@00Beast, is there anything you enjoyed about SP?

When I left the theater on Friday night after seeing Spectre, all I could think about was how much I missed seeing SkyFall in the theater and the joy it brought me. Spectre was a massive letdown for me, whereas SkyFall got me going. I prefer basically everything SkyFall did over anything Spectre did. Silva was the better villain, Craig put out the better performance, the action and dialogue were superior, and the climax was far stronger. I struggled to be thrilled by Spectre; SkyFall, on the other hand, had me gripped from the beginning. I thought the emotional appeal in SkyFall was far more genuine and effective than what seemed to be attempted in Spectre, which made it feel very manufactured.

I respect Mendes for the what he tried to do with both movies. I just happen to feel he failed on both counts. But when it come down to it Spectre is the least disappointing, may be because it doesn't aim as high.

Either way I'm happy to see the back of Mendes.

I don't even know why I'm responding to this. Had it ever occurred to you that I had mistakenly posted my comment twice?

I get what he's saying. I tried hard as well. Eventually I had to just admit I wasn't enjoying the film at all.
Sorry you guys can't enjoy what many of us feel is the TB of Craig's tenure!

But you are forgetting that for many fans TB is the low point of the Connery era. I personally would rather watch DAF any day.

    Hmm...

I'll vote for Skyfall despite counting myself as a SP ferocious fan.

I personally find SF one of the most disappointing films in the series precisely becuase I actually really like so many of the ideas. I just think Mendes executes it really badly / crudely.

The final act should be a tribute to John Buchan and Hitchcock but as so many have said before, comes across as a low grade Home Alone. Just a missed opportunity IMO. Could have been great but fell well short.

SP is a much less ambitious movie but actually works much better on its own terms than SF.

I kinda agree with your last statment. The other one I marked in bold made me laugh quite a lot because... Yes, indeed, in a parodic sense the climax of SF really resembles a hardcore version of Home Alone! =))

I hate even thinking this, but after two viewings I think Spectre is the worst Bond film since DAD.

Skyfall is a top 10 Bond film for me.

My personal preference is Skyfall, which immediately became one of my all-time favorites when I first saw it. I like Spectre a lot too (both Top 10 Bond films for me), but SF is my choice.

Fine, each to their own. Except... that SF isn't actually a Bond film, though, is it.

In any case we're seeing the trend that those who loved SF generally dislike SP, and vice versa.

I respect Mendes for having tried to make two quite different films. Shame Thomas Newman didn't get the memo and just rehashed his SF score for SP.

I agree on Mendes - he should be given credit for taking this in a different direction this time, even though it is having a 'shock' effect (at least initially) on some.

I don't agree on Newman though. I think his score was perfect for this film and worked very well with what was up on screen. The pretitles work is one of the best pieces since the Barry era (top 2 or 3 for me). The film has far more essential problems than Newman's score imho.

The only issue was the recycling of the SF Moors track in the finale (which went on and on) and that it was played too darn loud.

I actually felt that with a better score and perhaps a shorter running time this could have really improved SP a lot. I am not a massive fan of David Arnold, but once again Newman managed to make Arnold look very good.

A simple question, but one which is hard to answer. Both have flaws. SF was big in terms of it's idea. SP was a proper Bond movie, with only fleeting grandiose. I love Bond's apathy in SF for the first half of the film. I love Craig's swagger and insouciance in SP. Tricky for me to separate them. Provisionally, both pictures are in the bottom reaches of my top ten.

Some comments pretty harsh here.Particularly the comment that its the worst since DAD! Ridiculous! I prefer SP, but I like SF, mainly because of Craig and Bardem. I profoundly disagree that SF had better action, after the pre-credits (which, frankly SP blows out of the water!) there is very little action in its 2 hr plus running time until the ending! Apart from the fight with Patrice (which looked too choreographed to me, compared to SP bruising brutal Hinx scrap) and the shootout at the enquiry, that was it.

SPECTRE, but only slightly. It took me two viewings to fully appreciate SF. Only seen SP once so far, but it blew me away.

SF has a better theme song, and better cinematography, though.

    1. SP
    2. SF

Very close though. Although I'll agree, very different films.

I love both :( It's just that SF came very much as a novelty, while SP is classic Bond at its best and worst, and I feel many people was too used to the "new formula". SP is the funniest Craig movie IMHO, and it's now the one I would recommend to newbies in the series.

I think I'm going to revise my own opinion and say that Specter was a touch better than Quantum of Solace.
