Smith, Logan adapt 'Just Kids' - Best-selling book to become screenplay

Patti Smith and John Logan are teaming on a screenplay adaptation of Smith's ''Just Kids'' memoir about her relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.
The collaboration was announced Monday for the project.

''Just Kids,'' published last year, was awarded the 2010 National Book Award for Non-fiction. Smith and Mapplethorpe met in New York City in 1967 and lived together for five years as they moved from poverty to artistic and financial success.

Smith gained notice in the 1970s for merging poetry and rock and for her album ''Horses.'' In 2005, the French Ministry of Culture awarded Smith the title of Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres; in 2007, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Logan won the 2010 Tony Award for his play ''Red,'' about painter Mark Rothko. His screen credits include ''Gladiator,'' ''The Aviator,'' ''Sweeney Todd,'' ''Rango,'' ''The Last Samurai'' and the upcoming ''Coriolanus'' and ''Hugo.''
