@chrisisall, 'Army of Darkness' was released in 1992. ;)

Damn, this is going to be tough, and I'm only 24.

    1991: 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day'
    1992: 'Reservoir Dogs'
1993: 'Tombstone' (narrowly beats 'Schindler's List,' just in terms of favorites.)
    1994: 'Forrest Gump'
1995: 'Goldeneye' (hard to pick this over 'Heat' and so many other great movies)
    1996: 'Jerry Maguire'
1997: 'Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (seriously.)
1998: 'Saving Private Ryan' ('Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' is so close!)
    1999: 'The Matrix'
    2000: 'Traffic'
2001: 'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring'
2002: 'The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers'
2003: 'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King'
    2004: 'Man On Fire'
2005: 'Munich' (Favorite movie of all time)
2006: 'Casino Royale' (excellent year for movies.)
    2007: 'American Gangster'
2008: 'The Dark Knight' (QoS nearly beats it!)
2009: 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' ('Public Enemies' and 'Antichrist' came close.)
2010: 'Exit Through The Gift Shop' (didn't think I'd pick it, hardly anything else good.)
2011: 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo'
    2012: 'Django Unchained'
2013: 'Prisoners' ('Gravity' and 'World War Z' come close.)
2014: 'Whiplash' (Top 10 movies of all time for me.)
2015: 'Mad Max: Fury Road' (Don't need to see anything else this year to know that.)

Yeah, that's how I listed it. My numbering might be confusing. I was lazy there.

@GoldenGun, you have a great taste in film. Anyone who loves both the LOTR trilogy and films like 'Headhunters' and 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' is a friend of mine.

I will at some point maybe make this list, but it does seem like a lot of work, being of the same vintage as @chrisisall.
However I can say with certainty that any year a Bond film was released, that film by default becomes my favourite movie of the year from DN to SP, so that takes care of 24 years there.
Planet of Apes years would be second trump and I am including all Apes films, both new and old.
Clint Eastwood westerns and Dirty Harry films would be 3rd trump

Terminator films would be 4th trump
From the Keaton Batman years onward the best comic book film of the year would be next trump.

BTW OP trumps NSNA in 1983.

This criteria might actually cover off all 5-plus decades pretty close.

Those two over Superman?? Animal House I might be able to see if comedy is your thing, but Deer Hunter is over-melodramatic nonsense IMO. Full Metal Jacket, or Platoon, or Casualties Of War, or even First Blood are all better choices for Vietnam era exploration/catharsis.
Sorry. I was just so offended by that flick.

Ok, this is still doable for my age group...

1981: Raiders of the lost ark - pure classic escapism
1982: Blade Runner - the most underrated film noir ever
1983: Scarface - there can be beauty in violence…
1984: Gremlins - one of the funniest films I have seen. ever
1985: Back to the Future - if this doesn’t make you feel good you are not human
1986: Aliens - “sci-fi action” as a genre has never been done this well, before or since
1987: TLD - see my constant championing of this on the forum…
1988: Who framed Roger Rabbit? - just so underrated
1989: Dead poet’s society - lessons in life by Robin Williams
1990: GoodFellas - one the best films ever made imho
1991: JFK - layered, unapologetically indulgent insight into American political history
1992: The Last of the Mohicans - best “period” action-drama ever made
    1993: Jurassic Park - spielberg’s best
1994: Quiz Show - watch it and you will understand
1995: Heat - best crime thriller I have seen
1996: The English Patient - such and elegant and moving film
1997: L.A. Confidential - best celluloid version of my favorite writer, James Ellroy
1998: Ronin - incredibly underrated thriller
1999: The Insider - utterly gripping and underrated
2000: Gladiator - overrated these days but still the best film of that year
2001: Black Hawk Down - Ridley Scott does this stuff with his eyes closed
2002: The Bourne Identity - breath of fresh air in the year that gave us DAD…
2003: Mystic River - no other Dennis Lehane book was done so well
2004: The assassination of Richard Nixon (’04: a DIRE year for good films if ever there was one…) - this film needs to be watched – incredibly underrated
2005: Batman Begins - how a comic origin film should be done
2006: Casino Royale - 3rd greatest Bond movie for me
2007: Into The Wild - just a wonder of a film
2008: The Dark Knight - Batman by Michael Mann, basically
2009: Moon - chilling stuff and one of the best sci-fi films I have seen
2010: Never let me go - heart wrenching morality tale of fate & the British class system
2011: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - surprise of the year
2012: Jagten (aka ‘The Hunt’) - incredible filmmaking, how do the Danes do this stuff so regularly..?
2013: Wolf of Wall Street - Scorsese was never this much fun
2014: A most violent year - Inspired by so many great filmmakers… underrated
    2015: Spectre - subject to change…

The threads throughout my movie life are spun by (in bold) the likes of Scorsese, Michael Mann and Ridley Scott, I guess... even a lot of the films that aren't theirs on here are heavily inspired by them.

really struggled with 1993. Tombstone just barely edges out Bridget Fonda as "Nikita" in Point of No Return
other are pretty much slam dunks. Faithful to Bond, Apes, Terminator, Narnia, Clint, Avengers, Supes, Godfather
But for a handful, I also own all of these movies.
Missing, Cat People, Aliens, The Dead Pool, Godfather Part 3, Tombstone, Interview With the Vampire, Mission Impossible, Lion Witch and Wardrobe, Voyage of Dawntreader, Dawn of Planet of Apes and SP, but will snap that up first day of release
