007 GTA/Just Cause2 Style...Would you?

As games get more and more cinematic in approach (endless cut scenes, structured yet poorly executed story lines) Is it time to literally be Bond and go out and about, making Bondlike decisions for oneself, the side missions included obviously for good measure and back story but essentially, it's your world, Bonds world.

Starting with the one and only 'have to play' mission at the start, the mission where you are recruited to the secret service from an intense Royal Naval command scenario. Then you start at Mi6 - your options for discovery are a map of the world leading you to sandbox levels in each of those countries you have at your fingertips. You can return to Mi6 at anytime through extraction options whilst roaming.

You could even have a good/bad divide like 'Infamous' where you could, depending on your actions, be very non-bond bordering on super villain and take that tac too. (NOT Rogue Agent style)

This may not be devastatingly new but it has not been done with Bond...So my questions are;

Do you see this working?
Where would you set it, what countries ?
Voice Talent preference?
Equipment choices? (eg. in Justcause2 you have an ever present 100m projectile grapple hook)
Vehicle choices?
Land, Sea, Air?
Do you directly link to the films or just start afresh?

So instead of having to follow a developers diktat of where you go as Bond, you now have Carte Blanche to do what the hell you want with him...

You could do a lot with this type of game, I just don't see it being done well enough - by Activision at least.

Taking inspiration from the Uncharted or Batman games may be better.

Having the next bond game be produced by Rockstar would be great. I have a lot of fun revisiting both GTA IV and JC2 and Red Dead Redemption proves to me they can adapt this format to suit different stories.
I would like to see the Bahamas rendered as well as "New York" was in GTA IV and give Bond a variety of vehicles to drive (although he shouldn't be helping himself in the same way as Nico Belic). I think this format could offer up a main story as well as fun side missions. They could even include a casino so Bond could play cards.
@Samuel1001 's suggestion of Uncharted or Batman (by this I assume you mean Arkham Asylum?) games as a model is also a good one, as long as there is an opportunity for driving included. When I played Arkham my only disappointment was not being able to drive the Batmobile.

    I'd be fine with this.

That is good idea, anything to get away from CODised games.

Rockstar North is actually making a game named 'Agent'. First revealed in 2009. Sadly there's not much information given after that event. Other than it's still in the making.

It could actually be like a game you described.

Yeah, that was said to be cancelled but looks as if it's back on. It's been worked on since 2007 so when it finally appears it better be good.

This is the first look at The Agency, as it was known then, from 2007: http://www.mi6-hq.com/sections/articles/gaming_the_agency_first_look.php3?t=&s=games&id=01625

MI6 has been following the game from since it's announcement due to it's heavy Bond influence.

The Agency was a different game by Sony. That got cancelled earlier this year.

I can't wait to hear more Agent news. I have been hyping it since 2009. I've always wanted Rockstar to take on espionage.

I'm kind of bugged how little we know about the game. From time to time I tend to google the game. I only get old articles from 2009 or some newer articles that say"it's still in the making" and the maybe Rockstar will show the game on E3. Didn't happen this year. Everyone else wants GTAV from Rockstar North. I want Agent! And I want to know a lot more about it. Other than... "we're still making the game"...

I want Agent to do espionage (in Rockstar kind of way of course) what Red Dead Redemption did to westerns.

Agreed @SharkBait, but Rockstar has a lot on their plate and take their time with games to give the best to the consumer. They have Max Payne 3, Agent, Grand Theft Auto 5, possibly Bully 2, and who knows what else being developed right now. Look at past efforts. Great writing, story, characters, audio/voice acting, great physics engine, and immersive worlds. I say take all the time they need, it'll at least be good in the long run. One should never rush creativity. Until more news comes, we'll have our hands full with other games anyway. LA Noire is great if you haven't played it, the Uncharted games, with the third coming soon, Batman Arkham Asylum and Batman Arkham City coming soon, True Crime Hong Kong got picked back up by Square Enix, Goldeneye Reloaded(hopefully it's more Bond than COD, but it is Activision), James Bond Blood Stone is great if you ignore the story, I'm not a fan but MW3, BF3, and Assassin's Creed Revelations will be good for fans of all those series. Just suggestions.

    Oh, sorry. My mistake.

I've just got confused and confused others in the process.

truth be told It would be difficult to have bond in an Arkham Asylum type setting... Unless....

I correct that Quantum is opening a new Island Hotel there are 4 buildings a Casino a Hotel a science type building and I can't think of the 4th building anyhoo as 007 you have to use charm weapons and stealth tactics to infiltrate the hotel discover what Quantum is planning and to stop it at all costs!

    could be a fun game.

^ That could work, Risico. The game could have 4 zones that as the player progresses through the game, another zone is unlocked, and in turn the area the player can explore grows in size.

    - Casino/Hotel
    - Island Forest
    - Beach
    - Industrial / Power Plant

yes but the casual bond gamer wouldn't be able to just shoot his way out he has to use more stealth and like Alpha protocol talk your way though the game.

I think it would be awesome if they made a Bond game in the same freeroam style as GTA or Just Cause 2. Can't really picture how well they would do it and make it feel like a Bond game, but if Rockstar was to take this game on it would do well.

If you set up the game similar to L.A. Noir, a game where your a detective and make literally all the decisions in solving the case, I think it'd be amazing.

You could pick the best course to enter a building, whether to attack now or wait, whether to capture and question or just kill a baddie.. and things like that. It'd be a ton of fun imho.
  • LA noire style or open world game would be awesome, and I would love to see some assasins creed style free running chases based on what we've seen in previous craig films.

Agreed about the assassins creed running thing. I said it before I'll say it again I'd like an Arkham asylum style bond game where there is an island and Bond is called in as an unofficial observer but the owner of the island is evil and either wants to kill of the world leaders or there is some danger that the general guests don't know about and 007 has to well be 007 to get at the bottom of the mystery that means being stealth being suave and being ready to do whatever it takes to stop the threat

    could be cool

that would be awesome. but as some of the comments above me say, none of these awesome ideas could be done by activision. Get rockstar to do it, they've proven good with open world games and they are by far the best current game developers.

Are you suggesting Naughty Dog make the game? Granted, they kicked ass with Uncharted, but I'm not sure how they'd do with a Bond-like game. Y'know, Eurocom has already proven they can copy Infinity Ward and Treyarch and make a CoD-ripoff with GoldenEye, why can't they rip off Rockstar? At least they know the Bond franchise.
  • I think a better way is to replicate something like they did in Jedi Academy - four or five missions that can be done in any order, then one BIG mission, and repeat with about 3-4 sets that builds to the climax.

That sounds fun, but maybe it wouldn't work for Bond. Of course, really, a sandbox game probably wouldn't work for Bond either, unless...

What if they did it Dead Rising style? You get main story missions and side missions and a time limit, and you try and juggle the two against the time limit. Plus, using almost anything as a weapon would be to Bond's style, since he's known for improvising (such as using the hook to down the helicopter during the bike chase in TND).

Rocksteady studios give it to them and that's it!

I think you meant to say Naughty Dog has the GOTY for 2011.
