I'm leaving Bond out of this list although 007 always takes the top spot (and priority).

That makes this is more difficult than I thought.

In addition, since the start of the 21st century I'm really scraping the bottom of the barrel just to find anything remotely up my alley. Therefore I saw fewer movies these past two decades.

    1975- FAREWELL MY LOVELY
    1976- THE ENFORCER
    1977- SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER
1978- SUPERMAN (though CONVOY is a close second)
    1979- DRACULA
1980- BON VOYAGE CHARLIE BROWN (AND DON'T COME BACK)
1981- RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK
    1982- BLADE RUNNER
    1983- SUDDEN IMPACT
    1984- LASSITER
    1985- FRIGHT NIGHT
1986- STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME
    1987- THE UNTOUCHABLES
    1988- DIE HARD
1989- INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE
    1990- GOODFELLAS
    1991- THE ROCKETEER
1992- A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT
1993- IN THE LINE OF FIRE
    1994- ED WOOD
    1995- SE7EN
    1996-SLING BLADE
    1997- L.A. CONFIDENTIAL
    1998-THE BIG LEBOWSKI
    1999-THE GENERAL'S DAUGHTER
    2000-O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOUGH
    2001-THE TAILOR OF PANAMA
    2002-DEUCES WILD
    2003-MYSTIC RIVER
    2004-THE POLAR EXPRESS
    2005-KING KONG
    2006- HOLLYWOODLAND
    2007-HITMAN
    2008-GRAN TORINO
    2009-PUBLIC ENEMIES
    2010-SHUTTER ISLAND
    2011-MISSION IMPOSSIBLE GHOST PROTOCOL
    2012-LAWLESS
    2013-DALLAS BUYER'S CLUB
    2014-THE NOVEMBER MAN
    2015-BRIDGE OF SPIES
    2016-THE CONJURING 2
    2017-LOGAN LUCKY
    2018-BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
    2019-JUDY

Am struck by how difficult this gets from the early 1980s onwards. There’s a world of good films until 1984 or so and then things get harder.

    1967 You Only Live Twice
    1968 2001
    1969 OHMSS

1970 Colossus: the Forbin Project (this is a great film)
    1971 Diamonds are Forever
    1972 Deliverance
    1973 The Wicker Man
    1974 The Towering Inferno
1975 Monty Python and the Holy Grail
    1976 The Omen
1977 Star Wars (it will never be A New Hope to me)
1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers
1979 Alien (Apocalypse Now runs it close)

    1980 The Empire Strikes Back
    1981 Excalibur
1982 Blade Runner (The Thing runs it close)
    1983 Return of the Jedi
    1984 Dune (yes really)
    1985 Pale Rider
    1986 Aliens
    1987 Hellraiser
    1988 Die Hard
    1989 Do The Right Thing

    1990 Total Recall
1991 The Addams Family (scraping the barrel here)
    1992 Alien 3
    1994 Stargate
    1995 Showgirls
    1996 Independence Day
    1997 Event Horizon
    1998 Picnic at Hanging Rock
    1999 The Ninth Gate

    2000 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
    2001 Black Hawk Down
2002 The Two Towers (but massive competition from at least five other films, see below)
    2003 Return of the King
    2004 Dead Birds
    2005 The Descent
    2006 The Prestige
    2007 The Bourne Ultimatum
    2008 Quantum of Solace
    2009 District 9

    2010 Agora
2011 Once upon a time in Anatolia
2012 The Cabin in the Woods
2013 A Field in England (the only black and white film on the list)
    2014 Interstellar
    2015 Spectre
    2016 Rogue One
    2017 Blade Runner 2049
    2018 Annihilation

Haven’t seen a film in 2019 that I’ve really liked yet.

2002 was an astonishing year, I chose Two Towers but could easily have been Bourne Identity, or Ghost Ship, or Minority Report, or Resident Evil, or Gangs of New York

I’m struggling to understand this. You say things get really bad after 1984 or so and that you end up scraping the bottom of the barrel there. Yet you exclude any Bond films during that period. Surely Bond films should be the easy pick during those “bad” years. I mean you have Showgirls for 1995 but not GoldenEye?????? Not a single Roger Moore or Timothy Dalton film??? I don’t get it...

I didn’t say things get really bad after 1984, I said things get harder. There were very good Bond films but they are edged out (for me) in those particular years by other films.

Ah, my mistake. So you mean it gets harder to pick just one because of so many good films?

This might be rough for the more recent years as I haven’t seen a lot of newer films. Lemme try:

    1979: Alien
    1980: The Empire Strikes Back
1981: Raiders of the Lost Ark
1982: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (also my #1 favorite film of all time)
1983: Return of the Jedi (ouch, rough year)
1984: The Karate Kid (you’re gonna see a lot of childhood nostalgia picks for the ‘80s)
    1985: The Breakfast Club
    1986: Stand By Me
    1987: Empire of the Sun
    1988: My Neighbor Totoro
1989: Field of Dreams (largely responsible for making me fall in love with baseball at 11)
    1990: Goodfellas
    1991: Terminator 2: Judgement Day
    1992: Scent of a Woman
    1993: Dazed and Confused
1994: The Shawshank Redemption (barely, Ed Wood almost made it)
1995: Heat (was to be The Usual Suspects but Singer and Spacey being creeps brought it down)
    1996: Swingers
1997: Jackie Brown / Princess Mononoke (a tie between these two wonderful films)
    1998: Saving Private Ryan
    1999: (I have no idea)
2000: In The Mood For Love (one of the most beautifully moving films ever made, please watch)
2001: Spirited Away (my favorite animated film ever)
2002: Catch Me If You Can
2003: Lost In Translation (my favorite film of the 21st century thus far)
2004: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
2005: wow, even rougher year than ‘83. Um... Batman Begins, I guess?
2006: Letters From Iwo Jima (sorry, Casino Royale, but not quite)
2007: No Country For Old Men
2008: Revolutionary Road (ooh, so close for The Dark Knight, but nope)
2009: 500 Days of Summer (but the first ten minutes of Up is way better)
2010: Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (might change if I finally see Inception or Black Swan)
2011: The Artist (I really need to see Drive)
    2012: Silver Linings Playbook
    2013: Her
    2014: Boyhood
    2015: The Martian
    2016: La La Land
2017: Blade Runner 2049 (Wonder Woman a close second)
2018: A Star is Born (I way prefer the 1954 Judy Garland classic but this was quite good too)
    2019: The Irishman
    2020: (nothing due to pandemic)
2021: (nada due to the same)

I will put something for 1999 after I see something worthy, like perhaps Fight Club (yep, still haven’t seen it). Ditto for this year and last.

Something like this. I realised how much I’ve lost interest in movies sometime in the 2010’s and til today. There’s lot of great tv shows but not so many movies that I’ve cared for since. And the 90’s were really amazing.

    1988 Die Hard
1989 Back to the Future Part II
    1990 Goodfellas
    1991 Terminator 2: Judgement Day
    1992 Reservoir Dogs
    1993 Schindlers List
    1994 Pulp Fiction
    1995 Seven
    1996 Jerry Maguire
    1997 Titanic
    1998 Saving Private Ryan
    1999 The Blair Witch Project
    2000 Almost Famous
    2001 Oceans Eleven
    2002 The Ring
    2003 Kill Bill Vol.1
    2004 Downfall
    2005 Batman Begins
    2006 The Departed
    2007 Grindhouse
    2008 The Dark Knight
    2009 Inglorious Basterds
    2010 Black Swan
    2011 Intouchables
    2012 Django Unchained
2013 The Wolf of Wall Street
    2014 Interstellar
    2015 The Hateful Eight
    2016 La La Land
    2017 Dunkirk
    2018 Avengers: Infinity War
2019 Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
    2020 Tenet
    2021 No Time To Die
2022 Avatar: The Way of Water
