According to Variety, Villeneuve gave an update on Dune: Messiah, which is expected to conclude his Dune trilogy, during a South Korean press conference for Part Two. "The screenplay is almost finished but it is not finished. It will take a little time …There’s a dream of making a third movie … it would make absolute sense to me … I don’t know exactly when I will go back to Arrakis," the director shared, hinting that he "might make a detour before just to go away from the sun. For my mental sanity, I might do something in between…”
And thanks for sharing that @peter! I missed those comments.
Whatever it is, it’s clear that he is trying to clean up his slate, having dropped out of a long-gestating TV series with one of his favourite actors Jake Gyllenhaal.
I don’t know how this post was sent, 😂 unfinished, so to finish a thought it’s clear that Cleopatra, RwR, and Dune 3 are untouchable. When they shoot, and how his team schedules the next five years of his filmmaking life will be key, for this “secret project” (whether it’s Bond, or not).
I would very much like him to make RWR next. In fact, I hope the sequels get adapted too someday, no matter how different they are from the first novel. (Then again, I'm still waiting for Odyssey 3 and 4 to get the proper treatment.)
Would love to see the sourcing on this because I saw earlier someone also mention that the "Craig shakeup" to the formula was likely staying for the next guy. Just curious if there's actual conversations happening or if it's all just conjecture.
The podcast is on YouTube. Look up happy sad confused, Edgar Wright from a few months ago. The video has timestamps with the section they talk about Bond.
Yeah. It's looking that way.
I disagree. If Nolan or Villeneuve direct the next Bond, I'll have to think about whether I'll watch the movie at all.
But it wouldn't be surprising if Nolan or Villeneuve will direct Bond 26.
I don't think they will deviate from the course of the last era, which I mostly didn't enjoy.
Oh, absolutely. Will we finally have our femme fatale, dear @Denbigh? ;)
I really am making a theory:
We have *some* "facts":
We know that Villeneuve *did* speak with Broccoli before Fukunaga was attached to NTTD.
He stated his disappointment that they couldn't make his schedule work at that time (he was deep in preproduction on the first Dune).
He has since, and repeatedly, stated his admiration for Bond and being a fan since he was a kid.
He has stated, more than once, that he wants to direct a Bond film.
He was at Broccoli's table at an event, and;
It was just two days later that he backed out of his long gestating TV series with Gylanhaal.
He has said, for his own sanity, he'd love to do a project in between Dune 2 and 3 (and both Cleopatra and RwR don't sound like projects one just "slips in" between projects (both sound like epics)).
Now he's talking about another project that's secret, and needs to see the light of day quickly (so, whether this is Bond, or not, it sounds like he's saying that whatever this project is, if it's soon to go, he'd be able to place it in his schedule).
That's all I'm basing my theory on...
There are many other talented directors out there.
It’s Rendezvous with Rama , and Arthur C Clarke sci-fi novel that Villeneuve is attached to.
Edit: @Kojak007 , don’t fret yet. No one knows if this is the case.
Villeneuve is the big director who I know is one that, not only do EoN want, but they really did have a meeting with him for Craig’s last film, and it was scheduling that stopped this union from happening.
So knowing there’s a mutual understanding that both parties would like to see this happen, combined with some other published reports, I’ve designed a theory— nothing more.
I do get the sense that this is awfully suspicious, and the “secrecy” just smells of EoN’s desire to always hold things close to their chest.
I don’t have a dog in the fight and I’m not advocating for any one director (although I have a couple of strong opinions on who I wouldn’t want directing Bond), and I’m sure the right person for this film will be chosen.
Thanks, @peter. I generally like ACC, and the synopsis for this made me think DV could make his most Kubrickian entry so far. Very exciting!
Sylvia Hoeks would do nicely ;)
I’m starting to think that way if Purvis and Wade are back, lol. Bond resigning, M being a hypocrite needs to stop.
I can’t, for the life of me, be a fan of that duo. I know many of our complaints are not their fault, but I don’t particularly like their writing and creative methods, and I think a stronger talent and name would better arm wrestle any director’s creative illuminations, such as code name theories and other precarious and nefarious ideas.
As well as plenty of other uncredited script doctors (some to punch up dialogue or characterization, some for plot and themes, some for upping stakes in action sequences...)
That’s true. And even though I don’t blindly trust the duo, the scenario where they work with DV on a script is one I do trust. There are combinations that work, others that don’t. Flavours that only work with others. And DV is a strong enough flavour to make that combo work, IMO.
I couldn’t agree more.
Seconded. Seriously, these guys need dusting off. Time to bring in a fresh take. They know their stuff, but as has been proven on this forum, they're not the only ones out there. At least it can't hurt to bring in someone else for a change.
