Rumour: 007 to return to the 1960's?

express.co.uk/entertainment/films/611241/007-return-heyday-era-1960s
Producers aim to reboot the £4billion film franchise by turning back the clock to its original time period following the departure of Daniel Craig. Last week he declared he would rather slash his wrists than be 007 again after Spectre, his fourth Bond film, is released later this month. Studio bosses have asked TV’s award-winning Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner to head a new team to oversee Bond’s return to his heyday 1960s.

An MGM executive said: “This won’t be a retro one-off. We’re taking him right back to his roots. We’ll go forwards by taking 007 back to the era in which we believe he fits most comfortably.”

I'm not for it. Bond should always reflect the current times.

I doubt it will happen. Too commercially risky. However, I welcome this current trend in the novels. As a separate observation this would mean Elba has no chance of becoming Bond.

I'm on the fence with it. It could work, but I'm afraid of it failing.

    It's just too risky.

This is exactly why it won't happen. Would be cool to see, sure, but I don't ever see it happening unless the current (or any sort of future formula) grows overly stale and people are clamoring for the days of old.

Agreed. I'd prefer sticking with modern times anyway. It would end up pulling me out of the movie.

I think I'd enjoy it to be honest. But I doubt it will happen. That newspaper story sounds totally made up anyway.

I would say, 'unnecessary'. Also, I don't believe it.

God preserve us all from such ideas (best left to the Bond continuation novels methinks); it's already been done...in the 1960s! 8-|

How would that work anyway? Are they thinking of remaking the films and/or novels of the 60's? Or would this be brand new material but set in the 60's? Are they going to bring back Blofeld, Goldfinger etc?

They're not thinking about anything, it'll inevitably be some trumped up rumor that gets debated a few times and ends there.

In my honest opinion, the only way I'd like to see this done is as a mini-series on TV. Not the film series.

I've always thought it would be pretty cool to do TV adaptations of Fleming's novels in their original period - alongside the main film series - with a different actor as Bond. It'll never happen but it would be pretty cool I think.

I think this would honestly seem like a desperate move. What do I know though? People might eat it up happily with a silver spoon. I think this will be filed in the garbage bin of rumors.

When the originals were made the idea was to look forwards to a new modernity which was fresh unknown and exciting - look at DN and YOLT.

If we put a new Bond of our age into a past I fear it will just smack of pastiche and not been taken seriously. My gut feeling says it's a bad idea. Leave the SC film era alone too.

For the story to be true -- specifically for Matthew Weiner to be asked to head "a new team" to make 1960s pieces of Bond films -- MGM would have to deal with the Wilson-Broccoli family.

The Express story doesn't even mention Barbara Broccoli or Michael G. Wilson. The ownership of the Bond franchise is split between MGM and the Broccoli-Wilson clan.

    1) Does anyone believe Weiner would work as an employee to Broccoli-Wilson?

    2) Does anyone believe MGM has bought out the Broccoli-Wilson family?

If the story is true, the Express has missed a far larger story. To be clear, the story only says Weiner was "asked." Still, for MGM to even ask him would *suggest* the studio wants to displace Wilson and Broccoli.

So, at this point, there are many reasons to be wary.

The only wiener Barbara Broccoli is interested in working with is attached to Daniel Craig.

I'd be down for a Bond period piece! Funny how we were just talking about this in the other board about 'Bond in 2040'. I'd agree with @KM16 about it being a TV series, separate from the movies

Wow - if this is true then Danny 'loadsa money' Craig will be out, out and out! Bond will have to be recast if they return the character to the 1960s.

I think it's worth trying. If it fails they can bring Bond back to the 21st century. It's worth the creative risk, I reckon. And with EON getting the rights to SPECTRE (and related characters) it might make sense to take Bond back to the 1960s.
  • But do you like your Bond with an earpiece really ? It's hard to be on your own these days, you keep on reporting...

Won't work. Cinematic Bond should stay current/contemporary. Enough drama now in the world for stories.

I would be open to the concept. It would be a bold move but could work.

I don't but they could just as easily write that out.
  • With a certain Aston Martin popping up lately and in the 90's, but in Goldfinger it was a brand new car, I think people do long for 60's Bond.
Granted the movies have always been contemporary, the 60's certainly had a style that screamed SPY GENRE.

30 seconds of thought into how they can combine a back to the 60s concept with the amazing global locations that we have come to expect and you realise it will never work (unless you get a load of close ups), a good Bond is hard enough to shoot now but going back in time would make it ten times harder, just a bonkers idea

Maybe. If it's done right but I don't see it working out. It would look like the new man from uncle movie

May as well have it all CGi'd up to get a Desmond Llewelyn Q Bernard Lee and a young Connery together. Call it something like Thunderball?

I have to respectable disagree with this. There may be many reasons why this concept might not be the best way to go but every year countless films are made that take place in a variety of time periods. Recently the X-men series has shown how successfully this can be done. Creating a different time period is the least of concerns.
