps and delays, they'd really steamroll through after NTTD and deliver a new era in a year or two? If that's the case, you only set yourself up for disappointment, because that was never going to happen, regardless of how Craig's tenure ended.

Is there going to be another pandemic?

Are you just being disingenuous? The pandemic resulted in one delay for one film. There were four years between QoS and SF, three between SF and SP, and several other years between SP and NTTD that had nothing to do with the pandemic.

In no reality were we getting a new actor in the role in just two years post-NTTD. I would've loved that, sure, but those aren't the times we're in anymore.

To be fair, there is reason to believe with a clean slate that things would pick up. Wasn't SPECTRE set back because they wanted Sam Mendes to return, and the same with Craig on Bond 25?

Regardless, I think there's a difference between taking a year off to let things simmer and recalibrate, and going for over 2 years and counting without even a hint of news. I don't think anyone expects Bond 26 to roar into life in no time, but it would be natural to expect some first credible signs of development starting up by this stage, at least based on past precedent.

That is fair, I just didn't think there were some who actually believed the next Bond was going to take over by 2023. I'd love some concrete news as much as anyone but it's apparent the days of one new installment every other year are long gone, as badly as I yearn for them.

@DEKE_RIVERS, because things happen. You keep honing in on the pandemic delay, as if there weren't several other delays, hiccups, and general reasons why we didn't get a Bond installment in 2010, or 2014, etc. etc.

If you want to believe we will return to getting installments in such rapid fire pace, then I envy you, and I'd love to be wrong and see those days return.

It’s celebrating yesterday’s Leap Day with, none other than, our favourite spy leaping, leaping and … leaping (with style and class, and a great Bond quip at the end)….

I'll happily endure another 6 year gap if it means we get the triumphant return in 2027 but I think if they go down the "bond begins" angle again, all grounded and moody, it will turn a lot of people off. Casino Royale was proving a point, which at the time was important, but things have moved on since then. It's a new world we live in now, and we need a man for the moment.

    Maybe Villeneuve is the director?

I do wonder how many of those will actually be completed. He's like Chad Stahelski of late, attaching himself to more than he's putting out. Either way, I'm excited to see what he does next.

If I had to choose, I'd rather have him do a Rama film. That novel has been waiting for a decent adaptation for fifty years! Villeneuve could return to his Arrival days with that. I'd love to see that happen.

I definitely believe that he’s the one they’re after. And just a couple weeks ago he started to clear the decks: he was attached to a TV series with one of his favorite actors, Jake Gyllenhaal, but wiped it off his slate.

This was just days after he and Broccoli were at some event (at the same table).

He met with EoN before Fukunaga came on board to shoot NTTD, and they tried to make his schedule work— but he was in deep on preproduction with Dune.

Since then he’s kept it no secrete that he’s a fan of Bond and he’d love to eventually shoot one…

I don’t know if they can do this before Villeneuve gets busy again, but, my guess is they’re trying to make it happen…

(But nothing is a guarantee, and we may read a couple years down the road that a Denis Villeneuve Bond film was close to happening. But I’m convinced this is the big fish they’re trying to catch).

I know very little about it but it sounds like one of those "impossible adaptations" that I really feel like he could nail.

And man, I wasn't as blown away as most audiences were with Arrival on release, but I introduced my girlfriend to it some months back and we were both floored over it. What a special film.

Arrival, Prisoners, Sicario, Dune (and Dune 2 is getting big-time buzz)… This guy could do a big-scope Bond but with that “human” and grounded touch.

He’s a very talented director with a strong vision.

It's funny, even ironic to me here in Quebec how Villeneuve is mostly known outside the province only for his later, more (generally) commercial English language films. It's a shame because a film like Polytechnique (or both Maelstrom and Incendies) is even stronger, more human to me than any of the above.

I'm neutral as to whether he (or Nolan for that matter) would be a good director for Bond. In both cases we're talking about auteurists, both of whom I'd guess might not be willing to sublimate their own interests for those of a long-established, big budget franchise spectacle.

Oh, I’m aware of Villeneuve’s earlier works @Feyador (I'm your neighbour in Toronto); I only chose the latter films because of the scope of these films and the budget he had (notice I didn’t include Spider, on the list above, since that was also more of a micro-budget).

But I’ve been an admirer of Villeneuve’s for a very long time.

I can't speak for his later films, which I've only seen once or not at all (Dune), but what helped make those earlier films so emotionally effective was his quite intimate theme of long term trauma and the psychological impact of violence upon the characters victimized by it.

That could be very interesting when applied to a Bond film, but we had a little of that with the Craig years and probably I'd guess aren't going back to it anytime soon. Not that Villeneuve would necessarily want to ....

Something tells me that Barbara Broccoli has a ton of say in who she's seated with...I mean, I'm sure nearly every director wants to talk Bond with her.

And she has a big inducement this time around, the opportunity for a director to be involved in the casting of Bond...

(I didn't know how much I needed at least to dream of Villeneuve. It's been a tough week.)

In Fleming, Canada was usually presented, if at all, as a place to disappear into. I think Bond ruminates at one point on resigning from the service and moving to Canda, making it sound like a kind of internal [empire] exile. He does get there, for the service, in FYEO, to Ottawa, before heading to Vermont. But it's not much ....

'The Light of Day,' directed by Villeneuve. I'd watch it!
