Too much backstory & tying of knots drag both SF & SP down (although I have made it clear that I like SP in spite of this). Hopefully the next one will be more focused.
I'm sure in one of the leaked scripts the ring is some sort of computer drive. Think that angle would've been better IMO. Bond could've witnessed it being used as such, say at the Rome meeting, with perhaps the SPECTRE members voting for Sciarra's replacement by placing their hands down on a pad on the table.
But do you find the ring more distracting than Silva’s unbelievably contrived plan to be captured & access the mainframe, to then fly all the way to Scotland to have a shootout with the DB5 from GF..??
I honestly don’t see how some fans (and I'm not saying you are one of them, it's just an observation) can forgive SF it’s idiotic plot contrivances but then have issues with those in SP.
This quote should be at the top of every single webpage devoted to movies!
Of course. Which is why those here who adore SP for it's 'Bondness' and unashamed vitality should be cut some slack. Every one of the films needs it's advocates.
I've always found Silva's plan kinda 'loose,' but the other day I realised that where it all falls apart is how much he lucked out with Q. I'm not talking about how Q stuck an ethernet cable into Silva's laptop with wild abandon - I'm talking about how Q just so happened to access Silva's laptop a) while Silva was in the same building and b) it happened whilst M's inquiry was happening.
I mean, Q might have been too busy to look at the laptop for days, if not weeks, by which time Silva might be sitting in some prison many miles away!
Not at all, Silva's plan made not a jot of sense, which is why it took me out of the movie (particularly the placing of explosives to blow a hole so a tube train could fall on Bond). The ring on the other hand - no pun intended - is just a bit lazy on the writers part and didn't spoil my enjoyment of SP.
I also watched SF recently, just a few days before seeing SP in fact - so that I could compare them somewhat objectively.
SP had about the same amount of inane plot contrivances, but unlike it's follow up - and I kid you not - rewatching SF was a STRUGGLE. The Macau sequence is great, as is the final closure atop & in the new MI6 building. Other than that... dour.
I also rewatched SF before seeing SP and my experience was very similar. Macau is the last scene in the movie I really enjoy until we get to the '007 reporting for duty' end scenes with M. Bardem is a fantastic actor but I think he was indulged far too much. I also get really annoyed that the leak of the MI6 agents - you know, the whole reason for Bond's mission - is completely dropped when Silva is captured.
Please please please give us a top notch writing team for the next one.
The infuriating thing is - that's all the series needs to be top-notch again. The same crew but with a fresh team of writers.
Everyone seems to agree that the reboot & the starting anew was badly needed to revive a film franchise that had become a pastiche unto itself with DAD - yet nobody really seemed bothered that the same writing team had been kept on all these years...??
Logan looked done with it, way back when P+W were brought in. He as good as said it. It's not a Newman scenario with Logan, I don't believe. This is bolstered by the fact a lot of his work was binned off.
They trust P+W's knowledge of the cinematic/literary.
Fine - so as I have said before: keep them on as CONSULTANTS, which is essentially the pinnacle of their talents. Writers they are not, they are qualified to be advisers at the most.
I don't know you know, right after Skyfall Logan and Mendes got in to Penny Dreadful together before moving on to Spectre. And this is despite Logan's apparent failings with the Skyfall script which led to P&W being asked to "polish up" the script. I think Sam is very much a Logan fan boy. Credit to Logan beyond Bond he has down exceptional writing work with Gladiator, The Last Samurai and Any Given Sunday not forget writing the Martin Scorsese film Hugo. He is not right for Bond for me, but as I said I reckon Mendes is very much a Logan fan. IMDB interestingly have John Logan as announced as writer of Bond 25.
PS plenty of articles on line from last year with Logan talking about Bond 24 and 25 being written together. I said on another topic I suspected that next story is already written and that Spectre although not filmed back to back is a two part affair. That SPECTRE ended in a way which if it flopped or Dan and Sam decided to call it a day had an ending but at the same time left it open.

No one has mentioned it, but maybe the drill did work and everything after that was Bond in la la land. Everything after that point became too perfect and Bond quitting and walking off with a woman for quits.
I think Bond died.
