Does anybody know the split between cinema take and dvd/blu take (gross and net)? It would be interesting to see which is more profitable and whether the gap has been closing or increasing. That may explain the faster releases these days.

Credible numbers are always hard to find, but my data shows the theatrical run is, across the board, still more revenue generating than home video.

Skyfall: $304M+ Cinema, $99M Home Video

Granted, these are US market only (as those are the only decent numbers I could readily put my hands on this morning) and we don't know the relative profit margin for the studio of one over the other. We do know that typically 40-60% of tickets sales go back to the studio (and exceptionally as much as 90%, as was the case with Phantom Menace). Given the hype I'd guess that Skyfall was able to command on the higher side of that. I doubt Home Video can boast any better margin which makes the disparity even greater.
but Mendes and co. couldn't afford to shave off two minutes of an action sequence to give us an actual explanation of just what happened with Quantum and what it's role was in relation to SPECTRE? Come on, now.

This hits the nail on the head. Mendes gives us 5 minutes of some poncey tracking shot of Bond walking through a crowd but can only spare 3 seconds showing us how the rings link all the other villains to SPECTRE which is crucial to the plot.

The guy seems to have his priorities all wrong. There's a similar thing in a behind the scenes video when he's jumping around wetting his pants that they've just filmed the biggest explosion in history - like that matters. How about you give us a memorable stunt to rival the ski jump or the bungee jump in your two films? TB had the biggest explosion ever recorded I think and possibly so did DAD and who gives a toss?

But people still remember Bond pulling the Union Jack ripcord or landing a 360 degree roll in a car 40 years on.

I fear Mendes is a bit of an emperors new clothes situation. Style trying to mask a lack of substance. Compared to Martin Campbell (who most people would c

I'm not sure, but these are also rather unique in that eventually, SP will start shipping without a slipcover, much like what happened to SF.

Maybe I should just wait to pick it up from the store then?

@jake24, I went to my local Wal-Mart at midnight for SF and they had them all set out and each one had a slipcover. I'm sure the ones with slipcovers will be around for a while, but eventually, once they start to really sell and more are produced and shipped off, they likely won't involve a slipcover. So, no rush, but don't take too much time in getting one with a slip if that's what you'd prefer to have.

Thanks, Creasy. I took my chances and preordered a copy from Best Buy online. I'll be happy just as long as the movie's in the box. Can't wait to blast this one up on my TV!

@jake24, neither can I! It's going to look fantastic.

@hthomas20, I thought about the Target exclusive, but I'm not going to double dip just for a bonus DVD. Steelbook for me.

It's just going to be whatever edition of the film Amazon is offering up. The cover art for all of them is atrocious, so I don't particularly care on that front which one I get, and I don't care one bit about the extras.

I might wind up getting a BD off eBay with no slipcase if I can get it faster that way. I just want the MOVIE! B-)

I'm just back from a quick vacation in NYC. My hotel already had SP on the 'on demand' service. It was being promoted a lot on their 'default' channel when I turned the tv on. It looked quite good on the small screen, but I decided not to order it, and will wait to enjoy it on my larger screen on blu.

@bondjames, weird, my friend just got home from a weekend vacation in NYC, as well. I'd love to be able to watch SP on my TV right now, January 22nd needs to hurry up and get here.

It was a great few days away @Creasy47. I booked this a few months back and was betting on a milder winter. Thankfully it played out that way, allowing me to get in a bike ride through Central Park along with the usual tourist locations. Yes, I can't wait for the SP release as well. The tv promotion has got me reasonably excited and it looked very good advertised on the smaller screen.

Cover update of Dutch standard release.

    9200000040832017_1.jpg

I think we go to share Bluray with Uk, France, Italy and Spain.

    007-spectre-da-febbraio-in-digitale-da-marzo-in-dvd-blu-ray.jpg
    Italian release.

Dutch steelbook (Media Markt only, 1 disc)

    Spectre-%28Steelbook%29-|-Blu-ray

No slipcover with standard release and also none of three releases include bonus dvd.
I am almoost sjure, Uk standard release will include slipcover. Like as i said before, Fox also did this with Night At The Museum 3.

Funny though, the French steelbook will have space for 2 discs: 1 BluRay and 1 DVD:

Note the different side strips. Apparently, the French have a habbit of turning the title of the film the other way around.

Still can't get over the lack of work that went into that steelbook detail. I can only hope the Blu-Fans steelbook is actually creative and nice to look at.

As I am a big fan of this teaser poster (IMO the best teaser since that one from "Casino Royale"), I am happy that we get the above steelbook design:

Same here. I liked it as a teaser poster but I think something more exciting would work better. The IMAX poster image, for example.

It's creative, I'll give them that, but at the end of the day, all it is is a bullet hole and the title of the film, all sitting atop a completely black background. Where's the creativity? Why make that cover a special steelbook version when it doesn't even seem worthy of being remotely collectible?

Well it is minimalist. But remember that The Beatles did an album cover which was just white with small lettering saying 'The Beatles'.

You say that as if I'm some die-hard 'Beatles' fan, when that couldn't be further from the truth. ;)

Perhaps it's not laziness, then, and maybe it's simply that I'm not a fan of minimalism, much like the 'Ant-Man' poster they did - comes across as lazy to me, a fleeting idea that sounded good but wasn't executed properly.

Good news for Bond fans (whose ongoing cries for more special features and more extensive BluRay releases didn't go unnoticed ;-)):

Only USA based web shop TARGET will be offering an exclusive BluRay 2-disc set that will include a bonus DVD with special features. The 40 min bonus DVD will feature the previously released short documentary "The Shadow Of S.P.E.C.T.R.E.", the "Music Video of 'Writing's On The Wall' by Sam Smith" as well as a new exclusive short documentary title titled "From Title Song to Title Sequence", with commentary by Sam Mendes, Daniel Kleinman and Sam Smith:

    50451110?wid=480&hei=480
    PRICE: €22,32 (≈ £17,01 / $24,31)

On top of that, it seems that AMAZON FRANCE and MEDIAMARKT GERMANY will be the only media shops that will be offering a 2-disc Steelbook set (all other steelbook releases (NOTE: Netherlands, USA, UK) so far seem to be 1-disc releases! But if I were you I would wait for final disc content specifics before buying!).

For AMAZON FRANCE, it says it will have a BluRay disc with the film and a DVD disc with the film. One of the special features on the main movie disc is an extensive look at the "SPECTRE" PTS or opening sequence (not a videoblog) and insight in how the big stunt from "SPECTRE" got mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records. As the French steelbook will have space for 2 discs, it is perhaps nice to use the space for the Target DVD bonus disc with special features or the German MediaMarkt BluRay bonus disc with special features:
    http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B017MZ15GI/ref=s9_simh_gw_p74_d4_i1?pf_rd_m=A1X6FK5RDHNB96&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=1GX6HKXHNRMCG359J53T&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=577191447&pf_rd_i=desktop
    71lVESMsQVL._SL1500_.jpg
    PRICE: €27,99 (≈ £21,34 / $30,48)

For MEDIAMARKT GERMANY, the steelbook release will be a 2-disc set too. But here the top bar of the steelbook mentions that the 2nd disc will be a BluRay disc with special features. It will feature the previously released short documentary "The Shadow Of S.P.E.C.T.R.E.", the "Music Video of 'Writing's On The Wall' by Sam Smith" as well as a new exclusive short documentary titled "From Title Song to Title Sequence", with commentary by Sam Mendes, Daniel Kleinman and Sam Smith::

    James-Bond---Spectre-%28Steel-Edition-Media-Markt-Exklusiv%29-%5BBlu-ray%5D
    PRICE: €19,90 (≈ £15,17 / $21,67)

And then there's still the upcoming Chinese BLUFANS steelbook release of "SPECTRE" (see one of my previous posts above). It will include an exclusive lenticular slip cover, an extensive production booklet, post cards from the film and a signed card mentioning it is one out of a limited edition of 500 copies. The 500 steelbooks will be released in China, but can also be bought by us via this link. I advise you to follow the instructions from these links carefully, as this steelbook won't be released via 'ordinary' web shops:
    http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=270646
    http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=246855
Prices of this very exclusive steelbook release will undoubtedly be much more expensive, as you have to buy it via a 'group buy' via the weblinks I just gave to you above.

In general, home entertainment (BluRay's and DVD's) is cheapest in Germany and The Netherlands. USA comes after that. But France and especially the UK are quite expensive. Not to mention the insane prices in general from AMAZON.

Oh boy, the age of technology truly does make communication between each other more effective and satisfying! How could I have ever doubted them.
